WEEK 11 - Thursday November 3rd - Thursday November 10th

Challenge: SQUATS (*with your body weight worth of weight, including the bar). as many as you can in a row


32 @ 170.

Then I thought it'd be smart to try to do chinups. It wasn't.

17 @ 170 chinups.

32 shit that's a nice number! I really hope I can do better than my last attempt at this. I feel stronger overall but lets see how the muscle endurance is now.

haha when you last saw me I was probably well over 200. Training almost every day for 2 years sure does help :)

Not lean enough - need to get down to 160 to compete in lightweight. It's so ridiculously hard. Fawk.

Challenge day Brah's. Had a rough ROUGH weekend but to sum it up, I'm not to optimistic today lol. Might have to give it a go and then try again on Thursday if I suck really bad. As before I'll be posting up a vid.

I'm not at the point in training where I can be answering "challenges" lol. I am in calorie restriction mode + I am fat :okay:

I can't imagine doing 20 squats at bodyweight right now

Alright, I finally tried the dip challenge. So what if it's 3 weeks late.
185 x 20, which was my goal.

Leg day tomorrow, i'll give the squat challenge a go. 15 is the goal.

WEEK 12 - SATURDAY MOVEMBER 12 TO SUNDAY MOVEMBER 20

Challenge: DUMBELL BENCH PRESS WITH HALF YOUR BODYWEIGHT IN EACH HAND as many as you can in a row
rules: do as many full PRESSES as you can in a row without stopping. do not stop for longer than you would in a regular set.
must go to your normal depth
why?: CHEST brah! Fantastic upper body lift using chest, shoulders, arms.

eg. If you weight 200lbs you would have a 100lb dumbell in each hand.

Post up your body weight, along with your result for comparison too like follows:

I stopped doing flat barbell bench because of my shoulders (peaked @ 3 plates :() so for this one i'm probs going to do 85 lb dumbbells instead.
Personally I think a body-weight dumbbell challenge would be WAYYY more difficult.

DB press challenge.

Splmash 13 @ 175lbs (used 90s)

Previously thought it was 14 but apparently my spotter helped a bit on the last one, so 13. Will try again tomorrow during chest day. I did it today after squats, didn't warm up much.

EDIT: I found 2 brand new body building.com tee and 2 lb of ON whey protein that can go out to future winners, I don't take supplements anymore. granted if prizes are involved, a video submission is necessary and Halo can't participate =]

This ones going to be ugly. Can we cheat and go to the closest weight under our body weight. With me that would be 90's as I weigh 185 rather then 95's(190) as I probably won't get past 2 :p

The ones lower were 97lb (most gyms label 100's wrong because they count the plates on the DB's but don't take the bar into consideration)

Couldn't find a decent place for video so no vid for this one. I "may" try again and get a buddy to video it later in the week.

^ I don't know, my warm up for the set of 11 was pretty weak (50lbs x 12) then (75lbs x 6)
Maybe my chest/tris weren't "activated" yet. I also saw my ex @ the gym, so maybe that activated some inner beastmode :haha:

Yeah i think thats normal too. What i like to think is that you can bench 2.5x more than you dumbbell press in working sets. Works about to be pretty accurate to me :P

Wasn't really feeling it today, I haven't been feeling 100% at all lately but went for it anyway.

100x8, I was expecting 10 or so :(

You have to start somewhere. I'd say find the weight you can comfortably do 10 reps of and concentrate hard on your form. Flex and squeeze your chest through the entire rep and hold at the top for a full "one-onethousand". Arms down square to 90 degrees so you're feeling the stretch at the bottom end of the rep. If you do weight that's comfortable for you and focus on your form I guarantee you will see increased strength in as little as 3 weeks. Once you've got the basics down you can start to push and see what you can really press without the risk of hurting yourself.

EDIT - And that goes for any exercise on any muscle. Do your research, watch YouTube videos of proper technique before you try something new. I can't count how many guys I see rocking their bodies on the seated row machine, yanking back with their upper body with weight that's way too much for them, and pulling the cable barely half way to their abdomen and thinking they're strong. I'm waiting for someone's lower back to explode. By doing exercises totally wrong you're only cheating yourself while looking like an idiot in the process.

The idea if you can't do 1 rep at the specified weight is to find the highest weight you can do 5 reps at :)

Berz puts it on the ground. I put mine on the DB rack.

I have a video but it was only 10 reps with the 90s. Not too proud of it. Will try again tomorrow.

I can probably hit 16 or 17 if I had adequate rest. The spotter didn't help at all, even though his hands are touching my arm. I have a really bad shoulder and it was just precaution. I should've went a little lower, but shoulder is again limited.

I know! I never noticed that habit until today. I never used to do that, and I'll have to be conscious about it from now on. Form is important to me and I would rather go down in weight than do a bad rep. Thanks for the heads up.

Oh and I hate how my legs look so pinner from that angle. And jiggly. :heckno:

Another tip would to not drag the weight across your body, looks as though your pulling them up with your shoulders. Although it may not hurt or anything now; it'll effect your shoulders in the long run. Kick the weights up from your knee and roll back. And keep your head on the bench.

Thanks for the tip. Anything under 100 I tend to get the weight up like that. For 100lb DBs and above, I swing my legs back to get it up. I'll keep it in mind though.

People probably know this already, but a friend showed me good way to get the db's up for flat bench. I find kicking the weights up with my knees doesn't work for me above 80lbs.

Put the weight on your knees and then keep your arms straight/even and tighten your core and bring your whole body back in one motion and your db's will be in the air above you. Reverse the motion for the putting the weights back down.

I go elbows to 90 degrees. When warming up with like 40's I'll stretch out by coming down until the weight actually touches my chest and hold it for 15 seconds between reps.

Wish I could participate in these types of challenges but I have tendonitis in my fingers, and if I grip something for a long period of time, they feel all fucked up and my workout in general will then suffer. I never go over 8 reps with deadlifts. :okay:

I tried again today. I'll post vid when I get home. I can STILL feel my forearms from the last time lol. No idea on time I had my eyes closed and tried to zone out. I know I was in pain a lot sooner and a lot longer than last time though lol. If Splmash did anything over 2 mins I think he's going to get the win. If I bettered my time I'll call that a personal success haha.

SEATED MILITARY PRESS with half your bodyweight as many as you can

We all know how to do this, I expect some big numbers out of a few of us. Only stipulation I'm going to put is that it must be in front of the face not behind the neck. The bar I use for this has a bend in it so I can put my arms directly beside my head and bar passes behind it. If you have this bar feel free to use it as well. Arms must go at least parallel with the floor to count as a rep.

I was trying to decide if we should go .75% bodyweight but 1. were all monkeys and not good at math and 2. I figure some high reps wouldn't be to fun to do so fuck it. Enjoy the pain assholes! :fuckthatshit:

Yes my gym has the olympic size (45lbs) and then shorter ones that are about 2-3 ft long. Straight and one with bends.

I don't have the bar that will go around my head so will have to do this one with dumbells

Shoulders get worked with everything you do whether it be chest or back. Add some basic raises and they seem to be doing just fine. The doc says I may never be able to do heavy lifting over my head ever again.

i find dumbbells to be easier since id only be doing 35s in that case (rounding down @ 148lbs) in comparison to 75lb barbell or maybe ill just try both lol

If you have a short chair that you can slightly arch your back and get your head out of the way so it's easier. DB's won't be a fair comparison I don't think just like with Bench it's one or the other. Hmm might have to change this one up a bit if not enough people wanna do it.

I guess DB's half bodyweight divided by 2 so for me it would be a 50lbs per hand?

The further down you go, the more muscle you are exerting, and you are also engaging more of that muscle (hope I worded it in a way that everyone understands, haha). I personally like a little lower weight and go through the full range of motion, but it depends on what your goals are (this is the same for any exercise). If you want size, higher weight at parallel is fine.

Thats why I do 4 different shoulder pushing exercises a week split into 2 days (monday, friday).

day 1
Regular dumbell seated presses to bars thru the ears depth. Higher weight 6-8 rep range
Standing strict barbell military presses to bar to chin depth. Lower weight 8ish reps

day 2
Arnold dumbell seated presses with arms lowered fully and rotated to the front. Lower weight 8-10 rep range
Standing barbell military presses with a half push press on the last couple reps. Higher weight. 4-6 reps

lower weight and deeper higher reps seems to build more shoulders. higher weight builds strength, which inturn, allows me to lift more weight for the lower weight exercises.

Did it with both the 100lb barbell and 50lb dumbbells back to back, no spotter.

Barbell: 19.5 reps @ 200lbs (I failed 3/4 of the way on the up half of the rep)
Dumbbells: 23 reps @ 200lbs

Dumbbells was a more natural push for me, never done a free bar military press before. Felt weird.

Yeah, I know. I didn't go through the entire thread but figured the usual squat, DL, bench, curls of some sort were already done and this would be different.

Maybe cleans then? Cleans are probably more common, especially if there are any past rugby football players here.
