StarCraft 2 will be an RTS largely in the same vein as its predecessor. The game will feature the same three races: Protoss, Zerg, and Terran. Action will unfold on the same type of 2D plane as before, with multitiered maps that ground units must use ramps to move between. Graphics have been updated significantly, many new units added, and some old units removed. Blizzard was unwilling to divulge much about how the Zerg and Terran forces have changed, but shed some light on the new developments for the Protoss. Story specifics are still being kept under wraps, though from the concept art it seems Kerrigan will somehow be involved. The game will release "when it's done" for PC and Mac only. It's currently in pre-alpha stages of development, and has been in production at Blizzard since the release of WarCraft 3: The Frozen Throne in 2003.

I think Blizzard is content with using the millions of WoW addicts as cash cows. After all they're making millions of dollars in profit every month! The amount of revenue that came from previous Blizzard titles is minuscule compared to WoW.

Oh, back to Starcraft 2. Would be awsome to finally play the second game in the series, if it's anything as close to as good as Starcraft was in...was it '98? Then it'd still be one of the greatest games out. Seeing as how all other Blizzard projects have seemed to disappear since the success of WoW, I highly doubt they will have Starcraft 2 out any time in the near future. In fact I heard many programmers and developers of the original Blizzard games are leaving the company for that reason.

I'd love to have a new MMO come out that is much better than WoW, and have Blizzard fall flat on their faces for relying on ONE game for the entire companies income!

I'm sure they will bring back BGH. It's classic. Even if they don't, some fan with pro map editor skills will make the map. So no worry. They will probably bring back Lost Temple as well.

I heard a rumor about a playable demo will be released later this year. The full game will not be released until at least 1-2 years. I highly doubt any sooner than that. I'm not sure how long ago have they begun this project, but I would expect it would take about 2-3 years to complete this game from beginning to end.

Test playing alone to get the three races balanced will probably take a year already.

damn... not the best quality of video, so hard to tell. But I'm not liking the zerg buildings. Gonna take some time to get used to the way they are designed I guess.

The only thing that worries me is that this isn't going to be better than SC1. First few years, expect lots of patches and imbalance play. SC1 took a while before it became to the point of perfection of balance. Like Chess calibre of balance. Now that's hardcore.

I realized that the screenshot might be year or two old and no doubt sc1 graphics was ahead of its time, but even at that, these games are separated by ten friggin years. Looking at many other games with sequels spread out over a decade's period you'd see an extreme drastic change in graphics. I find RTS graphics dont improve a whole lot (if you compare the first C&C with the latest RA2)

Gameplay may be a whole nother story.

Blizzard always goes for the stylized but yet can be run on dated machines, look at wow if they had cutting edge graphics they would have never reached 12 million subs!

if you want an excellent RTS with breathtaking graphics check out the Company of Heroes series (GOTY many times) its made by Relic who are local in Vancouver! or Dawn of War 2 (not my style, but same engine as CoH)

Blizzard tends to go in the more cartoony theme for their graphics. So often their units and structures aren't proportional, but it's alright with me. Because they have the best fun factor.
There's a bunch of other RTS games which are fun. And StarCraft is just in a legaue on it's own.

UPDATE: Blizzard just called to let us know that the system specs released on the page were not the system specs for the StarCraft II beta test. They are still trying to track down how the page appeared on the company's support site, suspecting that someone pasted specs from World of Warcraft into a new article. The link below is now dead, and Blizzard has a lot of phone calls to make.

Blizzard informed us that the real specs will most likely be released via a FAQ or the support site once the beta dates are announced.

Incidentally, Blizzard's Bob Colayco sounds an awful lot like a bill collector, and this update nearly didn't happen.

Blizzard eyeing mid-2010 release, digital version coming.

February 10, 2010 - The wait for Starcraft fans is almost over.

During Activision's financial 2009 earnings call this afternoon, Blizzard president and co-founder Mike Morhaime announced the closed beta for StarCraft II will launch towards the end of February.

The title is still on track for a mid-2010 release. The beta will also help Blizzard test and optimize its new Battle.net service, which it plans to launch and implement in all future Blizzard game titles.

A digital version of Starcraft II is also set to be available for purchase off Battle.net.

initial impressions are i think fans of this game wont be dissapointed. it could use a bit of polish, but its a beta so im not complaining.

lots of new units, buildings to get used to and some nice features that make the game a bit easier to micro, at least for zerg. Also, geographical features play a bigger role than before, kinda makes it interesting.
