2012 Catastrophe? NASA says it could happen...
 

There was some "Perfect Storm" style show on Discovery a while ago that explored different scenarios of catastrophies on Earth. One of the episodes was this exact thing. It went into pretty good technical detail about the magnetic polaraties of these solar storms versus the Earth's own atmosphere and how it's possible for a sunspot to break through Earth's natural defense.

It hits Earth all the time. There's just only a specific kind that will actually rip through the atmosphere, and the ones that hit us are usually too weak to do anything.

I hate these conspiracy theorist prediciting armageddon...they've made up such dates so many times before...it's to the point where they're just crying wolf.

Anyways...religion has totally fucked up the world's mindset...we ignore the fact we originated from worms in the dirt...we're a spec in the universe...and our civilization can be wiped out in a second and no one would ever know.
