Figured I would start a new thread for this upcoming winter season since vangruver hasn't been around for awhile. I'm pretty excited already and it's only september lol. I got a tripped planned to either big white or hemlock right after boxing day. I'll also be hitting up the local mountains here and there. Maybe buying a pass to the local mountains or maybe (very small chance) whistler pass.

Only problem is that I have no vehicle to get to the mountains and I am reluctant on public transit/shuttles. :okay:

Woooooooooooooooo, getting my whistler student pass again this year.

But pretty fucking pissed, my truck just shat itself and unfortunately that takes priority over getting a nice set of powder/touring skis at the turkey sale.

Yeah I think I will be buying a seymour pass, $250 is almost too good to give up even if i gotta force myself to transit/shuttle. I'll also try to make it out for the GoPro meets this season.

Yeah man hopefully we will see each other there. I'm in my last year of school so it gives me more of a reason to buy the student pass haha.

I can ride greens and blues comfortably. I'm trying to land some small jumps now and do some tricks here and there. Hopefully buying a pass will allow me to grt a lot better this year.
previous seasons i would only go about 4-5 times. What about you, what's your riding level?

I can do pretty much all of seymour, this will be my 4th season of boarding. I can do small jumps here and there off the sides and I've tried the big jumps right below the chairlifts with varying degrees of success lol. I can also do very basic rails/boxes. Still working on how to properly do spins, I seem to just blank out mid air lol.

Lets get a list of ppl that are going seymour or even cypress. Maybe get a whatsapp group going haha.

Anything in particular? You can wait for the sales on west 4th/burrard. Or when you pick up your seymour season pass you will also get a coupon book that gets you I believe 20% off your purchase at Coastal Riders. The 20% is usually better than the sale prices. Also the 20% is applied to the full price of the item, no stacking discounts.

That looks like costco. I actually have a bolle helmet from there. It's similar to that picture but it's the older model i guess. The helmet I have is pretty cheap, it keeps my head warm and has saved my head twice after bailing pretty hard haha. So if you're looking for something cheap I would recommend it. As for the goggles, the one you have there I'm not too sure about. But I also have super cheap bolle goggles from costco and they don't really fit well over my face which is why I'm looking for new goggles right now. I'm sure the more pricey bolle goggles are better though.

Don't buy the Costco Bolle goggles, they are so-so and the fit is horrible... also fogs up easy. Also, the lens is too dark for cloudy days - can't see properly! :P

Turkey Sale is on this weekend as mentioned, go up to Whistler if you have time for insane prices. Otherwise other stores locally are also having pre-season sales clearing out old stuff, Swiss Sporthaus in West Van, Destination Outfitters in North Van, etc. Comor and the others along West 4th ought to have something as well.

Otherwise, keep an eye out online - I've had lots of luck with Backcountry.com and Steep and Cheap. Cheap shipping to Point Roberts too if you guys do that. I've bought 2 excellent pair of goggles for $40 each.

I prefer Smith goggles rather than Oakley, better visibility on the models I have tried plus a great goggle at a better price. Helmets are always a good investment, I love Giro helmets because they are light and comfortable for wearing the entire day on the hill.

Backcountry.com Ski Goggles (http://www.backcountry.com/bcs/sale/Goggles-Goggle-Accessories/bcsCat131000063/cat.html) - bump any sale up to 50% off. Good deals.

What kind of monopods are you guys using? I usually do a helmet mount, but would be interested in trying to do the monopod mount, looks cool!

Also, how hard is it to balance with the monopod when going down a run?

Just using a $15 monopod from Walmart and a $5 attachment from GoPro. As a snowboarder if you are able to board without relying on using your free hands to balance yourself etc then its super easy.
But as a skier, I don't think it would work well unless you don't use poles. You can always clamp mount onto one of your poles, I've seen a couple videos like that and it looked decent.

If we meet up you're welcome to try the mount out on mine.

I plan on making my own monopod lol, using an old ski pole or something. One of those adjustable hiking sticks would be awesome, but it's too much money. Saw a youtube video on how to make on, just smash and flatten the end and drill a hole for the GoPro mount. If that falls through, I can try to make one out of PVC lol.

Still gotta get my skis mounted, got them in April and still haven't got them done :(

Any tips/opinions on whether to go to Big White or Whistler for a group of ~5-6 people?

i've never been to either mountain and I'm curious about the cost effectiveness and when the best time to go for either resort is. Although weather is out of my hands, at least I can try to mitigate it using averages and other people's experiences.

I've been to both once or twice?????? I can't remember..

I only know the obvious points which are:
-whistler is bigger and a bit more pricey
-big white is quite the drive compared to whistler

If you're going for a trip (more than one day), christmas to new years is the most expensive for both.

It all also depends on what kind of skiers you guys are. Are you the super hardcore shredding type, or also like to do apres-ski partying? Whistler has way more options for that - Big White or any of the interior resorts do not really have night-life per se.

Whistler has way more terrain/acres than Big White, so variety is unbeatable. Both can get bad visibility days (Big Whiteouts is the nickname for Big White) but Whistler has excellent tree-skiing areas which are still fun even in foggy situations. Learning is also good (but expensive) in Whistler - incredible instructors. Lifts are much faster in Whistler, but big line-ups can occur.

It is more expensive in Whistler, but it kind of evens out if you figure out the driving time to Big White and the cost of gas. I drove there and the Coquihalla does tire you out quite a bit because of the conditions you will face. How many cars are going? Are you comfortable driving up in winter conditions, including facing possible snowstorms? If not, stick to Whistler - the Sea to Sky is really easy nowadays, and it is a major route. The road TO Big White was the major sketchy driving portion of the route, I nearly did some Initial D during some of the hairpins it was that slippery. 45 minutes of hairpins in winter conditions is not for the faint of heart.

You missed the turkey sale, huge deals on gear. :(

I keep an eye out on Steep and Cheap for jackets and pants and helmets and other stuff. Just bought a Bern Brentwood helmet in matte red (gotta love color-coordinating, just need red pants to match!) for $30, and if it doesn't fit I'll just return it. The baseball looking helmets are going to be fine as long as you get one from a major brand, and it has the proper foam liner. Bern, Smith, Giro, POC, RED - these are major helmet brands. I've probably missed quite a few. POC is damn expensive but considered to be the best. I like Smith and Giro, giving Bern a shot. I have a RED helmet, pretty functional IMO.

The Clymb has great deals on stuff as well, they have a sale on RED helmets right now - $35 for the RED Trace which is what I have right now.

Also, anyone know what Mt.Baker is like? My buddy and some friends are going this December and want me to tag along (as long as exams permit).

Do a bit of research about where to go. If you take backcountry gear it changes the experience from awesome, to super awesome. Last year there was crazy amounts of snow every time I went. Its a lot different from whistler. You have to pay a bit more attention, as not every cliff has ropes. They will rope em if they are unsafe, but if you can drop em, its fair game. Powder days are pow DAYS, not pow mornings. Bring 2 sets of goggles, because one pair will end up filled with snow at some point.:fullofwin: I don't know the mountain like whistler, since I lived in whis for a couple years, so I can't give much advice where to go. I can say though, if its an icy shitty day, its not great, as there is no real park to play in, but, thats not usually an issue.

1. Saucywoman. Haven't been to seymour, ride greens and non steep blues. Bad accident a few years back and scared to get too much speed from something steep and bail hard again
2. Roastpuff. Haven't been to seymour, but I ski cypress and Whistler. I do blues, mostly, some blacks.

Always looking for more people to ride with. Can't wait for the new high speed quads!

care to elaborate on this?

I'll be signing up for the CVC trip since it's cheap as fuck, but 300+ people will track the mountain mega-fast i'm sure of it.

Probably not worth it for that reason alone, which probably means night life will have to be top notch to make this worthwhile...

Most times those trips devolve into a gigantic weekend-long party. Most people make it out of the condo maybe 10-11AM and come back in around 2PM. Then the apres starts early and lasts all night long.

That's why 300 extra people won't be that noticeable if you can get out of the condo early and don't get too wasted during the night.

that's easy enough to do... the apres can wait until after the last chairlift leaves the station.

I'll get pics up when I pick it up, I ordered it online from oregon and had it shipped to point roberts.

I got the dragon APXs. I know 250 was quite a lot but I really like the look and after trying on a few goggles I just wanted them pretty bad lol.

I think I got them for a good deal. I got the APXs knight rider which comes with 3 lenses + I ordered an extra lens which is why it came out to 250. The boardroom sells just the goggles for 260+tax.

Oh rexsomnii I think a lot of the stores on west 4th are having sales on the 2012 helmets if you're still looking for one. Seems like they were 30-50% off but size and selection is limited so I would go check it out asap. If you like you can also check out Snowboard. Skate. Surf. Clothing. Shoes. | Tactics Board Shop (http://www.tactics.com) which is where I ordered my stuff. Everything on that site has no tax since its from oregon and just get it shipped to point roberts. Plus it helps when the canadian dollar is a bit stronger right now.

Grouse is really easy to get to and convenient, probably the most convenient place out of all of them. However, the runs are pretty boring, IMO (I haven't skied there in a bit so YMMV) and small compared to Cypress. Never been to Seymour but I think they are similar in size?

Not bad, but if you have a car I'd recommend going to Cypress instead.

melloman
11-05-2012, 12:34 PM
I'd say Seymour has the easiest access, as the parking lot is right where the lifts are. Not really any walking necessary.. Yet Seymour is quite small, and runs can be done in a matter of seconds/minutes.

Yet Seymour is always fun for a terrain park junkie. :D

If you are going for an hour or 2, and live in vancouver, grouse is the best choice IMO. Cypress sucks for someone like me, who likes to ride park when riding in the city. The snow around here is too shitty and heavy for me to even want to just cruise, if there is a park around. I'll ride whistler/baker if I'm chasing deep snow, or just go sled. Seymour is awesome, but kinda a hassle to get to for me, living in kits.

I'll take a powder day over park any day. I started at Seymour so it's the mountain I'm most familiar with but it was a total bitch going up there when I didn't have a car. The park is always a ton of fun but it's definitely not as well maintained as Grouse. And for Cypress, I just haven't had the best experiences there, getting kicked out of the park because I didn't have a helmet :(

From someone who went from cartels to 390s, there is no comparison. The cartels are less comfortable, I broke 3 baseplates in one season, and they will shift if you land weird on big jumps. It was the case with me and all of my buddies that rode them. Cartels highbacks are too high for me personally as well. They wouldn't sit as well on my calf as the 390s do. I also ride sz 9 boots and I have the L/XL. I have had 3 sets of them over 5 seasons. The only reason I bought new ones is because I got a rome proform from my buddies shop a few seasons in a row. My opinion is very biased since i went from a Flow The five bindings to the cartels. Making that switch was night and day so ill be praising the cartels. My opinion is very biased since i went from a Flow The five bindings to the cartels. Making that switch was night and day so ill be praising the cartels. Do price matching for this years cartels at evo.com. Thats how i got my board for cheap and the cartels for 170. they'll probably be full price right now still though

Good site btw. Saved me 15 on the 390 bosses over another local shop i was looking at.

Oh ya, just ordered the bosses!!!! fuark yaaaaaaa!

It's such a big competition for opening day between cypress and grouse.

i'm sure that the base on either mountain with the 3 runs that they open will be 20+ cm of compacted cement.

Seymour was saying they need over 100 cm base to open. Probably wont be for another week at least.

seymour needs a minimum of 90cm to open any of their terrain. They have never spent extravagant amounts of money to summer groom their terrain. As it's a gov't park during their off lease periods they would rather put the money they have elsewhere during the winter.

they also don't have any snow making machines, or much in the way of other facilities that grouse or cypress has.

now remember last year? when cypress had a 30cm base to open the beginning of the season?

now take the 1000's of people that rode that FOOT of snow base, only to have mother nature not cooperating for a couple weeks.

the result?

the shitty mud puddles in the middle of the runs for days on end.

It wasn't worth it for those that traveled far from the fraser valley to spend their money to ride shitty snow.

Seymour has always done something right with their motives, and i know that it doesn't work well with a lot of people.

push snow from the area's that have next to nothing to the areas that have next to something.

plus grouse has snow guns as well.

it's a ageless tactic that mountains do in order to falsify their base measurements.

cypress takes snow that falls onto 3A and 3B lots all the time to falsify their base measurement.

There are tons.

Companies I've personally used in the past are dogfunk, backcountry, thehouse, evo, tactics or rakuten for weird japanese stuff.

Once you've found what you want just google it and find the cheapest price that way. Most of those companies will ship within the usa for free if you spend like 50-100 bucks.

Good Luck.

I ordered from tactics. Pretty good experience so far but then i dont shop online much. They called to make sure my card wasnt stolen since the shipping and billing address didnt match up. I had my stuff shipped to point roberts. Another plus was no tax since its from oregon and free shipping within the states after 75 i think?. I didnt get taxed at the border either and i claimed my purchases.

Only downside is that tactics is a bit more limited in selection and sizes compared to evo.com or other places.

But yeah like LYC said shop around.

You guys can get stuff locally for pretty much the same price. I'd rather spend my money at local shops than spend it in the states to save 15 bucks on a 300 dollar jacket, that you don't even get to look at in person. That said the last years gear that you can find online you probably won't find here, but if you can get it here, support your local shops.

TSB. Their prices adjust according to the size of your parcel. The lineups there are now significantly shorter than before as well. I think it's because most people park their car at the boarder and walk across the to closer company. I don't mind driving over since I have a nexus pass.

I second this. While "some" deals are too good to pass up, there a lot of hidden treasures in many shops in the lowermainland. Even Craigslist has a lot of pros selling barely used gear at a stupid low price.

Hint.

If you do manage to find a pro or a sponsored rider selling their gear, chances are you will get yourself a one off item, sometimes a deck that is a prototype or a custom item. Happens all the time

I'd offer and provide links but there is a certain mod on this site that has a hard on for deleting my posts. That mod think I'm trying to make a profit from things that aren't even things I'm selling.

Some of you guys have gotten messages from me about deals, and I'm sure it will happen again.

Hey all, I will be teaching someone snowboarding this year. IIRC, wasn't there a small run for kids/beginners in Whistler where the lift to the top was really more of a conveyer belt? and the slope is highly gentle.

Anyone know if this still exists? or the name the run/place so I can find it? It would really really be a big help for that someone.

I briefly looked at the trail map for whistler blackcomb but I didn't see any conveyor belt. You can always try the local mountains, seymour has a conveyor belt and cypress has a dedicated bunny slope chair lift that is supposed to be easy for beginners to learn how to use the chairs.

Thing is i'm going to go with the girlfriend who has only boarded once, but is actually pretty good for only going once.

Is it worth going to cypress or grouse vs seymour? I am essentially going to be teaching her the entire time as we are planning a group trip to Whistler so she wanted some practice.

Thanks.

From what I've seen from the past three years, boyfriends love teaching girlfriends at the Cypress bunny hill. Couples everywhere on that run. Just today practicing switch i count ~4 couples just buttsliding on the way down Easy Rider.

Besides the couple-friendly nature, Easy Rider and Collins are probably the best green runs in the city. Easy Rider has a nice slow lift, good big runout, lifties that pay attention when you fall, and a nice wide mellow slope to practice falling leaf in. Collins is just as great, just as mellow, and just as wide as Easy Rider, so right there you have 2 great runs to teach and progress in. Plus, Collins has a nice varied slope, with an uphill that teaches you to NOT slow down unless you want to do the Walk of Shame, a fairly steep (for beginners) hairpin turn and then a nice mellow slope to do ~100 skidded turns in.

Go with Cypress if you want to learn/teach riding.

Yeah, you can request for the lifties to slow down the lift at Easy Rider which they usually grant, although she might as well get used to the regular speed that the lifts offload at.

You just have to call it out as you approach the ramp if you want the lift slowed down. Otherwise theyll just let you off at the regular speed.

On west4th, Boardroom, but not the normal store, go next door to their outlet one. In the back there are plenty to choose from.

I decided last year I wasn't gonna wear a scarf/bandana/belaclava anymore and was just gonna man up and tuck my chin in while on the chairlift.

Buy online and get yourself a Polar Buff or a Cyclone Buff. It's a purchase you will never regret. Way better than the Airholes or Bulas you get locally.

The Buff material doesn't freeze on your face, dries fast, keeps your face warm, really good at deflecting freezing rain, and doesn't stink due to anti-bacterial properties.

Peep that shit.

Man if I still live in Van next year I'm going to get a seymour pass. Grouse is fucking terrible, and cypress' park is too mellow. I'm kicking myself in the ass for buying that y2play.

Is it easy to breathe with it on? I use a neck tube thing, and it's really thick and kinda hard to breathe at times, and it gets hot cuz it keeps in all the moisture.

What type of material is yours made of? I heard the one from MEC is made of merino wool and apparently it is pretty good at not getting moist etc.

The material of the Buffs is a Polyester microfiber (same feel as lens cleaning cloths) with a soft fleece lower half for the Polar Buff and Cyclone Buff. Regular Buffs don't have the fleece on the bottom, since they're not made for cold weather like the other two.

There's only one layer of microfiber on the Polar Buff so it's easier to breathe into, and the material is doubled on the Cyclone Buff, making it slightly harder to breathe into. You can breathe through your mouth in either case.

The fleece lower half doesn't get too hot compared to my Bula thick fleece necktube, which is scorching. The Polar Buff has softer fleece than the Cyclone since it doesn't have the wind protection the Cyclone does, and therefore is much lighter and cooler.
