I'll only go to whistler on weekdays. I don't want to pay almost 100 bucks to wait in a chairlift line on weekends. I'd rather go to baker on a weekend.

Damn. I'll wait until I'm better before I go up to Whistler.
I was thinking of getting a cypress gold card.
How long does a typical season last?
I'll probably be staying on Cypress majority of the season.
This is just my first season, and the blue runs there are about right for me.
btw, do any of you ever go by yourself? :alone:
Like is it generally safe, or is there some code where you should always "buddy-up" when up on the mountain in case you fly off a cliff or something?

Season usually goes till mid march or something like that.
If you use the gold medal card like twice you already save money compared to paying full price two times.
Sometimes I like going alone just to do some cruising at cypress, longer runs compared to seymour which i have a seasons pass.
It's totally safe going alone if you stay inbounds, although some may argue going off the beaten path is still safe alone, for a beginner like you its probably best you stay on the paths.

Seymour and cypress go till mid april. Grouse sometimes goes beyond that for downhill.
Seymour and cypress have to negotiate the terms of usage with the BC parks board for the area they lease for downhill/cross country, and while they can operate beyond mid april, they generally don't due to lack of enthusiasm from the public.
There has only been a couple years in the last 15 that had the season extended. One year in particular was the season of 1998/1999, where the snowbase was so massive, cypress and seymour extended their downhill operation till the beginning of june.
if you're confident in your abilities and only plan to stick to marked blue or green trails, by all means go up on your own. i have always gone by myself, unless i plan on heading up with friends. I have always found that you'll meet someone on the chair. Everyone is there to enjoy the same thing you are.
If you want to lap the terrain park, you'll always find someone that with either tag along with you, or you can tag along with. It's really easy to make new friends on the hill.
If you plan on being an idiot [case in point Sebastien Boucher, who went out of bounds on purpose to allegedly alleviate stress of a friend passing] Then find other like minded idiots and then buddy up.

Went up yesterday night. It's hardpack. And I mean hard. There's softer sections but it's pretty hard most places and it can get icy on certain trails. Kind of reminds me of spring skiing. I had fun though, basically ripped it up and down and carved.

Yeah I was just talking to it with my buddy and honestly, if it was any higher than it already is, I probably wouldn't go anymore. Between the gas it takes to get there, how long it takes to drive there (I live in Ladner) and the price of the lift tickets and food, I'm already pretty reluctant to go there without staying a night.

I've been spoiled with pow this year... so... you know...
I was up at Cypress on Thurs and from the runs I ran:
Collins: hard pack, ice on some sections
Horizon: Ice
Sky Chair: Ice
Rainbow: Sit on your ass and slide down cause, you guessed it, ICE.
Midway Chair: Smoothed out ice for the Nancy Greene Kid Racers.
...basically, powder hounds should stay away from Cypress, cause fresh snow ain't coming to that hill until Wednesday at the earliest forecast.

You're referring to night riding aren't you? Because during the day it's been hovering at 0 to +1 which has given the hills a nice layer of soft pack. Really really fun

Does anyone know if seymour does anything like the grouse Y2play pass, like where you can get an earlybird pass and ride the rest of the year closer to the end of the season. I've done my time at grouse, and it just isn't all that awesome. The park is nothing like it was years previous too, and I know seymour kills it, and also heard cypress stepped it up this year. I haven't been to Whistler in a long while. So I'm just wondering, for you money conscious boarder/skiers is it really worth going up for a day trip or one night stay? Last time I went they still had night riding. Now they're only opened 8:30-3:30. That's pretty weak.. 1 day of Whistler equals to 2 FULL Cypress days where I can take my time and stay there 9AM-10PM if I really wanted to. The drive is also much longer compared to Cypress (almost 3x the distance for me). Is the Whistler experience that much better?
I'm also thinking about Mount Baker instead of Whistler. Anyone stay the night there before? How is the drive?

Do you want a mini vacation? If so its nice getting out of the city and getting to light it up after a day of riding in whistler. Lots of things to consider. If whistler hasn't got snow recently, and it isn't going to be sunny spring like conditions, fuck that, but if the weather is awesome, it will be great. Weekends are packed, but if everything is open and there is new snow I'd say its worth it. Also, I don't know about you, but I'm a guy who has ridden 35+ days a year since I was 11, 16 years ago, and there is no way even when I was in the best shape I could handle riding 13 hours, even stamina aside, unless it was the most epic of days it would be boring.
Now baker....Baker is unreal. It rarely is busy, its cheaper than whistler (by half) has amazing snow and couldn't be a better day to spend a day, if the weather cooperates. As far as a mini vacation though, if you can't get a cabin, staying in bellingham isn't exactly relaxing, its just boring. But cheap beer is nice. Basically what it all comes down to, follow the weather, check snow forecasts, then decide what sort of trip you want to take and the money you want to spend based on that.
Simplex123
01-26-2013, 05:28 PM
Yeah I would never be able to do 13 hours either but I'm just putting it out there. I'm still researching Mount Baker and although the hours of operation are about the same as Whistler it seems very promising and much cheaper! I think there is a place called Glacier 20 minutes down the mountain where there are a lot of lodges/cabins. We're a group of 6 so entertainment in the area isn't that much of a problem.
This place looks decent Baker Accommodations | Home (http://bakeraccommodations.com/index.html)

01-27-2013, 03:47 PM
I agree. While the local mountains are easy to pull 8+ hour days, anything that involves a run that has massive vertical decent will just destroy stamina.
It's SO tough to be able to pull a 6 hour day at a resort style mountain. The runs, the waiting on the lift lines, the lift up and waiting on people make for you body to relax too often, lactic acid build up and all sorts of things to cause fatigue.
My opinion on a getaway of sorts, does involve a weekend, but it's a worthwhile one at that. And that's anything within the interior. Sunpeaks and Bigwhite are at the top of my list.
You can find lift and accommodation packages that rival the most economical options of whistler, and the mountains there offer so much of a diversity that you won't get bored. Add to the fact that the temp is usually MUCH MUCH colder than the coastal mountains means great snow to be had regardless if the sun is shining or not.
The only downside i can see is the 4+ hour drive to and from the resorts.

I went to take a look at some snowboard shorts today since the last time I went I fell on my ass and hurt my tail bone pretty bad lol. I looked at the Protec and Red protective shorts and noticed the padding on the shorts seem pretty hard.
How much would they really help if I were to fall on my ass again if I had these shorts?

Almost got patrol to take me off lol but I was ok to go after , and went boarding yesterday ad pulled my groin when I fell on my tailbone again ;/ been sore as fuck. you're kidding right?
I have a pair of padded shorts, and they protect the tail bone, your hip bones and other vital areas that you might hit when you fall.
I wear them 9 out 10 times, and especially on hard packed days on the hill. And especially when i'm jumping.
yes they are pricey for what they are, but it's just like anything else in winter sports.
they do benefit you when the chair lift is wet, as they don't absorb water so you won't feel the dampness on your butt.

which impact shorts do you use, Vangruver? care to name drop some good ones worth looking at? REDs, maybe some Dainese... Skeletoolz?
Fairly easy to get REDs from Showcase, but not really sure how good they are. Dainese must be fairly good (I would assume) since they probably have tech from their motorcycle division, though finding a local dealer maybe harder. Skeletoolz has been name dropped on different forums, so they've probably got some form of reputation...

I currently have a pair of RED impact shorts, and did use Crash pads before this pair.
Crash Pads protective (http://www.crash-pads.com/)
I like the red over the crashpads due to the foam that they use, its like a memory foam type. VERY dense and disperses the impact over a larger surface than traditional closed cell foam.
I can't speak on Dainese or other brands considering i haven't used anything other than RED or Crashpads, but Dainese is MASSIVE in full body protection. And not just for motorcycles. DH biking is one of their fortes as well.
They do take a little bit to get used to.....make your pants tighter in areas that you never thought they'd be tight :/ But in the end they do benefit even in the slightest slip up.
If you want something that can protect your tail bone, what I could suggest is that you go and buy a thin dense piece of foam and have it sewn into your snowboard pants, within the liner. Similar in nature to how bicycle shorts have padding on the crotch area. If you sew in a "pocket" you can put in and take out the foam padding depending on how you feel. Make it 10cm wide by 15-20cm long and it might actually be the cheapest protection for your butt possible.
otherwise, there's a whole SLEW of them featured here.

and what's wrong with wrist guards?
westopher
01-29-2013, 10:37 PM
Typical wrist guards will just snap your arm instead. There is a good reason that your wrists bend the way they do. There are snowboard specific wrist guards though I believe that allow flex. Still though, learning to keep my arms in when I fall has absolutely saved me. I used to dislocate my shoulder weekly when I was younger during snowboard season. Since I've learned to fall properly, it hasn't happened once snowboarding over the past 3 years. Too bad I fucking did it during hockey anyways 2 weeks ago.:okay:

Only padding I rock is a helmet to protect my brain bucket. Even when I was downhilling mountain biking I just wore helmet and shin pads, never believed or wanted to wear the full body armour. All it's really going to protect you from is road rash, and chicks dig that shit.
Skiing? Hell you don't need them padded shorts, I snowboarded for about 8 seasons and if you're really riding it's not going to do much imo. Plus, your LCF without pads is far superior.
Getting bumps and bruises is all part of the sport, I did a 360 the other weekend and when I landed my face went into my pole and bent it pretty good and I couldn't see too well out of my left eye. Had a wicked headache and ended up drinking it off that night. Pain is all in your head man.

That's not what I meant but ok. The guy posting says he's a noob and he's going to get some pads. I was just pointing out that it doesn't matter if you're good or bad, you can still wear them. I don't wear them either but if you're falling on your ass enough then it doesn't hurt to get them.

Back when I lived in whistler I'd wear a down jacket when I was riding black park just for the extra cushion on those fucking jumps, even if it was +5 and sunny. Haha I'd be so sweaty after a day of lapping that park it would feel like I got out of a hot tub. I think if I was going to wear any pads my first choice would be knee pads. Everyone is different, and everyone has a different opinion on what's good and what's proper.
If you must know why i opt to wear padded shorts, it's because of skateboarding, and the last 27 years of skateboarding.
Falling and having you land on your tailbone ON a handrail isn't the best feeling in the world, doing that multiple times results in a fractured tailbone. A bone within your body that is utterly USELESS.
I can't say that I'm the BEST snowboarder on this board, but i am pretty sure that i'm am immesnily competent rider. So for TheSalesman to put forward a compliment like that is much appreciated.
To add.
Bumps and bruises are a part of any sport, I agree, but let me put it to you this way.
A lot of people don't ski or snowboard full time, and i bet a fair bit of those same individuals do require to be 100% attentive in their day to day lives.
Not everyone has a desk job and can stay immobile the majority of the day. and I'm sure some people even interact with the public.
I'm going to call you out, because if you want those bumps and bruises and facial scars for the rest of your life, so be it. Not one person here is going to stop you.
but if you're like me, and want to be able to teach your kids how to ski or snowboard, then take the safe way out protect yourself if you don't feel comfortable.
ziggyx
02-01-2013, 10:49 PM
Bumps and bruises are one thing but injury is another thing. Although the likely hood of getting injured isnt super high or anything, I would just rather be on the safe side.
Also if I can walk away with less pain from bailing it'll be better for me since I'm still learning. Less bumps and bruises = less healing time, therefore I can get out there more.
I wish I was good enough that I didn't need them lol, but that's not the case.
FYI, there's no such thing as being good enough to not need protective gear.
The better you are, the faster/quicker your riding speed is going to be. That means that when you tumble/catch an edge/collide with someone (and I promise you that you will no matter how good you are), you're consequences are a lot more magnified.
Not to mention in general, that when your skill increases anyways, you tend to do more crazier, challenging things like small bump jumps, to park stuff.
If you can spare the coin.... do it. And crash pads isn't even like the helmet issue where most people don't wear it for style purposes. considering how baggy snowboarding clothes are... there's no way anyone can tell you're wearing one.

I arrived at Grouse at 8:30 sharp (opening time).
The line up to buy the tickets and get on the lift took about 10~ mins.
Wasn't that packed in the morning. Stayed on "The Cut" throughout most of the day and as it got busier in the afternoon,
it was probably still 5 mins wait at most to get on the chair lift.
The other chair lifts as you went higher up the mountain were relatively empty.
:notbad:
Definitely expected it to be more packed due to the 50% off Family Day deal.
Maybe the light rain deterred everyone?? It was pretty foggy for most of the day.
At one point, it was so bad, I would be on the chair lift and could barely see further than the chair lift in front.

I'm planning to get a new board/bindings this week.
Pretty set on the K2 Happy Hour because it's only $350 at Sport Chek and I have a 20% coupon making it $100 cheaper than online stores. It's reviewed to be a very fun board that's good for all mountain and in the park. I haven't been in the park much but I plan to start when I get this board probably gonna be 80% around the mountain hitting jumps and 20% in the park.
Which bindings would be most compatible with the board and my riding style?
I've come down to 3 sets around $175-200: Burton Cartel, Ride Capo, and 390 Boss.

I had issues with my cartels but that was back in the day. They always rotated when I landed funny and I broke like 5 baseplates in 2 seasons. I've never had any issues with my 390s and I actually found them more comfortable also, but thats more dependant on how they fit your boot.

Nobody's tried the Ride Capo's? I'm interested in those the most. Their micro disc is supposed to reduce the dead spots at the binding/board's contact points.

There is the one green and one blue off of mystery, but those split into a couple more further down the mountain, and then they all join back before the end of the run. All parks are usually open(unless they are doing maintenance/prepping for an upcoming event).
Lodge and Bunny hill(magic carpet) will be open as well.

My butt keeps getting wet cause of the amount of sitting I generally do.

If you're planning on buying new pants for next season I don't see the harm/risk in spraying those onto your current pants. Just read the directions/follow the instructions. I'm pretty sure there are lots of products out there for waterproofing clothes/fabrics.
That or you could always cut up one end of a garbage bag so both ends are open. tuck one end into your pants and leave it hanging over like a skirt lol.

Whistler was soooo deep in the alpine yesterday. Any thing more than halfway down red was terrible though, because thats where the rain hit for a bit.
Here is me when I stopped. This was with my board on. If it was off I probably would have been up to my waist.

Early Bird Cypress Season Passes for sale now. You can start using them March 18 2013 - end of 2014 season. There are also family rates that save you ~$25-70 each depending on how old you are and which pass you get (must have same address).
These prices are even cheaper than the MINI discount right?

Went off a jump and landed on my head last night at the Panorama park on Cypress on my last run... after hitting those three jumps all day... Had a minor concussion lol can't remember things properly from before jumping until I got to the lodge. Just remember bits and pieces. Only thing I remember was hearing some fucking asshole yell "sweet spot to sit around!" when I was half passed out.
Apparently I rode down the mountain by myself but I have no memory of that at all. Good thing I was wearing a helmet. Fucking saved me. My head/neck luckily feels fine even though I cracked my helmet good.
Kind of fucked up my new board though :okay:
Anything I can do about it? Any recommended board shops?

Board is done man, like fully garbage. Take it in to a k2 dealer, they will likely warranty it. Good to hear you aren't hurt. I can't understand why anyone rides without a helmet, clearly that could have been bad. My stupid fucking friends always just "leave their helmets in their cars" or "find them uncomfortable." A night in a hospital bed is really uncomfortable.

Can't remember how I jumped but it was the first jump in the park. There was about an inch or two of new snow but once you wipe it away it was basically ice. I think I just might have just over exhausted myself. Went for about 7 hours with a 80% left knee. At least now I know my limit. Went to the doctor today and he said there's like a 4cm circular indent at the back of my head. Getting a CT scan soon to make sure everything is good.

Yeah you'll definitely need a helmet no matter what level you're at. People can lose control and crash into you or you might just catch a nasty edge. Hopefully my accident can scare you guys without a helmet to now ride with one.

speaking of ppl crashing into me, i was chillin on the side cus my legs got tired (i was starring UP the mountain so my butt is facing down the mtn) and this 3 year old girl locked me as a target and literally came at me from like..10 yards away loool just straight lined it and smashed into my board and she flew over it and hit the snow face first. i was like wtf?

Its likely they will warranty it. I've broken probably 15+boards and every time it was warrantied other than the couple times I blew the edge/core up on a rock. Just go in, be honest and be nice and they will want to help you out.
On the helmet/people crashing into you topic, some fucking asshole skier hit me from behind in whistler last weekend and it spun me around and caught my heels, whipping me onto the back of my head. I chased him down and we actually got into a bit of a scrap at the bottom of the hill. I ended up just walking away after some shit talk and a few shoves. Not in the mood to get my ass kicked/go to jail for kicking someones ass. I was fucking pissed though. If it was him that fell and smoked his head wether it was his fault or my fault is irrelevant, I still would have stopped to make sure he was alright. He's clearly a fucking piece of shit, and karma will get him.

I guess snow got in and melted that's why it made that line. Here are better pictures. Is it even a big problem?

Had an epic day up at Baker yesterday.
Unfortunately my skis are broken, the edge is seperating fromt he ski itself. Have about 3" sticking out from the ski. I'm really torn on if I should pick up a new set of skis or not as the ones I would be getting would be a fatter set up. Or if I should just rock my "park" skis the rest of the season. I think i'm going to pick the latter just based on the fact that there "shouldn't" be any new snow coming along.

Good thing I learnt right away that helmets are super important.
Last season I went for the first time and borrowed a buddy's gear.
Was going down toe edge and my heel edge got caught and I went flying into the air and smacked the back of my head.
I was completely fine, but made me realize I'm never going to ride again without a helmet.
I bought a helmet that's comfortable for me, and it's served me well this season a few times already. Best $90 I've spent...
I like it so much, I'm contemplating whether to do a DIY custom paint job on it during the summer, so it'll match the rest of my gear.

Yeah its funny man, you look at the snow report and it says 13cms or whatever. What they don't tell you is that it rained 13mm after that, then froze, then melted again, then rained again, then 100km/h winds made sure to smooth out the ice.

Are all the lift tickets for Whistler and BlackComb?

Think of mashed potatoes, and think of the consistency, also similar to the consistency of sand as well...
Then think about 15 degree sun, and sunshine, enhanced by 1100 meters of vertical.
Then think about girls wearing less clothing while they are skiing or snowboarding.
Then think about how you can ski/ride in the hot sunshine till 7-8pm
Yes, it's fully worth it.

I was contemplating whether to buy a pair or not.
I have heard things like
-they don't slip or roll down your shins
-they don't bunch up in your boots
-better ventilation (or specific ventilation zones)
-more comfortable...
Do they really make that much of a difference?
Are they worth the price ($15-$20)?

I've been rocking them for years, so my vote is yes they are worth it. Just be careful if you've been used to wearing thin socks all your life as the board socks tend to be a bit thicker.

I've been using the Neff snowboard socks for 2 seasons now and there's no way I can go back to regular socks. Sometimes they go on sale on whiskey militia so keep a look out for them if you don't want to pay full price. Otherwise, I would say they're totally worth it.

04-03-2013, 07:11 PM
There are a few different thicknesses from a lot of brands and some have temp ranges on them. I have 5 pairs and rotate them so I always have a pair. I refuse to go without them. If I forget them on a trip, I'll buy some. Anything that keeps you comfortable, means you can ride harder and feel better. They pay for themselves by keeping you riding for an extra hour on those cold shitty days up peak. My grenade ones are my favourite, but I think its just cause they look cool. They all really work as well as the other. I prefer the thinner ones, because it rarely is cold out here on the coast.
