I had almost brand new Farroad tires on when I handed the Q5 over to ICBC. It's not even worth the effort for mount + balance twice just to give them to you guys because they're cheap to begin with.

Not sure which set of wheels SSM wants, but I'm somewhat interested in Evo's summer wheels if they become available.
I think he's right on the winters. It's OEM sized Bridgestone DM-V2 and some knock off 20" 741M LA wheels

We'll see what ICBC asks for. The 741M wheels are in the garage, almost new Pirellis with around 8-10k km on them. 3 of them have curb damage though

I should grab that when if they total the car. No guarantees the next X5 would have a trunk mat.

Was it towed to the icbc yard? Isn't the cars automatically theirs if you do that, so you can't take big things off. And you can't really negotiate since the car is already in their hands

It's not the plastic. It's the EPS (or similar) foam used for crash certification. The foam's only intended for one hit, and it's a liability to presume it's "still good". Same reason you're (supposed to) replace your motorcycle helmet after a drop to the ground.

That doesn’t explain the 5 years with no hits tho…

It’s a ridiculous belief system no matter how you slice it, propagated very happily by car seat manufacturers.

Doesn’t these huuumons outgrow the car seat within a few years anyways ? I thought you’re pretty much on a cycle to perpetually buy car seats until…… what age do they not need one ?

I think when it's the parents choice to not strap the kid in (or at least no sets existed) then the blame is on the parents or it's written off as "that's life" whereas if the kid dies because your car seat failed then they blame the manufacturer.

There's probably few things worse for a company than being known as being baby killers (that's worse than killing puppies I think) and combined with how parents exercise so much caution with their children now I think it's understandable that car seat makers won't take any risks with this stuff (and probably take advantage of the situation to some extent).

Most seats are 8 -10 years. The seat lasts 1 kid for sure, and most families with 2 kids with a reasonable gap in between.

Our Clek is rated for 9 years.

It's longer than that, but it's similarly because of material degradation. It's the reason you're (supposed to) replace a motorcycle helmet every 5 years. Helmet life is likely rated to this shorter duration because of the heavy sweat exposure.

I don't disagree with the general idea that the industry around kid gear is totally preying on parents (i.e. organic muslin cotton and $1000+ strollers): with that, you're right. But this isn't one of those cases: with car seats and helmets, we're not talking "belief systems", we're talking real engineering limitations vs empirical crash test data.

I think you mean well, and I don't mean to be antagonistic. I just worry we have new parents on here who might read your confidently dismissive commentary and wind up forgoing their own research. That could be pretty consequential.

Tire size is close enough 265/45/20. If they want your originals, let me swap the tires first

My originals are 21" so I'll get the whole set of wheel and tire back.

A lot of seats are convertible nowadays, can go from rear facing to front facing so will last until they are big enough for a booster seat.

ICBC got back to us, it's a write off so I'm guessing we won't see an estimate. Now we are waiting to see 1) what they offer, 2) if I need to haul the 21" wheels down

Don't they give you a number right away? How much longer do you have to wait? Do you get some courtesy car since the car is at the lot?

Different department to give you the valuation, so you just wait for that phone call.
You have a couple days to return the courtesy car after they tell you it's total loss. They don't have estimated times for the process. You just sit and wait.
