Piss poor planning to schedule the game right before closing ceremony, hence the need to end the game as quickly as possible via 3-on-3. Like, you KNOW, that it's the most anticipated/hyped game/sport to watch, give the fans what they want.
It certainly doesn't help that the US being in the gold medal game (and then winning) probably drew millions more viewers and, based on ratings, may reinforce the idea that the format was a "good thing" for future Olympics.
In any case, Hellebuyck was just an absolute wall and could have still stolen it for them if it was 5-on-5 OT. But at least the game would have been so much more satisfying to watch even if Canada lost that way.
Edit: I retract my comment above after learning of Kash Patel’s visit/comments in the locker room.

Not a fan of 3on3, but everyone agreed to do it.
USA and Canada had to win OT games as part of their path to the final game.
3on3 is a very big game of possesion and Canada had arguably the three best players in the world on the ice at the same time.
Makar went for that 50/50 recognising McDavid was still deep after his coast to coast rush. If Makar believes he could win that 50/50 to poke it back to McDavid, then so be it.
Sadly, you cant expect your best offensive guns to make the smartest defensive plays on that back check.
Makar stopped skating in the neutral zone. He could have recovered regardless what happened in the offensive zone and picked up Jack Hughes on the backcheck, but he probably expected MacKinnon to win that battle for possession.

IIRC correctly Mckinnon had a choice to either go after the puck or play the player and I believe Makar and McDavid expected him to play the puck in which case they might have expected to see the puck go up ice quickly. McKinnon had a split second to make his decision and opted to play the body instead and that did not go well at all.
TBH, I was surprised to see this trio out at the same time - I figured it'd be McDavid w/Celebrini plus any D man and then McKinnon+Makar and maybe Marner.

Defenceman Tyler Myers will not play on Wednesday night against the Winnipeg Jets for roster management purposes, the Canucks announced ahead of puck drop.
The 36-year-old has been with the Canucks since the 2019-20 season after signing a five-year free-agent contract with the team. He re-upped with the Canucks in 2024, signing a three-year, $9 million extension, of which he is in the second year.
The contract carries a no-movement clause through all three years, which Myers must agree to waive in order to be traded.
