Every week I will post a new challenge for you bros. The idea is to give everyone something a little different to try and post up about. Most things will be simple variations on things you already do, with some way to level the playing field between the big and small guys at the same time.

It will be entirely for fun and bragging rights.

I will post the challenge Sunday evening, and it will run until the following Sunday evening when I will post the next one.




SUNDAY AUGUST 14 TO SUNDAY AUGUST 21

Challenge: PULL UPS (any variety). as many as you can in a row
rules: do as many pull ups as you can in a row without stopping.
over hand, underhand, wide grip, neutral grip, whatever.
do not use any cheating motion to help like kicking or swinging your legs.
must go to 95% or better extension.
why?: pull ups are a fantastic way to work your upper back. variations can hit everything from thickening your mid back to outer back to adding a width to your lats. shoulders and arms also come into heavy play. it is an even exercise because whether you are 135lbs and weak or 250lbs and strong, you're moving your own body weight doing a fundamental movement.

Post up your body weight, and number of years training along with your result for comparison too


this is strictly for fun, so use your own honor and dont cheat.

Stuck. Will do the challenge on Bicep day. Doubt I can do more than 10 though haha ;) I'll be doing close grip underhand. Mostly biceps as my back is weaksauce when it comes to pullups.

Ill try and take this challenge for the under 150 small guys :fullofwin:

Currently weighing 151lb, will do wide grip pullups and see how many I do for tomorrow's workout.
Bonus points for muscle ups? :fullofwin:

Yes my first muscle up was in December, and I worked my way up to 6-7 in a row lol

12 pull-ups overhand shoulder width apart..
165 lbs, wrestling and rugby in high school, "training" on and off for ~4 years.

I put quotations because I like to try different unorthodox programs. My peak was 18 pull-ups after p90x. Now I'm trying out different specifics from Tim Ferriss' 4-Hour Body, so I've been bulking for the past month or so.

will get started on this challenge after wed. im gonna say i can push out 10 reps super wide grip. probably 15ish if i use about a little more than shoulder width

damnit halo! im tired of your bragging! jk if I could lift as much as you id tell the world.
15 wide grips, then 12, then 8, then a few sets of 6..they should be considered weighted pullups since im carrying like 10 lbs of fat...lol
5'6, 177 lbs, been @ the gym 2.5 years, been lifting properly for about a year and a bit. (used to be 135)
not to go off topic, but is there a certain way to do muscle ups, or is it one of those "practice makes perfect" type of things

I've always thought about using the assited pullup machine and setting the weight high so that it propells me upwards (it would be loud as he'll tho). im capable of doing clap pullups & stupid amounts of dips, but its the whole "wrist motion" that I can't do.

Never found the wrist motion as a big factor to the muscle up, because you should naturally be able to pull yourself up to the dip.
IMO, it's a combination of back and arm strength.
Lots and lots of weighted pullups (high weight, low reps) did it for me.

yep when i was 280 heavy weight was a breeze then i do high rep shit and im fucking dead

I agree with RRxtar. I generally only do 5-8 reps when doing weighted pullups. Body weight to failure was actually a challenge lol

probably has to do with the fact that you are gaining weight overall when doing lower reps... ie, increasing your bodyfat%. Unless you are doing cardio on the side, you aren't getting your HR up for any extended period of time with strength phases.

i never really go for reps and always maintain the same weight.. but even when i train 5-6 rep max, I can still do roughly the same amount of reps with body weight exercises...

haha i thought i was the only one that did lower rep weighted pullups. after you take the dip belt off, u feel like superman and u can pump out regular pullups like it aint shit.

Started my back day with fiddy super wide grips (12,12,7,8,6,6)
Did another 30 @ the end (12,10,8) of wide grip + 2 sets of 10 neutral grip.
A hundred in total, but I remember reading in my Ahhhhhnold book that it's muuch better to do a hundred of one type of pullup as opposed to 50 wide & 50 close.

yeah...a few times...my super wide grip max is 15, any more than that and I get sloppy and start using my bodys momentum

this would be overall since its body weight its fair game. whether you're 135lbs and skinny or 280lbs and ripped, 20 pull ups is a challenge!

12 reps @ 155lbs wide grip, fml lol

since everyone weigh differently, and doing different weight levels, everything should be calculated relatively

ex. halo

14 reps at 240lbs + 45lbs

(240+45)/240 = 1.19 multiplier x 14 reps = 16.63 reps at body weight

works for just about all exerises, hope my math is correct

Challenge: SQUATS (*with your body weight worth of weight, including the bar). as many as you can in a row
rules: do as many full squats as you can in a row without stopping. do not stop for longer than you would in a regular set.
must go to beyond parallel or deeper (ATG).
why?: The squat is the king of all exercises!

i have never tried to squat more that 20 reps with weights before.. I have done up to 50 with body weight but that is different.

the idea is to do something different, on an even playing field, that everyone from vets to noobs can do. stop complaining and just do it. its one set out of your weekly routine. do it on your last set. if you can squat 300, squatting 150 should be no sweat! so power out 15 and have some fun. your body likes the shocking change too ;)

tried the squat challenge today. I'm 173....didn't warm up, went straight to 175 and did 15 slow controlled reps. Positive I could have done way more had I done a few warm up reps @ 135, but I was worried about tiring myself out. I'll try again in a few days

Haha My 1 RM is shit, only 405.
One thing I do is deadlift once a week, every week. I also go to the gym only once a week. I make my way to the platform, crap out a bunch load of deadlifts, squats, or cleans then crawl my ass back to the car.
I'll make a video in time, no problem.

Back on topic, who else did the challenge?
Remember to keep your neck contracted and shoulders tight, as if you were to hold a pencil between the scapulas. Also, try to keep the abs tight and pushed out aswell.

Weighed myself and I gained 2lb (153), so I rounded it up to 155lb (plate + 10)

Last 6 or 7 was not as deep, but it was definitely passed parallel.

So..

Fcukedd for 42 @ 155lb or
Fcukedd for 36 @ 155lb

Better than I thought :D

Also hope you guys do a deadlift week. A couple months ago I was able to get 100 consecutive deadlifts of 225 lbs (I weigh about 180)

im trying to come up with a formula where we can even the playing field for low rep, high weight things. like weight x reps / bodyweight type thing. to come up with a better number for comparisons. but the white chicks thread is more entertaining atm.


ive got challenges for the next 2 weeks, after that we can come up with some different things. try to keep the chatter about that down for now to not distract from the current one tho.

Fuck Hal0 wins this one! haha On a side note I tried the squat challenge again today and got 26. After the first my rep my legs were screaming "TO SOON JUNIOR" but I had someone else there counting so I couldn't pussy out haha.

Since my max is only 230lbs for bench I don't anticipate me getting more than 7 reps @ 200lbs.

What did you guys do to warm up for your squat attempts?

I lifted 185 for mine. so i did 10x135lbs, 6x185lbs, 6x225lbs, which is my usual warm up anyway. then did my challenge set. doing the 225lbs got the legs fired up and ready to go and made the 185 feel light as a feather

Not me I did the opposite. I did 1 set of bar only for 20 reps. 115 for 20 reps, then 1 set of 165 for 12 reps. Then some standing high knee jumps for 10 then did my bodyweight set. Just wanted to get the blood flowing to the legs without really tiring them out with any kind of actual weight.

because depending how long your limbs are, going all the way down to your chest puts an insane amont of stress on your shoulder/rotator cuffs.. Most asians can get away with it because they are sub 5'9

next time you're watching people bench press, watch where the elbows of a guy with long arms end up vs a guy with short arms. a guy with short arms can touch the bar to his chest with his upper arms nearly parallel with the floor, a guy with long arms would have to bring his elbows much farther down to do the same.

I don't see why it is a disadvantage if you were bigger... it is proportionate to your size and stature... If you want to get technical, the only real accurate way to make it fair is weight and body fat % so at least you know how much of your weight is active muscle tissue.. but we can't.. so this is the next best thing.. if you are fat and weak.. suck it up

we can come up with all kinds of different formulas and reasons why things arent fair to some people but the truth is, basing the challenges on bodyweight is as close to fair as i can think of. it is a direct representation of your strength vs your body. and the idea is to keep it simple and fun. you dont win an award for doing the best that week.

...feeling very "evened out" right meow, not sure if that's good or bad.

I say anything above 250 is deecent, above 400 is advanced. When I first started @ the gym I was 135, within 2 months I was benching my bodyweight doing 5 sets of 5, hitting chest twice a week. I've always had so much strength benching, but I don't even have a chest to show for it :fuuuuu:

if I did this challenge a year ago it would have been waayyy higher. I had an epiphany a year into my training and realized "fuck benchpress!" moar squat, moar deadlift, moar pullup

I quit 5x5last week btw, just to get my shoulder healing and even out my body. gonna get back into it when school starts. I'm kinda in cutting-mode, eating lott cleaner than when i was doing 5x5.

Challenge: STANDING MILITARY PRESS (*with HALF of your body weight worth of weight, including the bar). as many as you can in a row
rules: do as many full strict form presses as you can in a row without stopping. do not stop for longer than you would in a regular set.
feet either together or shoulder width apart.
must go to below your chin or lower
DO NOT bounce with your legs (push press)
why?: Fantastic compound shoulder workout using shoulders, arms, as well as upper body and core.

*eg. if you weigh 180lbs, you should be shoulder pressing 90lbs including the bar.

crappy workout on my last split day, but so far



update as of 9/8/2011:

dhillon09 13@110lbs

(45 lb bar, 25+5+2.5/side + whatever the shitty clip things weigh)

I snatched it off the ground for the first rep, so if you don't wanna count that, it was 7 reps. This was at the end of my set, will go back and try again.

Goal is to be doing 200+lbs (ideally, 2 plates... man .. i get a hardon at the thought of mil-pressing 225lbs).

18 for 240 is preetty good to me :)

Anyhow, busted a 85 for 3 reps, not going any higher, try 60lbs another day
