lol yea :x but if you saw me like 2 years ago (i weigh'd about 295 with ima say like 25-30% BF) now im at 270 with 20% BF lol and i guess =x but i was so hyped LOL i can do 135 easily while on smith machine tho...

small update (edited my previous post, same weight setup though).

this was with cold shoulders, just a super light warmup with the bar, then all the weight. Added 5 reps :fullofwin: going to screw over tomorrows workout because I'm pretty burnt now, oh well.

WEEK 5 - SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 11 TO SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 18

Challenge: DUMBELL GRIP (*with HALF of your body weight worth of weight, in EACH HAND). as long as you can hold them in seconds
rules: grab a pair of dumbells equaling your weight. stand, feet together, and hold them parallel at your sides for as long as you can.
do not hold them infront of you. do not rest them on your legs. do not use chalk. do not use straps.
time yourself with a wall clock, or with a friend, etc
why?: If you cant hold on to it, you cant do anything with it!


*eg. if you weigh 180lbs, you should be holding a 90lb dumbell in each hand.

Most gyms should have dumbells high enough for most of us (up to 100lbs). If your gym doesnt go quite high enough, you can try to put something together using barbells or something, or just use the highest weight you can.



Post up your results as follows or they wont be included in the results:

i havent tried. infact i dont really have any idea how long i could hold on to em for.

but i do know that regardless of how much anyone deadlifts or rows or whatever, all of those exercises last less like 15-20 seconds tops. its not about how strong your back or shoulders or legs or arms are. its 100% grip. 4 fingers and a thumb and nothing else. i promise by the time you think it should still be simple, that weight is going to be pealing your fingers open and you're going to be watching the clock and the seconds are going to be taking forever to go by.

No I've told the people at the gym about the weekly challenge. They help me get pumped up for it. I had a guy beside me doing it too but only lasted 1 min 20 @ 80lbs per hand.

I might try again but it's painful.

I've been off squats for almost 2 weeks due to two chronic knee problems. So that's very challenging. I don't think I can get one rep up nowadays. 170*2 = 340lbs. I know I can do 3 plates for 2.

Use a full range of motion from full extension to pulling the dumbell as high as you can.
Keep your body locked in position, do not jerk or swing or cheat the movement.
why?: A fantastic exercise for your back, shoulders, arms, and grip!

but the dumbbell was impossible to grip. Why the hell does SC have such wide gripped dumbbells? They'd be good for pushing exercises but IMO they SUCK for pulling exercises. So much extra strain its so hard on my wrists/forearm.

How the hell can you hold onto them? Yeah there's a spot on the dumbbell rack for 110lbs in the skinny section .. I find it so hard to control the fat grip ones, feels so unnatural. I got big hands too :okay:

rules: do as many wide grip pull ups as you can in a row without stopping.
do not use any cheating motion to help like kicking or swinging your legs.
must go to 95% or better extension.
why?: wide grip pull ups are a fantastic way to work your back and add width. secondary muscles used include shoulders and arms.

How wide would you say your hand have to be to qualify for this challenge. I'm not nit picking I'm just wondering what you guys consider wide grip. Wide grip would have your arms in a W shape at the top rather than an inverted M right?

That's sick. I just hit 10 during Monday's workout, but probably going to lay off of them for a bit. The last 2-3 reps put a lot of strain on my wrist, and hurts like fuck sometimes.

17 wide grip pullups @ 148lb

Lol, been gradually losing weight ever since school started (8lb lost). Prioritizing school over food for this semester. Losing strength as well :okay:

How wide would you say your hand have to be to qualify for this challenge. I'm not nit picking I'm just wondering what you guys consider wide grip. Wide grip would have your arms in a W shape at the top rather than an inverted M right?

Do you mean dips using two benches or between beams? They work the same but feel different. Between beams I did 25 deep (elbows to about 100-110 degrees), and I weigh 205lbs. Wasn't a tricep day though so if warmed up I could probably do more.

Zero warm-up. This was this morning on my leg day. Started to feel the burn at 25 reps. Pretty sure I could have done a lot more if I warmed up and consistently do dips in my workout routine but meh.

1 and a half times your body weight, high rep challenge???!!?!?! Focusing on form. Sloppiness + dead-lift is a really bad mix.
So if you're 180 you're DL'ing 270.

or maybe just bodyweight....

First challenge was pullups, any variation.

"Wednesday Oct. 26 to Nov. 2nd"

Challenge: CHIN UP'S reverse grip as many as you can in a row
rules: do as many Chin Up's as you can in a row without stopping.
do not use any cheating motion to help like kicking or swinging your legs.
must go to 95% or better extension.
why?: chin up's and pull ups are a fantastic way to work your upper back and arms. variations can hit everything from thickening your mid back to outer back to adding a width to your lats. shoulders and arms also come into heavy play. it is an even exercise because whether you are 135lbs and weak or 250lbs and strong, you're moving your own body weight doing a fundamental movement.

Post up your body weight, and number of years training along with your result for comparison too

Lame. Personally, I disagree and believe that once you have the form down you really can't screw it up when lifting below a certain weight. Just need to know your boundaries. If you lift too heavy then of course you'll be more likely to hurt yourself, because you will be sacrificing form for weight.

We are starting all the challenges over again as I feel that each major muscle group was well represented in the previous challenges. I'm not going to do a "curl in the squart rack" challenge or a handstand pushup challenge as those are covered with previous ones. This is a chance to see if you've improved over the past 2 months as well still promoting some competition. If anyone has a particular challenge they want to do throw some ideas out and we'll see what we can make work.

I tried them again lastnight and squeaked out 11, but on my last rep I was shaking more than Michael J Fox high on cocaine.

For a future challenge I propose standard width pushups or military press. No bullshit half reps, down til your chest/chin touches the floor.

Well we have the Overhead Press.... it's a little more compound than a seated military.

First weeks results are not a fair comparison as most people did pullups rather than chin ups. I see a drastic decrease in the amount of people posting up this week though. Good job everyone and thanks for participating lets see some more vids in the future!!!

I would agree as the heavier guys have way more to lift but with bodyweight... it's all relative in the end... or how the so called argument goes ;)

Today was supposed to be squat day but my back is still recovering from Tuesday's onslaught so I think I'll do it tomorrow. Might also post a pic up as I've lost weight recently :(

I was thinking of the military press that's like a pushup, I'm probably calling it by the wrong name. It's a like a half pushup half dip, on your knuckles, palms in. Gotta do it on a hard surface, see how tough you guys are ;)
