we learned a trick to always give right when you see them and then ask for xo sauce etc... this way you get service through out.

But TBH it's just a fun tradition. The amount of money you give out and what you/your kids receive roughly cancel each other out.

My last year payout between everyone was about 42k USD+6k CAD.
What we received was 45k USD+kids received about 3.5k between the 2, so really... the net is about 0.

Because the people you give red pocket to usually would check the amount you give (if you are the first) and make sure they are not coming up short.

So, in the end... it's always money out and back in. My bank has always asked me why I take out a large chunk of cash and deposit roughly the same amount a few weeks later. And I just say Chinese New Year tradition.

Gotta say... Badhobz is balling... those red pockets don't come cheap. I use some printable ones I got on Taobao 500 packs for 20 bucks.

I married into the Greek world. There is always money being passed around. I don’t get it. Generally you do end up at $0 in the end, it just seems so ridiculous lol. New car? Let’s hide some money in it. New baby? Money in the diaper? Wedding? Let’s cash out our savings to put on a party, then receiving a a large wad back in present….

The red pocket in CNY is called 壓歲錢, translate literally to money to squeeze age. Prevents kids from becoming sick and whatnot.

The headache is only having to call bank once a year to make sure to have brand new bills every time. In Taiwan it's a tradition so you don't need to ask. They'd have all brand new bills by then.

Here in Canada/US, you need to book about a month in advance as we need specific denominations. And worse with Canada because we don't have 1 dollar bills and it always has to end in 8. And the new plastic bills are freaking sticky brand new.

I can see how back and forth gift giving is similar, if it was gift cards or cash... but if it's something you choose or make to give to someone it has real meaning or something they might treasure. That's not true of cash.

If it's with so many USA people you gotta get it to them all don't you? Not sure how that's done, shipping cash in the mail? If it's a wire transfer does it still count as lucky?

I dunno if it's a Taiwanese thing. But I've seen people in my circle doing the same thing to their parents and they are Chinese.

I think the tradition of giving money to parents was a way to give them money to cover daily expenses as this thing kinda starts after they go into retirement. So, it's not 壓歲錢 per se. But just eventually merged into one.

How is a series of cash transactions totalling nearly $50k not balling? I don't even know how you fit $8888 in an envelope/pocket...

Just to put things in perspective, I give relatives on my side of the family $50 (2x$25) and my wife's side $10 (2x$5) - and it's discussed in advance so we receive equal in return. My parents will give us and their grandkids $100 each though.
