We may be less than a month into winter but honestly, who the hell predicts this "coldest winter" gibberish? Fall was a lot colder than it is now.

My winter tires are feeling the pain.

I think you'll get away with a good set of all season tires. Nothing worrying up there, my FWD 1.6EL had no problems getting there and back. Was up there just this past Saturday.

I wouldn't do summers during this time around, night time has been pretty cold.

That means the compound on your summers will be hard as a puck.

wow..super slippery out there...winter tires didnt do jack against the ice..although i'm sure if i left the all seasons on i'd be spinning out.

Coming back from the US, some douchebag overtook me on 264, and promptly hit black ice and spun out. Luckily I was doing ~40, and was able to stop. I believe the Blizzaks helped.

Edit: I was out at 3 AM on the Highway, the car with snows held up very well. I even got to see an idiot in a Range Rover on 22s spinning all fours going up a little hill. I had to slow down to go around him, and he literally rolled down the window to stare at me, in a BMW "horrendous in snow" 740 driving past. Made my night.

how much tread depth determines the winter tires unusable?

Paradise240
01-15-2012, 10:51 AM
Theres 3 wear bars on tires. 11/32" or 12/32" is a new tire.

Anything above 6/32" allows the tire to "bite" into the snow, giving you enough traction to get moving. 6/32" would be the "tallest" bar in your tread pattern.

At 4/32", they're acceptable for rain as the tread is still deep enough for rain to escape through the grooves of the tire. This should be the 2nd tallest bar.

Legally, you need to replace them when they hit 2/32" which at this point, is only sufficient for dry weather. They'll look really worn, and you shouldn't have to look at the wear bar to replace them.

roastpuff
01-15-2012, 07:37 PM
For winter tires I would replace at 4/32" to maximize snow traction capability.

Im looking for some winter tires to replace my stockies on my 2011 Civic coupe, its the stock 16inch rims. with 205/55/16. I found some at walmart for like $45 bucks a tire, and saw some at costco for $200 a tire. Any recommendations?

fliptuner
01-16-2012, 12:12 AM
If there are no changes to the brake size from the previous gen (06-10), you should be able to fit 15's on there w/ 195/65/15's. Do you know if the entry level model runs 15" wheels? From my understanding, only the Si requires a bigger wheel.

edit - didn't realize they ran that model for 6 years. If you want to go cheaper, run the 15's.

godwin
01-16-2012, 02:52 PM
I don't think you should rely just on the bars.. since different brands / model of tires, the winter compounds are not applied evenly on all the plies. Some are only on the first 4/32 etc.. there are no strict rules and they don't tell you.. I would say 5 - 6 years is about time to change a set... assuming you put it on about 4-5 months of the year. Test drive before a snow fall, ~5C you can feel the weight transfer is not right, it is time to change.

In the end, winter tires are much cheaper than equivalent all seasons / high performance summer tires. It boggles my mind, people complain about the cost of tires for extreme weather conditions, yet more than happy to shell out 1-2k for summer tires.

how much tread depth determines the winter tires unusable?

Notice it is 14 day TREND not forecast. I think they just do a correlation between historic high/ low and current temp.. so you would notice crazy low temperatures usually happen when we have a few hours of unseasonably cold temperatures.

I think the best weather forecasters in the world can do max 48-72 hours of forecast with decent certainty.. and we are talking about places with tons of resources like NOAA.. vs Environment Canada or worse Weather Network which just regurgitates information with pretty talking heads (http://missmeteo.clubdiscussion.net/t331p60-nicole-karkic).

I didn't quite find the answer in this thread (too much to go through), but here's a question for running summer tires during the winter months.

I know that the cold cold weather and heat cycling will ruin the tire compounds. but by how much? a noticeable amount? I was mostly driving my winter beater this winter, but did drive my summer car around here and there when it was dry or even raining.
