I'll wait until like mid-November. I've got a line on some winter wheels and a set of Goodyear Ultra Grip tires through my dealership. I'm not running the winter on shitty ecsta asx's, which I'm probably gonna sell with the rims they're mounted on, and get rota slips for next srping.

First winter tires ftw.

General Altimax's are very nice. I've been using them for two seasons (last season barely any snow, but the winter before that was insane!)

At least start preparing. Winter tire stock will be dwindling, and tire stores are only going to get busier moving forward.

Do you plan on driving long distances? For me I would do it for the $10/tire that Speed Syndicate charges.

I was out driving today and I noticed my car being a little twitchy... being on summers, the heavy rain and the temperature nearing 9c, I'm not surprised.

Time is soon!

i would say average 20k to 30k sounds about right

a lot of high end vehicles uses their tires, porsche as one. have you seen their ultra all season DWS as well as max performance summer tires DW category?

lots ppl uses their general tires line up as well because its cheaper and decent performance

you honestly only need snow tires if it's really really cold or heavily snowing aroud here.

been using all-season tires on all cars in the past years and they've done just fine in rain/snow/cold icey conditions... just gotta drive more carefull, simple as that.

Studded tires aren't necessary for Vancouver winters... As long as you have 4 winter tires that have good tread and are bought within 5 years (7 years from manufacture, or 5 years since driving on them), you're good.

Winter tires uses a different rubber compound compared to all seasons/summers. When the temperature outside drops below 7'C, winter tires won't harden like summers/all seasons. You will notice much better traction from acceleration and braking/turning on winters.

IMO, winter tires are both a good investment and insurance. One accident that can be avoided if you had better traction from proper winter tires will pay for the tires already. You'll also have the joy of laughing at everyone else that gets stuck because they don't have winters on, while you drive around them. :D

^ Very true! One of the best things I bought for my daily driver. My snow tires have saved my ass on more than one occasion. Worth the $$.

Don't be one of those assholes they show on the news, blocking traffic all sideways and shit, because you still have summer tires on. I don't give a fuck if your Bimmer has xdrive or whatever, you might end up killing yourself. Or worse, someone else.

I just hope that we don't get a monster dump of snow, like we did back in Dec '08. Although I love snow, it just got too deep! I ended up plowing the snow and got stuck a few times. Even with 4 snow tires. Which is why I also carry a shovel (metal ftw, helps to bust up ice) with me in the car when it's snowing outside. Not just for me, but to help others get going should need be.

Ever since I got stuck in a blizzard coming down from Whistler, I have loved snow tires. My family got down in our Sienna with X-Ice tires just fine, while we watched dozens of cars slide into the ditch on the old Sea to Sky.

Last winter, I was hit multiple times by drivers without snow tires because they couldn't turn/stop in time. I never had an issue getting stuck or being unable to move... it was just the other drivers who were more dangerous.

And like Spoon_Fed says, the only time I ever got stuck was getting high-centered because of too much snow.

i just bought 2 tires 205/65/15 can i put 2 195/55/15 on the front?
Or they have to all be the same size.

Hey,

I have a set of 205/50R/16 Winter Tires. Do you guys know where's the cheapest place to buy a set of steelies for them are?

Some people mentioned Sorat, any other places (I live in Surrey), also.. what's a good price range for the rims?

Tire rack sells rims for $85 US each

Thanks!

5x114.3 is the bolt pattern. For a 2003 Mazda Protege 5

That's a 2" height difference! (I think) It will look pretty funny, but can't be worse than having 2 pairs of mismatched all seasons, you'll probably get a really inaccurate speedometer,

Sure it can be worse. Now, you're not just varying traction front to rear, but you're also changing weight balance.

Careful buying used OEM wheels. Mazda has the largest centre bore (67.1mm) so Honda, Toyota and Nissan rims won't fit.

You either have to get Mazda wheels or ones off a Mitsubishi, Ford Escape, Probe, Grand Caravan or go aftermarket.

edit: Add Hyundai and Kia to OEM wheels with a 67.1 CB, 5x114.3 BP

Set of 4 steel wheels.
16"x6.5"

These will fit almost all 5 Lug cars and SUV

You're not going to get anything near that if you're going for brand new.

Tires alone would cost 500+ for a good set of 4.

Wheels will oxidize against the rotor top and/or hub. When you had the wheels off, it would've been a good idea to brush some Never Seize on there.

If you ever need to kick a wheel off and you're only using a scissor jack, make sure the wheels are chocked, the parking brake is applied and only one corner is jacked up.

general altimax arctic in 205/55/16 :D

unfortunately when i was going to make my purchase for 15 inch steels with general tires, steelies were already sold out, and plus I didn't want to shell out 82 bucks per alloy wheel before shipping and taxes.

Hey guys , I am a noob. Just wondering if the whole ICBC won't cover you if you get into an accident and you don't have Winter tires is happening in Vancouver too?

fliptuner
11-16-2010, 08:27 PM
AFAIK with ICBC, it's a question of whether the tires are suitable for the conditions. Last year A/S would've been fine but if things go as predicted, this year, winters are a must.

My rims, tires @ 90%, lug nuts and the key cost $150.
An older guy sold me his sons rims, because he left them in his garage. I love craigslist.

Could someone please confirm, that ICBC requires tires be suitable for driving conditions for coverage to valid. That would make sense on mountain roads and the interior, but a lot of people in Vancouver use all seasons year round regardless of snow; I can't imagine none of them having coverage in the event of an accident..

They will still cover you if you don't have winter tires. Winter tires are NOT mandatory in BC. But your insurance will raise if you do get into accident though

godwin
11-17-2010, 12:34 AM
They still cover you.. basically they have more reasons to find you at fault.. driving without considering the weather / equipment etc. Unless of course you drove where snow tires / chains were mandatory with your summer slicks.

And I definitely wouldn't run SUMMER tires in the winter like I've seen out there.
