Winter Tires: time to put them on?

my co worker runs on snow tires all season..lol
How can you do that? I've had my snows on for a week already and since temps aren't really that low I've noticed a HUGE decrease in performance. Much less grip and way noisier.
Easier to get the back loose tho hehe.

Actually, once the sipes become useless, there's usually still 6-7/32nds left. That's what I run for mid-season tires (Sept.-Nov., Mar.-May). They work great in the rain and are nice and soft when it's cold out.

I know summer tires are that good when it dips below +7C, how about winter tires?

Accident without winter tires could hike premiums
But ICBC says it shouldn't void your insurance
* Tamara Slobogean/Vancouver Sun
* 2010/11/19
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - ICBC has a reminder, and a warning, if you plan on driving in the snow this season. If you do crash while trying to negotiate slushy or snowy streets, your car better have the right gear.
If it turns out you're more than 25 per cent to blame for an accident on wintery roads, you can expect to pay the price with your insurance premiums. That's something it seems few are aware of on Vancouver streets.
A woman tells us, "I did not know that, I wasn't aware of it. But luckily, my husband is on the ball and I have snow tires."
Another person says, "I'll think more before I go driving down the hill... But I see people driving past me; I drive no faster than I can slide."
ICBC tells the Vancouver Sun driving without the right winter tires may not be the smartest move, but ultimately it won't affect your ability to make a claim, and shouldn't void your insurance.
Thanks for the article. I heard about it before but its a good reminder.

good to know
but just a fyi
even with winter tires, you still have to drive carefully. I test it on SFU yesterday where there was a 45 degree hill, even driving 20km and slamming on the brake (simulate emergency situation) and i still felt hopeless kept sliding and ABS pumping like mad

Snow tires in winter does not equal slicks in summer time

Maybe less Slamming on your brakes as in an emergency situation and more applying even pressure would be a good idea ;)

Remember people with snow tires its not how fast you can go.. Its all about the stopping distance.. Snow tires help but they can fail over a patch of ice on u instantly...
I remember one time driving my beater on the #1 hwy and saw this 4x4 suv ripping past me... Well about 5 mins later down the road at the bend guess who was in the ditch... The guy did have snow tires but because of speed and the turn he lost control and went into the ditch...

Yeah, try to avoid doing any sort of work with a spare tire jack. Those things are just sketchy at best. As for the rims sticking to the hub, some people put some sort of lubricant in between when they change their rims, but I don't bother. If it sticks, just kick it again. It's not like you're going to do much damage to anything by doing so.

So I'm buying a set of winter tires for my wife's Impreza...the following two tires meet our budget
General Altimax Arctic (winter premium)
Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3d (winter performance).
Both seem to get average reviews, I'm tempted to go with the General Altimax Arctic, based solely on the fact that they are winter premium tires. I currently have a set of Yokohama AVS Winter V901 on my RSX which were rated as winter performance. In dry and wet conditions, they are great, but in the snow, they are no better than just regular season tires...any thoughts?

I've used performance winter tires in the past, they're alright in most Vancouver winters, but in hard winters when you really need them they're useless.
I'd much rather have a safer winter tire designed to handle snow.

You honestly can't.. you should also check the date code on the tires to make sure it is not old. Tires are like food.. the newer the better.

For those with summer on alloy wheels.. wash, clean and wax.. before you store them for the winter. The wax will help with brake dust not stick to the wheels next summer. Any cheapie wax will do. I typically use NuFinish.

Look at the year it was produced and look at the remaining tread.

+ Check for fine cracks in the outer layer of rubber. You can usually see them between the tread blocks.
Just because they're less than 5 years old, the rubber could still show signs of dry rotting/hardening.

So far my General Altimax Arctics have been superb performers.
Just for shits and giggles, on the night it actually snowed, I had my Traction control completely off and there was no slipping that was uncontrollable. A little bit of slip off the line, but was easily dealt with. Going up and down hill (king george highway before the bridge) was no problems at all.
So far, these tires have gone above and beyond my expectations. Definitely a good purchase.

^^^^ 5-15cm
Summary
Total snowfall amounts from 5 to 15 cm are forecast for the south coast by Thursday afternoon and evening. This is a warning that significant snowfall is expected in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.
Details
Light snow continues to fall over parts of the south coast late this afternoon as a weak warm front remains draped over the area. However a second more moisture laden system will make its down from north b.C coast tonight and cause snowfall rates to increase overnight over the region. The snow will change to rain Thursday afternoon over most regions as the frontal system draws in milder marine air from the pacific. Over the inland regions like the Fraser Valley..Howe Sound..And Inland Vancouver Island the change over to rain will be delayed until Thursday night or even early Friday morning. Patchy freezing rain is also possible over the inland valleys late Thursday when the transition from snow to rain occurs. Total snowfall accumulations will generally be between 5 and 10 centimetres. Inland regions will receive closer to 15 cm total snowfall.

If you perform non-emergency repairs or upgrades to any vehicle in the states, when you pass back through the border your vehicle will be taxed at its total value, not just the repair value. I believe you also are required to submit to the entire vehicle importation process.
Will you get caught, maybe not, but if you do those will be the most expensive tires you ever bought. My uncle took the gamble a few years back, he was caught and I guarantee he regrets it.

The exact details from CBSA website:
Repairs or alterations to your vehicle/ vessel/aircraft
If you intend to have repairs or alterations made to your vehicle/vessel/aircraft outside Canada, check with the CBSA for information before you leave. Under customs legislation, the CBSA can no longer consider your vehicle, vessel or aircraft to be Canadian-made if you increase its value, improve its condition or have it modified outside Canada. As a result, you may have to pay duty and the goods and services tax (GST) or harmonized sales tax (HST) on the entire value of the vehicle/vessel/aircraft when you bring it back.
No duty will apply to the value of the repairs or alterations made to your vehicle/vessel/aircraft in the United States, Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, Israel or another Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement beneficiary when it is re-imported into Canada; however, the GST/HST will apply.
Emergency repairs can be made to your vehicle/vessel/aircraft while you are travelling outside the country to ensure your safe return to Canada. However, to be eligible for this special provision, be sure to declare the value of all repairs and replacement parts when you return to Canada with the vehicle.
Transport Canada also has requirements for vehicles that are extensively modified. For more information, contact Transport Canada's Registrar of Imported Vehicles at 1-888-848-8240.
False declarations and the seizure of goods
If you do not declare goods, or if you falsely declare them, the CBSA can seize the goods. This means that you may lose the goods permanently or that you may have to pay a penalty to get them back. Depending on the type of goods and the circumstances involved, the CBSA may impose a penalty that ranges from 25% to 80% of the value of the seized goods.
In addition, the Customs Act provides border services officers with the authority to seize all vehicles that were used to import goods unlawfully. When this happens, the CBSA imposes a penalty that you must pay before the vehicle is returned to you.
If you do not declare tobacco products and alcoholic beverages at the time of importation, the CBSA will seize them permanently.
A record of infractions is kept in the CBSA computer system. If you have an infraction record, you may have to undergo a more detailed examination on future trips. You may also become ineligible for the NEXUS and CANPASS programs.
If your goods were seized and you disagree with the action taken, you can appeal by writing a letter to the CBSA within 90 days of the date of the seizure. You can find more information about the appeal process on your seizure receipt form.

He didn't change tires, he changed another part.
I'm glad it works, but I don't see how tires new tires don't, "increase its value, improve its condition or have it modified outside Canada". I'd ask for an email confirming having tires installed is not included in the restrictions, from CBSA, before you cross the border. That way you have a hard copy evidence they said its okay if the person you spoke to was wrong. Thats just my opinion though.

I notice the noise mostly at low speeds just like having rocks in your tire. Drives just like my summer tire during the warmer seasons, I still drive the same speeds as usual with regards to the road conditions. The studs probably does reduce traction in bare roads a small amount, but I rather be prepared and normally keep my distance from other cars in front of me.

Yes, it is very slick out there especially on residential driveways and side streets etc. Definitely get the snow tires on and go smooth and easy.

I'd say its time to switch when the temps are consistently below 7 degrees

Which is why I have an old set of snow tires for mid-seasons. 5-6/32nds isn't going to do much in the snow but still work great in colder temps.

I'm planning to head down South to purchase a set of winter tires.
Going to cost around $900-1000 if I pick it up at Blaine / Point Robert.
I'm expected and prepared to pay the 12% tax.
What about the "duty"? What's the percentage?
Anyone purchased tires from the States lately? How many were you dinged at the border?

i usually swap them on late october/early november... or whenever i start to see frost on the road... my summer tires are actual summer tires, not all seasons, and don't stick at all when cold... can't even get down my alley...
Since I'm using extreme performance summer tires, I'll probably swap on my winter tires in the 2 weeks, depending on the temperature.

Me here. Bought 4 performance tires and various parts in July totaling $800ish USD and shipped to Pt. Roberts. I declared everything and was charged only the HST.
The shipment contained parts made outside of NAFTA.
Bought 2 replacement tires in September totaling $350USD and shipped to PT again. Declared everything and was waved off.
Did not pay attention to the origin of these tires, nor did it matter.
Act proper and declare what you have, you'd be fine.
Before you ask, TSB Shipping and $5/tire.

I'm going to fully declare everything (well kind hard not to when you have huge tires in your trunk + 2nd row)
And I'm calculating into the cost, that I'm expecting to pay the 12% HST.
But worries me is, I might possibility get taxed 943284234% "duties" as well.
Since the tires won't be made within North America for sure.

You are most welcome. I am a lurker. RS is too much for a softie like me.
In my many years and countless times of crossing, at all points of entry, Peach Arch, Pacific and PT. I have never been charged more than just the HST, nor was I ever asked if the parts were made inside NAFTA. Many times they did not even ask for any paperwork, they just took whatever value I verbally declared and charged me tax.
And I have not bought tires locally for a looooooong time.
So it comes down to this. In my experience at PT, if your single shipment is around 300 to 400 USD or less, the chance of you being waved off is very high. Having said that, maybe you get a buddy to help you carry two tires and each declare only two tires. Of cuz you don't wanna cross back to back.
Alternatively, head into Blaine or Bellingham and have tires mounted there and drive back with fresh rubber. IMHO the chance of you being waved off is higher, it simply shows you are honest and cooperating. Of course, don't try to lie, new tires look..........new.
Pro tip: Greet the officer, act nice, cooperate fully but DO NOT over-volunteer more information than what's being asked.
Hope it helps.

I brought back winter tires last winter and they didn't charge me for it. They just asked if it was for me and if it was DOT certified. I told them they were for my car and they were bridgestone blizzaks and they let me go. Like others have said... be nice to them and maybe you won't get dinged.

Depends. I've been through Pt. Roberts and most of the time I get taxed and have to pay duty. The last few times I went through Blaine and use the truck crossing and was lucky and didn't get taxed.
YMMV.
I put WS60s on yesterday at Discount Tire in Bellingham. Came back through peace arch and, unsurprisingly, paid tax.
All good, saved about $300 tho.

I only know from going to Blaine, but every time I have brought rims or tires across I have had to pay duty.
It seems people are getting taxed more often at Peace Arch than at Point Roberts, I might have to switch which border I get my stuff shipped to.

They might not charge you duty, but you get charged:
- 100% the HST tax,
- BC's provincial tire fee, AND
- a brokerage fee.
I rather take the trip cross the border, full declare everything...and have the chance of having the tax waived through.

For example,
........................Ship to WA............................Ship to Vancouver
Tire & Rims:......$760................................... .$760
UPS Shipping:...$130.................................. ..$271
Tax:................$0............................ ...........$98.81
Duty:.............. $0.......................................$13.44
Provincial Tire Fee: $0....................................$20
Brokerage Fee: $0.........................................$30
Grand Total: $893 USD...............................$1193 USD
Excluding my gas $:
If I get waived through: $300 difference
If I have to pay HST: $193 difference
If I have to pay HST & Duty: $140 difference
Receiving tires from one of the shipping company's: Max $20-30 USD
Unless you really don't have the time to drive down yourself, it works out to be cheaper by going down South.
P.S: For those that's been charged HST at the border, do you remember if
they charge you on the product's value? or both the product + shipping's amount?

Some members have used it, its not bad...but it really varies from tire to tire, brand to brand, size to size.
For example, the ones I want are:
$121 / tire at Tire Rack
$178 / tire at 1010
$18x / tire at Costco
$19x / tire at Canadian Tire
$200+++ at dealerships.
So depending what tires you want...might or might not work for some people.

+1 I've only used DTD since I started driving, their free shipping means they are usually the cheapest + they price match. I also get a discount ($50 off order of $500 or more, $100 off order of $1000 or more) because they screwed up my last order
If they don't show a wheel or tire on their website try giving them a call, I got an awesome deal on some special TSW's. Also by calling you can order wheels with any size hubcentric ring (sometimes online selection doesn't let you run aggressive offsets and in my case wobble bolts)
I strongly prefer the DTD way of finding rims, they might not have a lot of the premium wheel brands that tirerack does, but of what they do have everything is clearly listed and you can search by wheel size rather than vehicle specific.

Cause if you do get asked to go inside...they will be looking over the receipts, and I'm not sure if the shipping cost will make the "grand total" price look higher than before.
