My house got robbed twice in back in 1995. I haven’t been robbed since then. Canada must be worlds better than 1995 now. Shit happens to you, then it doesn’t, then it does.
Canada is a relatively safe country, and the data lines up with that.
When speaking about public safety Canada is 14th in the world according to the global peace index, tied with Denmark. You can refute that data if you want, but someone who is much better than you or I at creating the formula did that, so you’ll have to bring it up with them and probably quickly do a PHD in data sciences.
China is 98th
USA is 128th
Russia is dead last.

Couldn't you live along Canada Line / SkyTrain ... and even keep the car?
Would moving to an apartment cut down on the property crime... especially if there's a concierge?

I'm not sure how it's changed since 2020-2022 but back then, I never had my S2k, Charger, etc get broken into despite parking by the SRO at Granville x Davie or Hastings x Gore 3 days a week for 12 hours.

When my place was broken into in 2014, crackhead left my tenant's camera and laptop. What he did take was her passport and costume jewelry.

ID theft, and stuff without serial numbers. I would have thought he'd take the camera and laptop.

Cops caught the guy 15 mins after we called 911, as wife was coming home and dashcam footage caught the guy walking out of our driveway. For home break ins, if you come home hours after you've been robbed, there's no trail for the cops to follow. In our case, it was so recent, a patrol car caught the guy 3 blocks over, even before the dog tracked the trail down.

Guy had a couple of LV purses from someone else's house too.

Because we had video footage of him walking off our property, it was a slam dunk for the charges. He ended up trying to fight the charges till the day of trail when I assume his public defender told him to take a deal. And contrary to those who think he was just let back out after the cops arrested him, he was remanded in custody till the trial date due to his record.

It's funny how I was just talking to a friend in Hong Kong about safety and crime in Vancouver last night. He used to live/study/work here, and he was spooked by the recent stabbing incident outside the Metropolis Apple Store:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DPRoRiEiRxJ/

Official VPD report says violent crime is at a 20-year all time low. Toronto and several GTA cities are also claiming crime rates have gone down significantly as well:

IMO COVID really sent crime rates into a massive tail spin as people lost jobs, homeless numbers went up, city revenues and services were reduced, and our cities in general look significantly worse. As we gradually move away from that COVID malaise era, the serious problems are improving.

That said, the perception of public safety does not seem to have measurably improved. We continue to be plagued by serious homelessness / drug addiction / mental health / encampment issues, and these definitely give us a pretty negative impression of public safety. The random mental health unprovoked attacks are obviously not helping either.

Now add the brazen and recurring jewlery store robberies (esp in Toronto), as well as the Indian gang wars / cocersion, they all just make people on edge and feel unsafe.

I also agree with 68style's assessment here:

in that the much wider exposure to news and social media is skewing our perception of reality. News reporting -- be they mainstream or social media -- are just so prevalent and easily accessible now, and we are being presented with live feeds or videos of the incidents as they happen, and there are follow up stories to them as well. Our preceptions are just hit differently when we see it in real-time visual form (ie. video) versus back then when we only read about it in the news. The visual presentation really magnifies the impact these news create on us. (Whereas we probably wouldn't feel much if we just read about it in printed form as words, or listened to it in audio form through the radio.

I think hard thing is.. property crime and violence associated it will go up.

For the first time in 2-3 decades we don’t have shit driving the economy.
Oil prices, housing market, education ‘market’ all fucked.

Sure some ppl might bring money from the US but I think day to day, the fed gov and the politics u see online don’t really affect life.

This Canada is unsafe commentary is making me chuckle.

What, Chilliwack is considered the most "dangerous" city in Canada, I wouldn't for a second be afraid of walking around anywhere in that city at nighttime. Many parts within the US would be a completely different story.

Not painting Bic with this brush, but I find very often the people who are spouting off the most about Canada being dangerous are the same people saying
A) they should be able to have a gun (like they are gonna be able to shoot straight when they are afraid of chilliwack DT)
B) talk about how anyone who isn’t constantly crying about various right wing complaints is a “cuck” or “beta”

I just can’t figure out if I’m supposed to be scared of all the dangerous immigrants and gays or scared of being beat up by the manly men who are afraid of immigrants and gays.
Plz help.

i also got robbed (house i mean) in richmond twice.

they honestly had a lot of time both times.

they took all my watches at both houses.
THey took some crappy fake jewelry. We didn't have any laptops, didn't have tablets but they did take few hundred bucks and left the passports.

Yeah the shittiest thing for us is they took my mom’s ring which was given to her by my great grandma. Not worth a ton but irreplaceable. A lot of my hockey cards were stolen as well as my PS1 and games. The second time it happened the guy was still in the house when me and my mom got home so she booked me out of there and had to wait it out at the neighbour for cops to come.
Don’t worry though they only took about 2 hours to get there though. Super helpful. At least I didn’t have a dog for them to shoot.

Back in the 90's my house was broken into. Very likely by my sister's shit friends. They stole our VCR and my NES. Jokes on them though, I got the SNES afterwards. HA!

The same thing happened to us when I was a kid, they were clearly there as we were coming in the garage because they missed things like the Playstation and didn't take anything from my room but broke open my brothers piggy bank. The shitty part was they dumped out my moms jewelry and I guess grabbed a handful when they ran because they left some single earrings and parts of sets. At least with money you're just losing the value of it, sentimental stuff is extra frustrating because the value it has to you is so much more than the amount they'll get for it.

is it just me or are break ins way less common now?
i don't know anyone who has had their house/apartment broken into in the last 20 years..
when i was younger it seemed like a fairly common thing to be afraid of, like quicksand, the bermuda triangle, or eating before swimming..
