There was some "Perfect Storm" style show on Discovery a while ago that explored different scenarios of catastrophies on Earth. One of the episodes was this exact thing. It went into pretty good technical detail about the magnetic polaraties of these solar storms versus the Earth's own atmosphere and how it's possible for a sunspot to break through Earth's natural defense.
Quite interesting.
