Hmm thinking of switching to the 100 bundle. So my dlink 655 router will not work with that plan and i'm force to use that shitty smc router they provide?
i have the same router (http://dlink.ca/products/?pid=530) and it works just fine.. mind you, i'm using the motorola modem

I've heard rumors that they're gonna upgrade to the cisco modems sometime this summer, so it should be soon. Right now the SMC modem in bridge/gateway mode is fine, as its just acting as the modem.

As for the terrible speeds, it could be that they're adding infrastructure to those areas to accomodate for the 100mbps and 250mbps phases and just not telling anyone. A few years back they did that in my area which was kind of annoying haha..

The best way is to just simply call up shaw technical support, tell them where you live, and your account# if they ask for it. After you get that sorted out, you can tell them that you want your SMC modem/wireless router set into bridge/gateway mode as you have your own router and do not need the wifi capabilities of the SMC modem. It'll take about 10 minutes for the guy to sort it out, but once he's done the SMC modem will reset itself, he'll ask you to check if it still works, usually by just connecting an ethernet cable directly to the modem and see if you have internet access.

Once this is done you're free to hook up whatever router you want.

Pretty lame that they lock it down like that and don't give u the password. It sounds like they're just remote accessing into the router config page and making the change.

Yeah, they do give you a password, but you can't change anything, I tried it a few times everytime it reset went back to default settings. So yeah they pretty much just access it remotely.

Service has been great. I pay a one-time fee of $50 to purchase their configuration file for your ATA, and another $25 to transfer your phone number from your existing telephone provider, and I purchased an ATA (Linksys PAP2T-NA.. from NCIX.. cost was $50).. Total cost was about $125 to switch my services. A one-time fee, and I don't have to worry about paying phone bill again. It's unlimited Canada calling by the way.

Basically, your cordless/corded phone is connected to a ATA adapter (with 2 lines, if you purchase the PAP2T-NA), and the ATA is connected to your router. Change a few settings in your ATA adapter and your router (QOS). Voila, it's up.

In my opinion, it's much better than traditional landline, cause you can track everything online (call logs, voicemail messages, call forwarding, etc). It comes with free call display too.

Yeah the 100mbps will automatically be switched to 250mbps down in Phase II. In my opinion, Telus doesn't have the infrastructure in place to achieve the internet speed that Shaw can provide to their customers. Not anytime soon.

Here's why, the technology that Telus uses for their Optik TV is shit. Most of the bandwidth is consolidated for IPTV. They can barely squeeze enough bandwidth for their television users, so it's not much left for their internet users.

Take a look at the HD channels on Telus's Optik TV, it's worse of that of Shaw's HD cause they need to compress their data so much to provide their television service; therefore, the picture and sound quality suffers tremendously. They barely have enough bandwidth to sufficiently provide "HD" content to their televison base customers. Forget internet users.

lets just hope telus will improve their network pretty soon! i can't do anything right now since i just moved to telus from shaw and i got the agreement which is 3 years for the tv and 2 years for the internet.. Oh well.. so far i think the hd on the optik is pretty good.. i dont watch tv that much since busy with work... but internet is pretty good even though someone is watching tv... i just want to have a faster download and upload speeds that would be similar to what shaw is offering right now with their broadband 50 and 100 ...

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think that's Shaw's new IPTV service. It looks to me (from a quick glance of the site) that it's just a new set-top box with those new features.

I don't see any mentioning of recording TV shows with your mobile phone, etc.

Though I am aware that Shaw is planning to roll out their IPTV service in the near future, and is currently running trials with their current employees.

And it's 2HD/1SD with Telus. Like I mention in the other post, they have a poor infrastructure for their current Optik TV service.

telus' optik tv sucks balls... limited to only a couple tvs, crappy hd picture quality, your internet speeds take a hit while watching hd, also contracts... really, contracts, really???

this new shaw gateway service is intriguing. will it be the same shaw picture quality and contract free? does anyone know if it is still cable based or ip based? also when is this service launching in vancouver?

Worth it to buy the discontinued motorola modem for $80? Like how to get shaw to add it and is it easy?
don't purchase it

shaw will not add equipment onto their network if it's been bought from an unauthorized location
the sb6120 (http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/CA-EN/Consumer-Products-and-Services/Cable-Modems-and-Gateways/SURFboard-Cable-Modem-SB6120-CA-EN) was only ever rented from shaw, there's no current way to purchase it
if you do somehow manage to get the modem and call in, they won't be able to add it onto your account easily. they'll have to get it escalated to another department to add it in manually as the codes don't exist anymore for any csr/tsr to add it in for you

So you just called them and told them you want to upgrade? and the smc modem/router is not required? I'm using their motorola docis modem http://img01.static-nextag.com/image/Motorola-SBV5120-Cable-Modem/0/000/008/228/154/822815485.jpg. I'm asking cause i remember reading some where that the docis can't support the 100Mbps throughput.
sorry, i forgot to specify that i'm using the motorola docsis 3 modem

if you're using the docsis 2 modem, it'll only go up to 25 Mbps. if you have a higher package, they'll give you a docsis 3 modem instead

^ you can't use that motorola, for a while shaw was carrying a docsis3 capable motorola modem, but switched it for a much cheaper and crappier smc router/modem combo. You would have to get the discontinued motorola docsis3 modem somehow.
there's no current method that i could think of for you to get the discontinued modem

from what i understand, the gateway is cable based

they've mentioned the possibility to be able to record from your phone.. but that's later in the future

the interface to the gateway is quite different and looks a lot better compared to the older digital terminals

i have yet to hear anything about iptv from shaw

telus' optik tv sucks balls... limited to only a couple tvs, crappy hd picture quality, your internet speeds take a hit while watching hd, also contracts... really, contracts, really???

i have telus optik, and HD is nowhere near as good as OTA, but pretty much the same as shaw hd that iv'e seen at my friends houses. my internet speed does NOT drop while watching hd. i pretty much always have a tv on and i get my full 15mbit down.

contracts for cheaper/free stuff. if you don't want a contract, it's just regular price.

the lady sounded nice and said um lets see what we can do for you. and she said 16 bux a month (for 6 months only). but then again i can call em up 6 months later and threaten them im switching again.

i have a feeling its not just the threatening im switching over. its also cuz im in a building with fibre optic.

my friend did the same thing but only got 23 bux or something cuz he lives in a residential area with no fibre.

mind you i was actually gonna switch to shaws 100mbps, but i lied cuz i knew telus couldnt offer 100mbps, and they presented me a deal i couldnt walk away from. so i took it. it's basically free man, 16 buxs a month is chump change.

I'm still on Shaw's 25 plan and want to see some results before I make a move up to the next level. I barely hit anything about 20 with my speed tests and often enough I'm getting 4-6 WIRED directly...

The worst part is when I try to call Shaw for support, I have to wait for over 2 hours to reach someone only to have them tell me "restart my router/modem" which of course, I already have. This speed is consistent when I connect my router to the modem as well and it's consistent through a variety of different routers.

Although their prices are fairly competitive, their service is absolutely horrid. I think it's a unanimously agreed fact that it's quite the task getting a hold of Shaw's Technical Support and now equally hard to get a hold of someone to cancel/change/or create a new service.

MikeyStyle
09-11-2011, 05:38 PM
there are a lot of factors that will affect the internet speeds.. have you just tried running one computer directly to the modem and run a speed test from there?

the wait times are quite ridiculous right now.. if given the callback option, i would highly suggest for you to take it or even try to get in touch with someone through the online chat (https://shaw.ca/Secure/Contact-Us/Customer-Chat/)

generally early morning is the shortest wait.. anywhere from 30-60 minutes.. but if you try calling in later in the day.. you'll be waiting at least +3 hours to be able to talk to a representative

At this point, you can call me crazed because I've literally exhausted EVERY option.

I did connect the router DIRECTLY to my PC to see if speed test results were any better and they were but only by a fraction (1 or 2 mb/s). So nothing strong enough for me to say it's an issue with router connectivity or interference from other devices.

Shaw has taken away the "Call-Back option" during these busy times and you MUST wait on hold. Also, the online chat support does NOT work. It just keeps waiting for a rep. and then says "no rep available, try again later."

I've tried calling in the morning, the middle of the day and 3 AM as well...All wait times 2+ hours. If I'm lucky, I'll get connected...

It's quite a slap in the face for them to put us on hold for that long. As if we don't have anything better to do but spend 1/2 hour day on the phone to troubleshoot Internet Connectivity. My job as a customer is to ensure that money is going into their company every month. Their job is to ensure that I get either adequate service or adequate support...I don't expect both! But I'm not getting either...

if you've tried every option.. the only other thing left to do is to have a technician come out to your place with a laptop to run some tests of their own to see what's going on

as for the callback option.. it does get turned off later in the evening since no callbacks are allowed after 9 pm from what i've been told.. but you should get the option during the day at least

i totally agree with you. it definitely does suck being the customer trying to call in and not being able to get help right away.. but nothing's going to change overnight. every day it's been +3 hours on hold with at least +1,000 people waiting

I've been trying to switch from Shaw to Telus since February. Telus is in my area, my house is wired for Fibre but there hasn't been any ports available in my area since I called 7 months ago. I've been calling 2-4 times a month since then and still nothing. I can't believe how dumb they are not to install more ports, I know I'm not the only one who wants to switch but can't in my area.

Now I've ordered Sunday Ticket I won't be calling back until Jan, if they don't have ports available by then I don't know what to say. I think what makes me even more irritated is the fact they don't have a waiting list for ports. I should be put on a list along with anyone else who wants the service and calls should be given in the order of the list as ports become available, it's not rocket science.

The area I live in has a retarded amount of new homes, the population in this area has exploded over the last 6 years. I don't understand why they wouldn't want to capitalize on that. I'd love to switch from Shaw, I own PVR's for both carriers so I wouldn't have to sign a contract but it's all for not.

Are you using a old modem? Make sure it's the new black motorola model. Back when I was still using 7.5, I was so pissed that my dls maxed out at ~500kB/s (4Mbps). Got a tech to come and check out what's wrong and he simply replaced the old terrapin modem with the moto and I managed to hit 1,000kB/s regularly. Same black modem is serving me well now even on 25 (hitting 2.8-3 MB/s regularly with torrents)

anyone been having troubles with the connection? shaw internet has been disconnecting and reconnecting for the last two days renfrew community center area.

I have had the same kind of problem in a sense

I have a splitter: wall -> splitter -> to shaw PVR and shaw modem

ever since last week it has cut me on and off the interent as the modem resets....I replaced the splitter and the cable wires and the problem is the same...However when i go wall -> shaw modem I have no problems

Anyone have a problem like this? and maybe a solution?

^ Maybe something to do with not having enough power to have the cable split? I don't remember the correct terminology for all of this, but it happened to another house of mine a year ago. The drop in whatever (voltage, current, i dont know what it is) from the line coming into the house to the splitter wasnt enough. So they had to replace the outside wire or something (again, not sure what exactly happened).

Interesting I had the tech guy come into today (I was not home) and he replaced the cables/spittler... however my mom said it worked for a bit then stoped working again...I had to wait a week for this guy to come tell me everything will be fine with a new splitter....But I'll call Shaw back tomorrow and see if that is what the issue could be....THANKS!

It seems odd that this happens all of the sudden!!!

I need my internets to play NHL 12 tomorrow

CRTC to rule on unlimited Internet plans from smaller telecom providers (http://www.theprovince.com/technology/CRTC+rule+unlimited+Internet+plans+from+smaller+te lecom+providers/5708439/story.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter)

OTTAWA - Consumers will know Tuesday whether unlimited Internet plans offered by small, upstart companies are on their way out.

Canada's telecommunications regulator's ruling on wholesale high-speed access services, to be released when markets close, will lay out how much big companies like Bell Canada can charge smaller Internet Service Providers for the use of their networks.

StylinRed

The CRTC's decision, announced Tuesday, gives established providers two options for charging independent internet service providers — a flat rate or a rate based on capacity and the number of users.

Bell had asked to be able to charge based on the total volume of internet data used by its wholesale customers. The regulator rejected that model.

The capacity rate model charges based on the speed of the service — meaning the small ISPs will be paying for the size of the pipe, not the amount of data that flows through the pipe. And it means small ISPs will have to pay more to provide faster internet to their customers.

The CRTC requires Bell and Rogers to allow the smaller companies to use their internet infrastructure and regulates the price which they can charge for it.

So shaw called me today. Thought they were gonna give me a warning since I exceeded my b/w limit but nope. They offered me a kickass deal. $30 a month for 1 year of broadband 50 and homephone. It's their 15/15/20 deal.

$15 Internet
$15 Homephone
$20 TV

Needless to say I'm getting upgraded this Thursday from my Extreme bundle.

I currently have broadband 50 with the tv and home phone bundle, but I'm paying $107 / month

Yeah I've seen on RFD that some others have been getting calls too. I was on a "Retention" type 12month plan with Shaw that ends in December so maybe that's why I got a call?

In fact the rep said not to worry about it being 12 months. After 12 months I could call back and re-negotiate too! So needless to say a guy is coming this Thursday with the new modem.

Spoke to Shaw, advised that I wanted to cancel and will be moving to Telus. They offered a bundle for $101 (regular shaw plan personalizer pricing) but this includes all HD channels (except oasis hd) and includes hbo and movie central. The price is fixed and won't increase after 6 months or 1 year.

I called sales and asked to cancel, they transferred me to cancellations/loyalty department. I asked to terminate all services as of dec 5 as I had signed up for Telus. They made an offer and said that I could think about it, and to call back and ask for loyalty department.

Just make sure that you are ready to cancel and state so clearly. Set a future date, you can always call back and cancel that request. I will probably take the $101 deal they offered me, sure it's not $50 cheap but its a $167 value (personal tv, all hd channels, hbo/movie central, personal phone, broadband 50) and it does not expire after one year like all other promos.

Bump.

Any new users with Teksavvy report what their service is like?

$55 for unlimited 25Mbps seems not bad considering all the rate increases lately.

Arghhh. Just noticed that Shaw lowered the bandwidth cap for High Speed 20 again. Has anyone actually been charged for going over the limit though? I've exceeded it a couple times by quite a bit (30GB+) but my monthly bills have all been normal.

You go over 3 times, then they send you a warning, if you still continue to go over, then your package gets bumped up.

shaw really needs to up those bandwidth caps especially with 4K video streaming coming in the Fall/Winter of this year and 3D/1080p streaming becoming more of a norm

thinking of switching to teksavvy but it'd be nice if they offered faster speeds :/

Apparently I've doubled my bandwidth for the past 4-6 months and they were gonna cancel my internet without a warning lol. Friend at shaw got me into the loyalty program and I got a free internet upgrade so I'm fine now.
