NHL 13 already sounds like its skating in the right direction with the new True Performance Skating system and EA Sports IQ, but if the series wants to be in the sports game of the year conversation one of the areas needing a major overhaul is the Be A GM mode. We sat down with producer Andy Agostini to discuss the new connected franchise mode and how EA Canada plans on making the general manager AI perform more like Red Wings mastermind Ken Holland and less like former New York Islanders trainwreck/current TV commentator Mike Milbury.

Here's what we know so far about NHL 13 revamped GM mode.

GM Connected

1. EA retooled its most popular mode to include a multi-user dynasty with up to 30 NHL teams being run by 30 human general managers.

2. This new GM Connected mode features a full 82-game schedule and can run for up to 25 years.

3. EA chose against including fantasy draft because it didn't want the barrier of entry to be a tedious 45-round draft. If you want to mix up the teams so no one is forced to play with the Edmonton Oilers (zing!) you can randomize the rosters when starting the league.

4. Users can play GM Connected in several ways, including a solo league against the CPU AI, standard versus, co-op, six-on-six online team play, taking the role of a general manager, or as a coach who handles line changes and team strategy.

5. Connected GM is elastic, meaning one team could be controlled by a GM, while another is run by a hands-on player, and another is run by a coach.

6. In six-on-six online team play leagues, you can have up to 25 users per each team. This allows teams to have a ringer take the role of a regular when they're short a body.

7. Free agency includes both unrestricted and restricted free agents, and it's handled via seven bidding periods. The highest bidders win the services of the player, and if you strike out you have several more rounds to find an adequate replacement.

8. Much to the dismay of hardcore franchise guys, the NHL Entry Draft is automated. You can still scout players during the season and build a priority list of prospects. Once the draft starts, however, the CPU will use your priority list to make selections for your team.

9. While running your team you have full access to the entire list of players in the organization, including the AHL, CHL, and foreign league prospects.

10. The commissioner controls how quickly the league advances. You can opt for either three-day, one-week, or two-week periods.

11. A news panel in the menu screen keeps you abreast of all league happenings.

12. An integrated messaging system informs you of waivers, trades, and league join requests. You can also send messages to the commissioner, the entire league, or team members.

13. EA built in systems to deal with grieving and cheating. The commissioner has the power to kick out users at any time.

14. If a commissioner goes missing, other general managers can vote him out to keep the league moving along.

15. EA plans to release a mobile app that allows players to stay engaged with their leagues when they're away from their consoles. From the app, players can juggle team rosters, scour the waiver wire, propose trades, and read about league happenings.

16. If you want to keep your GM experience offline, you still have that option. Doing so will allow you to make your draft selections like in past NHL games.

GM BRAIN

17. NHL 12 received a lot of criticism for its poor GM AI. Teams would stash veterans in the minors, propose ridiculous trades, and let top prospects leak into free agency. This year EA is completely rebuilding the system.

18. With the GM Brain AI working as the backbone for all decisions, general managers now look at their teams just like their real-world counterparts, evaluating the current and future talent and making decisions based on what will make their teams better now and a few years down the road.

19. The GM Brain now catalogs players based on where they fit into the entire NHL, not just how they fit on their team. This means that while the Wild may play Devin Setoguchi on the first line because the offensively challenged team is short on scoring talent, the GM recognizes that in reality he's more of a second line player. This places all the players on a roster in a pecking order and help inform the GM of the team weaknesses and surpluses.

20. Because teams know what they have on their roster relative to the rest of the league, they are smarter about making free agency signings. Last year when a team needed a fifth goalie to be a backup in the minors, it would sign an NHL-level talent to a one-way contract and then immediately try to squeeze him through waivers. This year teams will sign a player of the appropriate skill level if all they need is a body for their AHL affiliate.

21. When deciding what moves his team should make for the upcoming season, first the GM Brain determines if his team is a championship-level team, a contender, a hopeful, or in rebuilding mode. This evaluation helps set the types of trades a team is willing to engage. If a team is on the cusp of a championship, it may trade off some prospects to get a veteran who fills a weakness. If a team is in full rebuilding mode, it will be much more likely to trade off players at the tail end of their prime in exchange for prospects or draft picks.

22. In NHL 12 players were primarily valued by three traits: offense, defense, and athleticism. After talking with the NHL's central scouting service about how it operates, EA has changed this in NHL 13. Now GMs evaluate key six areas: shooting, skating, puck skills, physicality, hockey sense, and defense.

23. Once a team proposes a trade deal, a few days will have to pass before they will rescind the offer. This should allow you to come back to deals instead of being forced to take them immediately when they are proposed before the GM AI changed its mind and rescinded the offer.

24. EA has reworked all the feedback a user receives when trying to make a trade. Now teams give you a better sense of what they are looking for and how far off your proposal is.

25. GM Brains also have the ability to project their rosters up to five years out. This helps them determine what talent is coming up so it knows when it's smart to either trade a veteran during the deadline to make or let him leave via free agency to make room for a prospect.

26. Though some outlets (including us) criticized NHL 12 for having too many players rated 80 and above, EA is content with its current ratings system and believes that by surfacing the six player traits instead of three it will be easier for players and AI GMs to better understand a player's true value.

27. When making draft picks, GM Brains will draft the best players available until it gets into the later rounds. Then it will start addressing positions of need.

28. The trade engine is now much more granular than it was in the past. If you want to tell teams you are looking for a first-line forward between the ages of 27 and 30, you can do that. The GM Brains also have a much better idea of what players they are willing to trade.

29. In past NHL games, when a player went down the AI would make wholesale line changes instead of just plugging a scratched player into the hole. Now the AI is smart enough to make individual moves without completely revamping the entire lineup. It will also make player valuations to determine the best fit when a player goes down. A right winger may switch to center if the next center in the minor league is significantly worse.

30. The AI is also smarter about using enforcers. In previous games their high strength ratings made them likely candidates to be automatically placed on the penalty kill. Know the AI knows that these players are specialists and will play them on (and keep them off) appropriate lines.

I'm really looking forward to this. I was telling myself that if it was anything like NHL 12, I was going to pass on it next year but this new skating engine, hockey IQ and how they drastically improved the goalie animations will be interesting. I just want to know how this will factor in for the figure skaters and glitchers. I really hope this nerfs them so we can get real games in not this figure skating/cherry picking/glitching/exploiting fest that we currently have now.

Here's a question about the true performance skating. They talk about how momentum plays a big factor and makes it more realistic. This means no more figure skating crap and all right?

But can you still go full speed down the boards and they suddenly boardplay yourself? Because if so, that's all out the window.

It doesn't mean no figure skating; it means you sacrifice speed for agility and vice versa. Also, attributes played a bigger factor in the new skating engine than before (although that may be tweaked before launch). I'm not sure how it'll play out in EASHL, but it definitely plays and feels different compared to NHL 12. It took most of us 3-5 games before we really got the hang of the new skating engine.

Not sure on the boardplay thing. None of us (Community Day attendees) were cheesers ... They should've invited some Qc players :pokerface: The devs were pretty adamant about removing cheesy tactics.

Well then....PASS on this game (for the 5th straight year...). EA can spend all this money refining the game mechanics, but they cant spend any more on commentators other than a guy who does colour for the Flyers (acceptable for me), and a guy who hasnt done ANY commentating for the NHL since BEFORE the lockout (that fact drives me up the fucking wall).

I know I am nitpicking, but bad commentary just kills the overall feel of the game, despite the game mechanics being awesome.

Oh no, I borrow them or buy them when they get outdated (ie. cheap), but it's like nails to a chalkboard when I play the game. It was fine until 09 came out, and then you find the commentary alone takes away from the game a bit. I'd knock the dust off my Gamecube copy of NHL 06 before I'd buy a Gary Thorne-commentated NHL game at full price.

Regional Matchmaking:

In NHL 13 we have revamped some of our matchmaking parameters to help find closer matches in skill and location. When creating a club or while in the GM Settings screen, the user has the option to set their Club Region to best suit their current location. We will also show you which region is recommended by pinging all three of our game host centers to determine which is closest to you by the response times received. Since we now only match within the region you’ve selected, we increased the search timers to a maximum of 4 minutes to help find a closer skilled team with a similar number of players within your region. We do have the ability to adjust some of these depending on community response from different regions.

6-Player Leaderboards:

One of the most requested EASHL features on the EA forums has made it into NHL 13. We now track 6-player club games on their own leaderboards alongside the other leaderboards that are currently in-game. Not only will everyone know who the top 6-player club is during the season, but we will also be giving out in game awards to the top 6-player club and the clubs that finish within the top 10 and top 100 respectively. To qualify for the 6-player club leaderboards you must start and finish the game with 6 players on your team. The team you match up with does not have to have 6 players, however if you attempt to drop players when losing, you will still be ranked on the 6-player leaderboard with the loss.

Performance Points Multiplier:

To encourage teams to play with more human players, we have adjusted the performance points multiplier to be determined by the number of human players on your team. A two player team will always receive a multiplier of one, whereas a 6-player team would receive an approximate multiplier of 1.6. For example, if a team had 25 performance points, and was playing with 6 players, their total performance points would be 40. The multiplier value can be tuned server side if the community finds that it is becoming too unbalanced.

Club Captains:

In NHL 13, you will be able to assign captains and alternate captains to players in your club. Club GMs will have the ability to assign one captain and up to two alternates, or no captain and up to three alternates from the Club Roster screen. Captains and alternates will display C’s and A’s respectively in gameplay, however goalies will not have a C or A on their jerseys.

Club Matchmaking Settings Saved to Server:

Regular Season and Playoff Captain’s Options settings can now be saved in the GM Settings screen and will be automatically loaded when you enter the Club Dressing room. Players are still able to modify the search options from within the dressing room; however, they will only be saved from the GM Settings screen.



Club Join Request changes:

The naming of Public and Private club options have been changed slightly to better include the addition of the GM Friends option. Public/Private club is now called “Auto Join Club” [Yes/No] but it also has an option to only allow GM Friends to be able to auto join. A similar option exists in the “Accepting Join Requests” option where you can set it to GM Friends Only to only allow join request from friends.

Back-out Penalty:

Over the years we have read posts about teams cherry picking their opponents, and ducking teams when they are not the home team. Users have mentioned that nothing is more frustrating than winning an Elite Championship the month before and having half the teams quit out on you once they realize this in game.

We feel that with the matchmaking improvements we have done, there should be no reason to back-out on your opponents in NHL 13. The back-out penalty is intended to punish the quitting team whether they quit from the Side Select or prior to the one minute mark in game. Anything after the one minute mark of game is tracked as a Did Not Finish (DNF) Loss so there is no need for additional punishment.

Consecutive back-outs are able to stack, and the punishment results in a deduction of rank points upon the next completed regular season game if it results in a win. DNF losses post 1 min mark, and Playoff games will carry any back-out penalties to the next game. Side Select and Pre-Game back-outs can be weighted differently and we can choose to implement a grace number of back-outs before the penalty would apply. Penalty amounts per back-out, Max penalty amount, and free back-out amounts can all be adjusted server side per back-out type.

I think the match making is great, I really hated playing away against some teams.

My preference was HUT -> EASHL -> VS

The thing I hate about offline game modes is that the AI is so god damn easy to exploit lol. Drop-in is fun when you're playing with buddies, besides that it's pretty boring.. good for people who aren't in competitive nature.

I like this back out penalty. Too many pussy teams backing out. We won the elite championship last month. The next day when teams saw our banner, they immediately started quitting. Finally this home team advantage will be a thing of the past as well. So frustrating having teams back out at the matchup screen only to matchup with them again and they have home this time, they don't back out then.

Who actually plays HUT? I always hated training, anyways. Made the game way more complicated than it should be. They should get rid of contracts, career, injuries, chemistry, etc. Just keep it simple ... Buy cards, build team, play games. If you want something more in-depth, play GM Connected/Be a GM.

How it should be:
HUT = Simple team builder/cash grab (Casual fans)
BaGM/GMC = Complex team builder (Hardcore fans)

All the overalls in the game, for the most part, will be lower. They've overhauled how overalls are calculated (no longer calculated based on player type, thank god). They increased the range of "NHL calibre" attributes, so now an 80 is a good score in an attribute where last year an 80 was meh (everyone had 80s in almost everything) and they increased what the attributes mean (i.e. 80 shot accuracy is less accurate relative to a 90 shot accuracy this year than it was last year).

I do and HUT is one of my favourite modes in the game (until I got 1st on leader boards and got bored), I really don't see how complicated it is for you to train and contract up a player.. Players rarely get injured and chemistry doesn't mean anything in this mode or in other modes. If HUT mode was that simple like you said, there wouldn't be any challenge and no one would play.

I like how sticks are more active in poke checking and actually trying to intercept passes! Plus I noticed that there's a new chopping on the puck feature when you are chasing the puck down low

If you watch at 8:40, Elias is going full speed then does TWO backwards skating moves.

1) no one would do that in the slot

2) it's waaaaay too fluid and has way too much puck control especially given he was going top speed. It's as if the new skating engine doesn't play to backwards skating.

This is why I always thought that a new skating engine isn't enough, there needs to be a new puck control engine. If anything, I think a new puck control engine is more important because with the puck on a string, it's ridiculous what impossible things people can do online.

Hopefully NHL 14 will fix it!

which would those be? People on forums were talking about the toe drag wrister not working anymore, in fact, it resulted in a turn over pretty much every time.

I'm off work in 15 mins and will be downloading the demo when I get home. From viewing forums, people are impressed with the AI. The versus AI has always been good, I really hope they're the same quality AI for EASHL. My team plays 6's as much as we can but if there's one person missing, it usually a D man, people have said that the D men will clog the lanes for passes and get in your face if you try to skate in and shoot at an angle. A glitch/exploit free game would be great. They just patched up that backwards skating goal that someone found this morning :thumbsup:

I'm calling it now. The backwards skating is going to be the new exploit. It's way too fluid and too much control.

If you watch at 8:40, Elias is going full speed then does TWO backwards skating moves.

1) no one would do that in the slot

2) it's waaaaay too fluid and has way too much puck control especially given he was going top speed. It's as if the new skating engine doesn't play to backwards skating.

This is why I always thought that a new skating engine isn't enough, there needs to be a new puck control engine. If anything, I think a new puck control engine is more important because with the puck on a string, it's ridiculous what impossible things people can do online.

Hopefully NHL 14 will fix it! Johnny Superb had a much easier time scoring in that than he did on me at Community Day haha Shutout! :fullofwin:

That is what happened to me as well. He got my two games NHL 12 & PSVita UMvC3 and gave me a store credit card and a pre-order receipt. He said you have to bring everything in order to get the game. Better not have to pay the difference..

I just called in to the store to make sure I wont have to pay the difference and the worker confirmed it. Basically its a 2 part process. They take the games from u and convert it into credit and give u the gift card. Then u bring it back in tmr and just pick up the game instead of having to do both at once.

I wanted to do it early in case they decide to take NHL12 off the list..

i did it at lansdowne. had a chat with the CSR about it. they dont normally do this, but he said they didnt get enough people pre-ordering the game, so that's why they're allowing it. essentially the trade-ins done tonight are a PRE-ORDER of the game. you are now guaranteed a copy of the game for the first week, because they hold on to pre-ordered copies for a week.

the qualifying list is NORMALLY updated every friday, but FS has been known to update the list mid-week, and they can do so at anytime. they actually just did it 2 weeks ago for Max Payne 3.

Futureshop is doing a trade 2 and you get NHL 13 collector's for FREE and NHL 12 is on the list, surprisingly. So go find another cheap game from that list and you can get NHL13 for free

I made the 2 for 1 deal today at Coquitlam FS (they still have lots of SC edition in-stock) The rep was shocked to see FS allowed NHL 12 to be a qualifying game. I added Arkham City and got the deal.

As for the pre-order from FS, I returned it once I got it in the mail ;)

I just picked up my game this morning but I'm stuck at work until tonight!
I will join for sure!... Personally I would prefer to have it set at 2 weeks (or at LEAST 1 week) because I'm really busy with work... most of you know what I do, hammering out 70 hours a week ... and 2 weeks isn't too too bad for the other members since they aren't forced to dedicate ALL their playing time to just this GM League ... they can play other modes for a bit :p ... that way us casual gamers can participate too?... although I'm pretty sure I can squeeze in 4 games a week... just that my playing hours are all wack ... it'll be like 1am games heh ...
