On the topic of this: incase anyone is buying a used car:

Sold my saturn 9 months ago, the lady went by market value which was less than actual sold price

Then a few weeks ago we sold another car through her, and the sold price was higher than market value, buyer had to pay tax on higher value. I grilled her on it, and she said its higher of the two as per new tax rules

In other words, still "buy" your cars for less than market value for paper reasons

If it's older than 2000 just say $100 because they have no listings for it.

If it's newer than that, look up the Black Book value.. that's what they use. I used the average value from there for the guy who bought my black Celica, saved him a lot of $$$ do your part to give the middle finger to an unjust tax.

This isn't true if the black book value is lower.

Sold my father's car for $6,500 and the black book value was $3,500. They charged tax on the $6,500. Which is not fair.

Because when I bought my car for under market value, they charged me based on book value and it was higher.

Total bs.

^ You can get an evaluation and fight it if you get charged more than you actually paid, but it's a pain in the ass

has anyone tried a service like this?

https://www.autozen.com/

I can't remember who told me about it but they said it worked out well. You can decline if you don't like the offers and walk away scot free.

I've done one transaction with them, and it went as expected.

One of their reps will come out to take a look at the car, takes photos, and post it on their platform

Then they'll call back to see if you're interested in the offers.

My car ended up being sold and shipped to Calgary, got paid instantly by e-transfer.
