Is this the same Scion im chassis that's like 10 years old? Or is the chassis new?

Spectre_Cdn 03-31-2022 12:32 PM

… this is the TNGA Corolla platform circa 2018 FailFish

Interior dimensions are likely the same or less than the current hatchback if it has more bolstered seating.

I am soooooo tempted to put a deposit down, but even though I'm a diehard Toyota guy and trust them quite a bit I hate the idea of buying a first year model of any car. It is encouraging that this engine has some history in the Yaris and the car itself of course does... any idea where it will be built/assembled?

I also know as a Toyota enthusiast they have a particularly annoying habit of adding very desirable colours/options/facelifts to vehicles 2-3 years after launch and sometimes even more power (see: Supra).

This thing going to be expensive AF

Be interested in the comparison for interior dimensions. While this light rocket might eat the Golf R for a snack ... there is the day to day reality. I mean how often you going to Mission raceway to go head to head with Golf R for 0-60 times? There isn't even any pics of 2nd row passenger seating, from pics of exterior, I can only guess that it will be quite cramped. Shape of rear hatch area (angled on Corolla vs. straight back for Golf R) would hint that trunk (or boot for you Brits) space is noticeably smaller.

A Golf is still gonna eat it for lunch doing digs. Every damn golf on the street has a 400hp tune and a DSG. No one shifting faster than those DSG farts.

The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla will be hand-assembled at the GR Toyota plant in Motomachi, Japan, the birthplace of the Lexus LFA, Supra A80 and GR Yaris. The GR Corolla will be sold in two versions: Core and Circuit Edition. The Core livery will be offered in white, black and Supersonic Red. As for the Toyota GR Corolla Circuit Edition, it is a limited edition version that will only be offered in 2023. It notably adds a carbon roof, additional air intakes on the hood and a spoiler more imposing at the back.
If this is correct then I'll most likely be trying to get a white 2024 model year Core Edition.

68style 03-31-2022 02:03 PM

You need to do a GT4 / GR Four photoshoot

underscore 03-31-2022 02:14 PM

A friend of mine has a white Alltrac too, I'd have to get those two together as well.

Teriyaki 03-31-2022 02:21 PM

The official launch of the GR Brand in NA. Goood stuff.

Just had this thought pop into my head...
Anyone else looking forward to the inevitable goofs that are going to start sticking "GR" emblems on the back of their clapped out Gen9 Corolla's?

StylinRed 03-31-2022 02:27 PM

Looks cool

Just look at reviews for the current Corolla hatch and you'll get a pretty good idea, these are effectively the same car with a hotter drivertrain and probably losing the spare tire well.

Officially the Supra is the first GR model in NA…

So far I think it all looks great except for the ‘flare’ extension on the rear doors. Looks like it’s stuck on with double sided tape, I guess Toyota wasn’t willing to make new tooling for a door skin

It’s funny you mention this because Honda didn’t bother with the flare at all for the CTR and there was an aftermarket stick-on just to make the fender look congruent.

Edit: $645 USD for a Varis trim piece

Purely from a daily driving POV, the new electronic parking brakes are quite good - like in the new Mazdas it will automatically disengage it when you get in gear, and automatically engage when you turn the car off. But there are the earlier ones that are half ass and quite annoying to use. Hopefully it is the former if it is in fact electronic

Based on the interior photo, I think this car uses a manual handbrake.

The grey Circuit one is :drool

radeonboy 03-31-2022 05:51 PM

The core model looks quite pedestrian compared to the Circuit model, which I'm going to guess will be pretty impossible to get in the lower mainland.

Small visual changes, really it's just the raised hood and spoiler out back that sets it apart. You can't really see the roof in most cases.

Getting the Core and then a spoiler will get you similar affects if you get the red or white version. The Heavy Metal (colour) is Circuit exclusive while black is Core exclusive.

68style 03-31-2022 05:56 PM

I’m far from a boy racer but man I don’t know how you say no to the circuit edition based on looks alone

Bender Unit 03-31-2022 05:59 PM

Core edition is missing a WRC style spoiler
Easy fix from Aftermarket

If it's 60+ before adm then i can think of a few reasons to say no :(

AzNightmare 03-31-2022 06:12 PM

3249 curbweight. I'm not sure if that's the Core or the Circuit weight.

The FK8 straight edge on the rear fender is supposedly functional - bringing the air from the back of the front wheels, past the side skirts, up that straight edge, and onto the wang. Don't know how effective it is but that's how they explained sold it.
