How is grouse shit westopher? the quicksilver park is money if its not icy
I think hes a park kinda guy and based on most peoples opinions for which local park is best,
seymour > cypress > grouse

Quik park is ok at best. Cut jump line is never open. They concentrate way more in rails and other than the top jump in the quik park they are all pretty mellow. I mean its still fun butit seems last year it was like half the year before anything was properly put together.

Rode grouse tonight. They got a good chunk of new snow. I even got a pow slash:fullofwin:
Looks like they could open quite a bit more soon. Gonna hit baker or whistler on sunday if it keeps dumping, maybe sledding if my friends with sleds are heading up. If not, I'll go hit seymour if they build a jump right of the bat. If not it's sliding rails at grouse again. Either way its some more riding.

My most recent PlanetBuff order for a Polar Buff was USPS first class international (slowest service) and it took ~2 weeks to get here, which is par for the course for snail mail.
Should get it week of Christmas if you chose that option.

I went opening day, last friday, and it was pretty awesome. The chair ride is definitely much better. There was barely a line up on opening day, being a weekday and all, so I'm not sure how the new quad will cope with the weekend lineups though.
They had a few features in the park and I think even more now that they had the 32 event saturday or sunday (cant rmb).
Low clouds/a bit of fog from 9:30am till maybe noon, I left around noon, but after that it looked amazing (based on pictures), it was clear blue skies.
Unfortunately I won't be able to hit up any locals till January, but if anyone is up at whistler from the 15th to 17th, pm me and we can shred some.
anyone have experience with the underarmour balaclavas?
Yeah they're pretty good. Gets stuffy when the air is humid though.
So yesterday was my first time snowboarding. I went to Cypress did the bunny hill 3 times, than the Circle hill right after and then back to the bunny hill. Going to the Circle hill right away was a bad idea for me. I bailed out so many times and I was not use to the steeper slope.
Any ways I think I got the hang of back side riding, just need to learn how to use my front side. Once I can easily ride comfortably with backside and front side I think I will attempt a non beginner slope again lol.
Some things I learned as a beginner if anyone is thinking of trying snowboarding for the first time is:
Need to buy a helmet and maybe wrist guards.
Learn how to properly get off a ski left so you wont bail hard trying to get off.. lol
All in all it was a fun experience for myself and I hope to continue learning how to snowboard.
Thanks for reading
:nyan:
P.S. Does anyone recommend a better mountain to start off with, or was Cypress good enough to learn. I was thinking of sticking with grouse because it is the shortest drive.

You might be able to park underground in one of the individually owned suite/condo places. Just talk to the people at the desk, they might charge you for parking for the night, don't necessarily tell them you are camping out though. I did that for one night before, slept in the car and used hotel lobby as a "living room."

Welcome to the club, man! Stay for a while, you just might like it here!
In terms of equipment, helmets are a major point of contention. I personally wear one, but research shows helmets become almost a moot point when involved in collisions at speeds higher than 15mph. It's great for preventing bumps and bruises, or at worst a concussion, but don't expect to fly at a tree and survive the impact. Your best safety equipment are your eyes and your brain.
You won't need a wrist guard. Learn to fall on your forearms, tuck them to your chest and let your whole body take the impact. NEVER stick out your arms to catch yourself unless you want to dislocate your shoulder. Believe me, the wait at the ER will hurt (if you don't freeze to death waiting for your buddy to get Ski Patrol).
The one thing you have to accept about snowboarding is that you WILL fall. Dozens of times in a season. Sometimes it's a soft landing, sometimes it's a back breaking scorpion. Don't be afraid of falling. Riding off the lift only comes with experience. The more you ride off the lift, the more you learn to look where you want to go, where to place your back foot, how to maintain balance. If you do fall under the lift, keep that head down, unless you want the chair to swing around and hit your head.
Just keep riding man. Lots of things to learn and pick up, just make sure you keep it fun. If you're constantly worried about falling, you're stressing out too much, and you're not having fun. Just let it flow. If you don't push yourself to the point of bailing, you're not progressing.

I have to respectfully disagree good sir. I can not believe this at all, from both experience and the many sports requiring helmets.
I can tell you I've crashed going more than 15mph and I think I'd be a little brain dead if it weren't for my trusty brain bucket.

Same here, caught an edge while mellowing out and not paying attention, head impacts ice at high speed and my Smith Maze took a massive dent and had my ears ringing for a good 30s before I realized that I survived a possible head injury. The helmet was unusable after, but $90 vs a lifetime of headaches is a worthy investment.
My point was that helmets are not the be-all-end-all of head injuries. If you ride well beyond your abilities or your ability to navigate the mountain safely, don't respect the Alpine Code, you can be in a hamster ball and you will still get hurt.
I know what you're saying. I'm a helmet user too. it's just, if you just read around the various snowboarding forums out there, there are anti-helmet hardliners that use the 15mph impact rating as one of many reasons helmets don't work. The other primary excuse is that they're adults and they have free will to make the decision NOT to wear helmets. It's a fair, but pretty ridiculous argument.

I know these are a bit more expensive, but try Prior Snowboards - they are a local ski/board company based out of Whistler... lots of good reviews and very good rep! They've got a specials section for demo or last year's models and they do fairly wide and long boards.

Remember, you are gonna have to spend like 80 bucks for lift tickets, its worth it to spend an extra hundred and get a good board. Good equipment honestly makes a huge difference in how long you can make your days last. I just sold a set of good bindings for 50 bucks, and they are super adjustable, so you will be able to find some if you look around. Also don't worry about chips, scratches, all that shit. Boards are gonna get beat, and you can't see them when they are covered in snow. It won't effect any structure of the board as long as they aren't peeling.

Correct, the RED ones. R.E.D. REDphone Audio Headphones: R.E.D. Helmets for snowboarding or skiing @ Kingkeyser.com - King Keyser Sporting Goods (http://www.kingkeyser.com/store/item.asp?ITEM_ID=1712) They seem pretty good from the little testing I did. Mmm, "100% polyester microfibre and Polartec® Classic fleece"

rode cypress from 0900 to 1300 today
60+cm's in some places, on average 30+cm's everywhere else.
The mountain [at the time] has no power, so everything was being ran on generators or back up engines.
The accumulation of snow with the high winds were incredible, and the inbound avalanches were impressive.
There were cornices that were breaking of even AFTER patrol was cutting certain lines.
The parking lot is a disaster, and the road up is less than ideal. If you don't have chains, or SNOW tires, don't even consider making your way up.
I haven't seen snow like this since 1998

There was a dog lost in the mount seymour backcountry for two weeks.
This just was emailed from Tim Jones.
Thanks to OHLY(name of dog)'s support we have received just over $10,000 in donations specifically to pay for helicopter time for Talon Helicopters for Dec 8. It was 3.3 hours.
Total Bill $8474.39
Talon donated 1.2 hours on Dec 6 , and I deeply appreciate their continued friendship!!!!
We have approx $1600 left over and the NSR Executive has approved my recommendation and is setting aside this amount for future helicopter time for a dog rescue.
Feel free to share this information.
If anyone has any questions direct them to me. Thanks Tim

rough estimate.
closer to 100g's with mountain operation costs/employee wages cost/North shore search and rescue costs as well.

I agree, however there is always going to be that one punter or pair of punters that will go out of bounds because they saw tracks leading to a rad area.

The parking lot is a disaster, and the road up is less than ideal. If you don't have chains, or SNOW tires, don't even consider making your way up.
I haven't seen snow like this since 1998

there were also subaru's and audi's that got high centered/stuck even with snow tires.
the one's that won the parking lot battle were actually trucks and suv's.
Till they got on the road heading down. Then they drive like pansies
A month later and its still hucking down in Japan. It just doesn't make any sense. Just a little update of my season up here. Filmed all this in one 4 hour session.

Sorry to hear bout your NS, celica, but I hope everyone and their buddies lock up their boards. Look around the Cypress racks and I shake my head at the dozens of unlocked NS and Libs just waiting to get snatched.
Grab yourselves a cheap Dakine cable lock. Are they easy to cut? You betcha. But if you lock up your board right beside an unlocked Burton/NS/Lib, thieves are less likely to spend time cutting the locked one. It's a deterrent, and it increases your chances that you'll walk out of the mountain with your board at the end of the day.
It's a big investment, our setups. A $20 lock is well worth the peace of mind.
Edit: for those with really expensive setups, grab a bike lock or a heavy duty lock and lock it at a rack at the start of the day. Only really works in small mountains, but you can have a heavy duty lock waiting at a rack for you when you need it, without the burden of carrying around a bike chain in your pocket. Don't get a Dakine lock if you have a Burton Mystery.

Try 15, give it a few runs. It will feel weird at first, but it always does when you adjust your stance. The way I look at it, if you aren't riding switch 50% of the time, your should favour your body to be riding forward. I'm at 21 and -9, but I like it a bit aggressive.

also, iridium or polarized? or both? don't have experience with either, and i got conflicting information on the internet regarding both makes. In my crowbars I have the H.I. yellow for night and flat light, and had a fire iridium for super sunny days. In van/whistler/baker I almost never used the fires, as its always a little overcast, and I don't have sensitive eyes to light. The H.I. yellow are about 80+% light transmission where I think the fires are down near 20. Head to pacific boarder and they have a chart with all the lenses. Unfortunately, to have anything really decent, you'd need 2, which is pricey.

Pro tip, while edging or even transitioning from edge to edge, use you hands to point you in the direction of where you want to go;
Keep your shoulders square and point with you fingers every time you want to change direction.
This helps with edge control and weight distribution.

HNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGG:sweetjesus:
I'm looking at getting something for next season. Probably like an 05/06 summit 800 as thats the only sled I have experience riding on, other than a new rmk800, which there is no hope of me affording. My buddies 06 has been so awesome to him, and he's got like 6k on it. Where do you usually go?

i could post pictures for days but didn't wanna hijack the thread lol.

No I've only actually been up a few times, all up rainbow except for once, and I think I was up brandywine? Just now kinda getting the opportunity to get out in the backcountry. I've got lots to learn about where to go and what is out there.

I'm gonna be in the market for a sled in a couple years, that and I wanna start doing a lot more touring skiing. The resorts are awesome but nothing beats getting away from it all.

Couldn't agree more. All the other stuff up there that isn't riding was such an experience as well. The sled rides, the hiking, jump building, eating and just hanging out with no one else around was so relaxing.

I'm pretty new at snowboarding and about to look into gear.
But I have a question about bindings.
(Didn't deserve it's own thread but don't know where else to post it)
Some of the bindings I've seen have this adjustment on the bottom, but I have no idea what that does.
Reference pic:

The adjustment on the very bottom, beside the logo.
Does that adjust the binding so it can accomodate different boot sizes??

So is there a point to binding sizes then (S,M,L)?
Or the bindings with that adjustment option only comes in one size, since it's adjustable?
XplicitLuder
01-09-2013, 05:06 PM
The adjustment is for that category. So lets u get a size XL like me. That's for size 11-15. Now the adjustment is there because someone who's a 15 like me, wil need the XL maxed out unlike someone who is a size 11.

Actually its used to rotate the highback so its has more contact when you go on your heel side when you set up your angles.

it's funny yeah but since I have more days on ice than in fresh pow means I'm more used to it. In fact my first serious ride on fresh snow didn't happen until last month so I'm kinda looking for more days like them.
