: Fall / Winter 2012/13 - when are your snow tires going on?

Well...been quite mild in the city although in the wee hours of the morning we are averaging 6 degrees. But once the afternoon hits, we are back above 15 degrees.

So for the city dwellers, and from what we can see in this unusually warm weather...when do you anticipate that you're gonna need to slap on them snow tires?

Most install them around mid to late Oct...but based on current weather pattern, I'm thinking we might be able to stretch into mid to late Nov.

Washed up the blizzaks...

Last winter I only put about 5000km on my winter tires

I'm just waiting on the big snow dump.

Until then I'll be riding on my Continental DWS tires.

Once the weather is consistently at a high of 6 degrees, the winters pop on.
However, they may pop on earlier if needed going up to Whistler!

Just picked up a set of Gislaved winter tires through work. They're a subsidiary of Continental, and I hear the ones I bought are a good tire. I'll be doing mine Tuesday even if the weather is still a bit warm, if I don't do them now, work might get too insane for me to mount my own tires.

Picked up my Hankook winters last week. The mornings are a little cold for my liking to run on summers, but my Bridgestones aren't slipping yet so I'll hold it off. Probably when the mountains open I'll throw them on.

My snow wheels look better than my stock ones so I'm a little eager.

Check out the hakkapelllitititiaiaiiisiaiiaaaa R by nokian. They are very well regarded by everyone I have known that runs them (or the other models of the hakkas). Very soft though, so I'd suggest them more if you are doing mountain runs to whistler and baker, maybe not for just rolling around the city. You might want to check the spelling though. I think mine may be off.

general altimax on 17 stock rims, heard good things about the tires.

tried goodyear ultra grip ice, firestone winterforce, bridgestone blizzacks and nokians.

have to say the one I would never buy again is the winterforces even though the treadwear is hella amazing but thats a trade off for grip on ice/snow.

When it is consistently below 0 then they will salt roads. Also bridges and passes as those tend to ice up at night if the sky is clear.

Depends on what tires, studded would do relatively well, Toyo has something using walnut shells to bite the ice, my Pirellis did alright. Most good winter tires would at least let you stop after some distance instead of playing air hockey with your car on all seasons.

I don't have any experience with the Continental WinterContacts but I do have experience with the General Altimax.

The Altimax does a great job cutting through snow and has excellent grip.

Plus the price I paid for a brand new set was an absolute steal. 205/55/16 , 400 bucks for the set brand new.

EDIT:

2 years ago when there was that one big snow fall, I was safely cruising on Knight Bridge while people were struggling to keep shit straight. Some of them spun out on the exit ramp :lawl:

For a studless snow tire in the 'budget' category, the Altimax takes it for me. Lots of excellent reviews, lots of people happy with it. If I had extra $$ to spend I would either go with the Michelin Xi2/Xi3 or the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-70. Or the Nokian Hakka's, but I have no experience with those.

Winter Tech - Bridgestone Blizzak FAQs (http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=116#howlong)

Well, just expect a drop in performance around the time you hit the indicators or approx. 5/32", which is around the time that winters are supposed to be less effective for snow anyways.

IIRC it's not just the effectiveness at 7 degrees, it's the effects on the rubber compounds when they drop below a certain temperature. There's a bunch of tire shops advertising that they store tires "in a temperature controlled environment" for just such a reason.

Either way, I'm glad I've got mine on so when that first day of dusting comes and everyone panics, I'll be able to drive by pointing and laughing.

Very unlikely. Depending on your truck, you may be able to get steelies for about a hundred bucks at a wrecker, but then tires will probably be about $150/corner, plus installation, fees, taxes, and the like. it's not likely you'll do anything less than a thousand dollars unless you order online and pick up down south.

Even then you'll get hit with taxes and duties.

Don't know what he's on, our family X-Trail is passable through the winter with all-seasons but no friggin way I'm trying it with the Civics again. The Corolla I had sliding down the hill uncontrollably in front of me last year was proof enough that winter tires do make a hell of a difference.

The Hankook 4S All Weather tire is interesting.
It is an all season tire but has an dedicated inner section for winter.
What makes it different from other all seasons tires is that is has been rated for winter and carries the Mountain Snowflake symbol.
For those looking for a new all season passenger tire, this definitely warrants a closer look.

Video is sponsored by Canadian Tire who is the only supplier in Canada. So be warned for bias.
Hankook All Weather Tires - YouTube

I put on my X- ice 3 last week and got some good use out of them last night as I headed up the Fraser Canyon. Very good grip and braking. Had to do an emergency brake/manoeuvre to avoid a deer. Was in control the entire time.
Highly recommend the tires to anyone who is interested in a winter set.

This was a much better article: Hey, winter tire liars: flake off - The Globe and Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/car-life/hey-winter-tire-liars-flake-off/article5239987/)

Dear Tire Police,

Well, here you are again. Shilling for the tire companies. Urging us to all get winter tires.

I can’t read a newspaper or listen to the radio without hearing one of you so-called “experts” recommending that drivers shell out hard-earned money to fit their vehicles with the appropriate tires required for winter driving conditions.

“Beware! Beware!” you cry. Anyone driving in this country without winter tires is asking for disaster. It’s all a bunch of environmentalist overreaction.

Why do you think snow and cold are so dangerous? I’ve never seen a snowflake shoot anyone. This is Canada. We can take a little snow and cold. Nope, the sad fact is that this hue and cry is an annual event designed to stop us from exerting our god-given right to be in, and be the cause of, traffic accidents.

I, for one, won’t fall for it.

I know lots of reasonable citizens who choose to ride out the harsh, perilous winter on balding all-seasons. Should they be locked up? Just because they feel that it’s more important to save a few hundred dollars rather than protect the safety of themselves, their loved ones and others? Don’t believe me? Why don’t you do a bit of research – during the winter, you can find many of them recuperating at any one of our country’s well-run, under-crowded hospitals.

There are many good reasons for a driver who lives in this country – a climate where it’s winter 13 out of every 12 months (few people know it, but summer in Canada is actually a winter-induced group hallucination caused by prolonged exposure to extreme cold).

What if they have winter tires, but they left it too long to put them on? Why should they pay the money? What if they are going to sell their vehicle in the spring and they don’t want to invest in a new quartet of winter rubber? Sure, they might find themselves driving in a heavy snowstorm or on icy conditions, and they might – might – because they didn’t get winter tires, end up in a bad, potentially fatal car accident. But that’s all “might.” If they don’t get winter tires, they are sure to save at least $400.

What if they live in a big city? Everyone knows that it doesn’t snow in big cities and, when it does, thousands of dedicated city workers descend on the city’s streets like a plague of civic-minded snow-eating locusts.

Sorry to burst your bubble, Tire Police, but in places like Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton, the city streets are clear – bone-dry – 20 minutes after any snowfall.

But let’s say, for argument’s sake, that the city’s street remained covered in snow and ice for days (or weeks) on end. Let’s just pretend that, instead of cleaning the streets in 20 minutes, workers leave the streets virtually untouched and spend their time seeing how completely they can encase vehicles in mountains of heavily packed snow.

Well, even so, there are too many cars on the road for accidents to be a problem. Even if conditions are terrible, there’s no problem. There’s safety in numbers. Remember? Every smart driver knows the old adage – snow and ice plus millions of tired, angry, poorly trained drivers equals road safety.

It’s around this time of year that you Tire Police throw a bunch of science nonsense at us tire-skeptics. Here’s a doozy from some think-tank calling itself Transport Canada, “Tires marked “M + S” (Mud and Snow), or ‘all-season’ tires that do not have the peaked mountain with snowflake symbol, may provide safe performance in most weather conditions, but are not designed for snow and ice-covered roads.”

Oh really, Transport Canada? Snow is worse than mud? Ever get mud on you? It sticks. There might even be dog poop in it. You have to wash it off – with soap! Meanwhile, snow comes in lovely flakes (no two are alike) and it melts away into water (which if you were really thirsty, you could drink). So, nice try, but I’m not buying it. Any tire that can handle mud can handle a bit of nice fluffy snow.

And then there’s the other old saw: even if there’s no snow, the cold makes it dangerous to ride on all-seasons. Again from Transport Canada, “At temperatures below 7C, standard tires begin to lose elasticity, resulting in reduced traction. Winter tires retain their elasticity to grip at much lower temperatures.”

Whatever.

The best of the bunch is the assertion that “having four matching tires improves vehicle handling, don’t mix tires with different tread patterns, internal construction and size.” Sorry, but this doesn’t make sense. If winter tires are so awesome, then one winter tire (on the rear left) is better than no winter tires at all.

So, nice try, Tire Police, but this is one driver who is going bareback. I’m not falling for your winter-tire-loving propaganda. They may make you safer, they may prevent accidents and save lives, but they cost money and getting them put on is a hassle.

This winter, I’m going to join the legions of all-seasoners. We won’t be bullied. We’re here, our threads are bare and we’re not going anywhere – literally. You’ll find us spun out along the highway and stuck in snowdrifts. If you could call a tow truck, that would be really helpful.

Actually the widest I can safely go on the stock steelies is 155(though there are 165)/80/10 ,
currently on 145/80/10 all seasons. Its not like it's hard to find 10 inch tires..

You can get your basic all season Falken (1st, what I've got atm) or some nice Yokohamas (2nd)

Rental car companies in the lower mainland do not carry vehicles with snow tires.

I worked for a big local car rental company and we had maybe ~5 vehicles equipped with snow tires out of a fleet of a couple thousand lol, but you couldn't reserve one directly. 80-90% of vehicles are leased, and as such, the company can't change the tires so you get the all seasons the vehicles shipped from the manufacturer with.

Car rental companies in the interior/up north do have mandatory snow tires though. If you rent in kelowna/kamloops there's a good chance you can get a car with snow tires, but other than that slim to none.

So what tire pressure is everyone going in with on winters ? Do we follow the pressure 'suggestions' on our door jam?

Matsuda

I did 35psi all around

inv4zn

My car says 32psi in front, 29 in back.

I put 34 and 31, respectively.

Spectre_Cdn
11-20-2012, 05:37 PM
Door jam recommends 30 front/29 rear

I put in 32 front/31 rear.

When the temperature drops, the air pressure will drop to recommended. And iirc, it's better to have lower pressure when there's snow on the ground.

i think it depends? on direct snow im guessing its better? and u waste little to no tread. did u downsize tires etc etc

Tires are same size, if not ever so slightly bigger cause my summers are worn and the winters are brand new.

Is anyone noticing a drop in fuel economy with winter tires on?

I got a set last week (Cooper Weathermaster A/T) and I've gotten a consistent 50km less per tank. From 13L/100km to 14.8L/100km.

Is this normal? Or should I be looking for something else.

It may not necessarily be your tires. Colder temperatures mean that cars stay in open loop (warm up mode) longer, which causes an engine to use more fuel in order to warm up.

alcoolaid

Not just warm up too. Colder IAT's = use more all the time gas (IAT compensation).

Xi3 went on last week.
I had a 3 year old set of Xi2, but one of the tires had sidewall damage. I, originally, bought them at Costco, but they didn't have any Xi2's, so they replaced all 4 tires with Xi3, and I only had to pay $100 for the tread I used on the Xi2's. I love Costco, and warranties.

Does the ICBC regulations apply to all seasons also?

Expensive
Mounting
Balancing
Storage
Short tread life
Mild winters
Roads are always plowed
Shitty handling in the rain
Less fuel efficient

Just because it's "warm" right now doesn't mean it will stay warm until summer. Virtually every year we seem to follow a similar pattern: snows for a few days in December, warms up in January, then cools back down again in February.

Remember, snow tires aren't just for snow; they're designed to handle better on cold roads than your standard all-season or summer tires.

The cost of mounting and balancing over two years (swapping back and forth) pays for a set of cheap steelies in and of itself pretty much right away. I picked up a set of Lolvo steelies off Craigslist for The Ford, and it's all good.

@ $80+tax (avg), 2 times/year, it adds up pretty quick. Storage takes the same amount of space, less wear and tear on your rims (mounting, weights and winter conditions) and one can DIY the swap.

Just the time you save, not having to wait at a shop twice a year is worth it.

Indeed. Although my mom pays $60 per season to get her tires stored (summers/winters), so that when she goes in for her biannual maintenance (May/Oct) she can just get everything swapped over.

Winter tires are designed to perform better than all-seasons both in snow and at low temperatures. There may have only been a few days of snow, but there were many cold days where they were the optimal choice for conditions.

Calling winter tires, snow tires, creates a misnomer.
