Kind of crazy for Sainz to get a penalty for a lap that didn't officially count...

Anyways this guy is pretty funny:

Felipe Massa considers legal avenue to dispute 2008 WDC results based upon Bernies recent interview where he revealed they knew they should have cancelled the 2008 Singapore GP results, which would have then given Massa the championship, but they wanted to avoid a scandal and give the championship to Hamilton so they didnt do anything

Massa to look into legal options over 2008 F1 title outcome
Felipe Massa has revealed that he plans to evaluate whether there are any legal routes that could help him challenge the outcome of the 2008 Formula 1 world championship that he lost to Lewis Hamilton.

>In an interview with the F1-Insider website last month, Ecclestone said he and then FIA president Max Mosley knew of the situation “during the 2008 season.”

>He added: “We decided not to do anything for now. We wanted to protect the sport and save it from a huge scandal. That's why I used angelic tongues to persuade my former driver Nelson Piquet to keep calm for the time being.

> “Back then, there was a rule that a world championship classification after the FIA awards ceremony at the end of the year was untouchable. So Hamilton was presented with the trophy and everything was fine.

>“We had enough information in time to investigate the matter. According to the statutes, we should have cancelled the race in Singapore under these conditions.

>“That means it would never have happened for the championship standings. And then Felipe Massa would have become world champion and not Lewis Hamilton.”

This is probably fallout from the Bernie documentary (Lucky!). I haven't watched it yet. I hear that Bernie makes a few revelations. I also hear he's pretty salty about the current value of F1.

Manish Pandey is the director. You know him because he made the Senna movie.

He's also a regular contributor on Chris Harris' podcast. They did talk about this a few weeks ago, but I don't know exactly which episode.

Salty about the current value of F1? That's rich.

The sport was on a huge decline at the end of his tenure.

Since Liberty took over it has grown massively in popularity, fanbase and viewship.

yes - that's what makes it so funny

To be fair - I don't think anybody could have predicted the Netflix effect.

Great68 04-04-2023 02:33 PM

I think it's more than just Netflix. Liberty understood how to market to younger people. Social media, drivers developing a "brand" for themselves (they get to choose and keep a consistent number) etc.

Things like F1 highlights on youtube were freaking banned under Bernie.

roastpuff 04-04-2023 02:34 PM

Bernie wanted F1 to be for rich people only, and have minimal online presence. He was not growing the value of F1.

It's a joke that he wants to sue now. Fuck Bernie, he doesn't deserve any of it.

It's more than Netflix, but Netflix is like 80% of it... It also kind of became a meme during peak meme era with kids, and then they just really got into it. It's a weird phenomenon that will be studied later. It made them a fucking LOT of money.

I’ve been an F1 fan for 15+ years or so. Even more if you count watching with my mom because she was a hugeee Villeneuve fan and racing fan in general long before I cared

I’ve been back on board in the last 4-5 years because the quality of racing has improved so much. There was a period of 8-10 years where the racing was a joke

mikemhg 04-05-2023 05:22 PM

Netflix is a portion of it, but don't underestimate what they've been doing not only on Youtube (their highlight videos consistently hit 1M+ viewers), but also the social media presence both on Instagram, Twitter, etc.

It's a holistic approach they've done on promoting the brand, not just Netflix.

Their YouTube content is spot on

Whether it be F2/F3 highlights or just the concise qualifying/practice highlights whoever puts those together does a great job, max 10 minutes of all the content you want to see with no filler

no probs w f1tv - just fire it up when i surface on sunday.

don't forget this is a sprint race weekend! love it or hate it, there's racing on saturday also

SkinnyPupp 04-27-2023 11:55 PM

Just remember this is a spoiler thread, so don't come in here if you don't want to be spoiled! If something crazy happens I might be posting it!

bcuzracecarz 04-28-2023 08:24 AM

This new sprint weekend setup is so busy lol dilutes qualifying so much I’m not a huge fan

sonick 04-28-2023 08:43 AM

Kinda agree about the sprint, but also fun to have three days of racing for stakes (quali Friday, sprint Saturday, race Sunday), vs Practice Friday, Quali Saturday, Race Sunday.

I read an idea on twitter if the quali should set reverse grid for the Sprint but standard grid for the race. That would be interesting lol. But risky for damage in the sprint to impact the race.

Great showing for Yuki dragging that boat up to Q3.

Disappointing pace from Mercedes, especially after all the hype the last week or two about their upgrades.

Hondaracer 04-28-2023 10:25 AM

I like the sprint. Feel like teams and drivers who wouldn’t usually be competing in regular qualifying take unnecessary risks in order to try and land a better race day position lol

sonick 04-28-2023 10:28 AM

^ sprint this year does not impact race day position anymore.

Hondaracer 04-28-2023 10:41 AM

Ohhh that’s what they meant there.

I saw that on their Instagram but the wording was so poor I was like wtf lol

Gerbs 04-28-2023 12:31 PM

Anyone going montreal grand prix? Accommodation pricing is crippling!

Hondaracer 04-28-2023 12:33 PM

Oh yea so my uncle on my moms side who I don’t really know is going to the Vegas GP

Fucking 8k for 4 nights at a hotel off the strip.. BEFORE tickets

sonick 04-28-2023 12:36 PM

I heard at some point airbnbs in Vegas were much cheaper than hotels coz property owners weren't in the loop with the F1.
