I think IF the PS4 gets released around the same time as the next Microsoft console, they'll have to have a more comparable price. Paying an extra 200$ for a system that had very few games back when the PS3 came out was difficult compared to the Xbox360's release.

That being said, though, I'm still curious to see what it's about. As long as it's not another gimmick the like Move.

Then the PS4 will probably be 4K capable even 4K gaming capable, which means intense specs and so intense price even if sold at a loss that's why I think it'll be closer to that $1000 price point

I actually got my PS1 and PS2 at launch. I was spoiled and got them as gifts from my dad. Now that I'm old and have to buy my own stuff, I'm a cheap bastard. I just bought myself a PS3 last year and will probably wait a while to get the PS4.

it's believed (at first i thought it was just me) that Sony will include 4K support and if they're going to support 4K gaming and not just video than they're going to need some serious hardware to be supporting gaming at 3840 x 2160 or 4096 x 2160 resolutions then i can't see it being that low in price although that'd be awesome

I'd say majority of the games haven't taped out PS3's capabilities yet...a few of the ps exclusives have

the fact that ps3 was based on the Cell processor made it difficult for developers to code for it though which is why many don't bother to push its hardware

In general all console hardware is holding back software developement because they seriously lack of ram/vram.

XBOX rumored specs are out already, it is almost identical to the PS4 rumored specs. Slightly weaker GPU, but way more memory, and more auxiliary hardware for things like video encoding and kinect features.

I'm hoping it's a 2014 release myself but the chances of it coming out in 2013 are good if Microsoft is also doing a holiday release.

I'm curious how many had 1080p sets in 2005 and 2006? It's irrelevant because I don't think Full HD games came out until 2008...everything else and 95%+ of the games today were/is upscaled.

the touchpad on the vita, is pretty neat.. the uncharted vita game uses it really great and such a wierd simple touch tech, because it looks like a normal plastic

i can picture the touchpad, where the sony logo is sitting can be use for mouse like inputs for browsing on the internet or strategy games

most likely the thing thats sitting behind that ps4 prototype controller is the development kit system

Last June, Sony purchased Gaikai, a company that can stream games — delivering them over the internet in real time from remote servers, by sending compressed video frames. Now, The Wall Street Journal reports what many have suspected for months: Sony will use the service to stream games to the next PlayStation game console, which the company is widely expected to reveal on February 20th. However, according to the publication, Sony won't necessarily use Gaikai to deliver brand-new games. Those will reportedly still be delivered on optical disc. Instead, the next PlayStation will allegedly bring existing PlayStation 3 games to the new system using the streaming technology

Previous generations of PlayStation have offered backward compatibility with games built for previous systems — you could put a PS1 disk in a PS2, for instance, and PS2 games worked in some PS3s — but the next PlayStation is expected to use AMD x86 chips, which wouldn't be compatible with the architecture used in previous systems. By hosting earlier generations of games on servers and streaming them instead, this could be a way to ensure some form of backwards compatibility despite the AMD chips.

Not to turn this into a console war but what do you think it means for the Wii U? I was thinking of picking one up but the current game selection just isn't there.

It seems the PS4 and Xbox 720? will blow it out of the water for specs and abilities. This of course didn't hurt the Wii but that system really came out of left field and the Wii U just hasnt caught on the same way. Frick some people think it's just a new controller for the regular Wii....

No console shown because it's not been finalized yet. Most of the rumors were confirmed, but RAM was doubled. So obviously they are still making changed.

Plus they can go into E3 without MS being able to respond directly with their own changes.

"720" won't "blow it out of the water" in terms of specs at least. If the rumors are just as solid there, it will be almost identical, just with a lot more RAM (though the OS will be a lot bigger so most of it will be used by that rather than games)

I am skeptical about some of the promises they made, and will be writing about it on my site later today.

GPU will be roughly equivalent to a Radeon 7850. At 1080p, expect a lot of current gen games to be run at 60 fps at first, but next gen may be locked at 30 fps.

Those Killzone screenshots have some very nice AA going on, I doubt the 7850 would be running that at 1080p with a playable framerate. Plus the screenshots are in 2048x1152, probably running at 5 fps there on a PC :lawl:

4k content won't be on the ps4 for awhile.....but 100gb Blu-ray will be!...the current max is 50GB but all it needs it a firmware update to read the other layers of data.

obviously 20-40GB+ a game is not ideally for someone with internet cap which is pretty much everyone outside of Asia/Eruope

Im not a fan of downloading games, i like the idea that it saves some space but i can't even find my ps3 game collection most of the time so its not much of a concern

I hate steam since there is more than 1 gamer and computer in my house and even though we want to play different games we can't because steam isn't cool with that -_-

it'll also make bringing a game over to a friends house to play or even lending it to them impossible; which is something i imagine we've all done since we were little kids and if its like the ps3 where i can login onto another ps3 and download the game to it that'll just take forever to start playing

Think of it as the difference between one of those shitty Space-Channel knock-off movies and a real moneymaking blockbuster. The amount of time that it takes to develop models that detailed is astonishing--then remember that they all have to interact with each other in realistic ways.

I remember playing Arkham Asylum and Arkham City and watching the way that they did the combat animations to make them actually look realistic and lifelike and was fucking flabbergasted. It must have taken months and months of not just motion cap, but also planning and programming just to do seamless attack/struck/counter animations. Now remember that at most you had...what, 10 characters? And they were all focused on you.

Now imagine trying to program spontaneous characters in large crowds of 50+ that are all supposed to do their own thing but react to each other and to the environment. Games like that take too long to develop with existing game-development cycles. If you spent the time it takes to do that kind of planning and programming, by the time your game came out it'd be 3 years behind on the technology curve, most likely.

Used game buyers may not yet be the minority... But having drm on disc based games is a good thing in a way. Look at what it did for pc gaming. NOBODY buys games on disc anymore. And because of that, we see crazy price drops and sales all the time.mevery week there is a new sale on steam, new humble bundles, etc. then look at iOS where there are games that go on sale for $1 or even free for a period if time. You never see steam or iOS gamers complaining about this, nor the lack of being able to sell their games.

This can only be done if games are not disc based. Microsoft is essentially turning discs into a means of content delivery. They only exist as an alternative to a big download. Since they basically turned into steam on consoles, I would expect similar strategies to occur.

I suppose ps4 could do the same thing with downloadable games anyway... In that case the disc and used games would die a slower death on that side.

Microsoft really just made it too easy for Sony to not capitalize on the whole DRM thing. Honestly nothing they showed in their press conference wowed me, but all anyone took away from it was "you can buy used games, and don't need an Internet connection". Who knows what will happen, XBox still has their core fans who will buy it just because it says XBox on it, plus all the people who don't read shit online and have no idea what the fuck is going on.

There will be lots of people who won't realize they can't borrow a game until they already bought the damn thing.

well the standards for delivering 4K hasn't been finalized but its assumed that it will be BDXL and the new h.265? codec it would be nice if the bd drive in the ps4 supports BDXL wish they would indicate that in the stats -_-

I was hoping to hear them talk about 4K content but ah well they have said they're planning on streaming 4K content initially probably because it will be an extremely niche product at first since 4K sets are $$$$$

I've mentioned more than once that I wasn't bagging specifically on DRM, it was the whole shitlist basically I spoke against, the concept of invasion of privacy, restrictive rules that limit what is and has been the norm for a long time, that's what people are pissed off about.... yet you keep going back and forth with me about DRM

The bare bones of my argument even in the Xbox thread was companies switching up the basics from working in the way they have in the past, and on top of that bringing up other other issues to do with things like privacy etc.... all of these companies like Apple, Google, etc.. have been in hot water for it.... No it's not "pretty much" like PS3. Or it is. We don't know. It's possible that since Sony isn't doing the integrated used game blocking Microsoft is doing that they will employ it themselves... we have seen 'online passes' being sold before, but they could just as easily make it a "used game pass" and add a fee to every used game sold just like on the Xbox One. Sony said that all you have to do is give your game to your friend.. well that is with THEIR games. Now they are saying publishers can set their own policies...

MS made it easier for publishers to set policies, while Sony is basically allowing them to do the same while keeping their hands clean for the vocal internet people.

And BTW if this happens, instead of relying on a huge network run by the biggest company in the world, you are relying on publisher servers who seem to be dropping like flies lately.. The funny thing I have been noticing about the reaction to microsoft's DRM is "what if my internet goes down". Yeah how often does that happen? And when it does, you just happen to need to play a game within the next day? What you SHOULD be worries about is THEIR internet going down. Like if Valve ever decides to pull the plug on Steam, and your entire library disappears... That is the shit you should be worried about, not your own little world of not being able to play games for a few hours because your Shaw connection fucked up over night.

Amyway, we just don't know anything for sure yet, so I wouldn't assume either way. The only thing I do know is that publishers are greedy cunts

It seems like Microsoft went above and beyond what they had to do to satisfy publishers. Online checks every hour when you play your profile at a friends house is a bit much, as if the 24 hour checks at home wasn't bad enough. If you install a game on your system right from the online store why can't you play it if your Internet connection goes to shit or you take it up to your cabin for the weekend? Microsoft made it seem like it was all in the hands of the publishers as well, yet designed this online check bullshit themselves.

It's true we don't know the full extent of Sony's DRM crap but I'm willing to bet it's not quite as far as MS went about it.

but the 24 hour online authentication is checked by the publishers and not by MS itself?

Steam isn't going away. I'm worried my handful of game on Ubisoft's DRM client may slip away.

If backwards compatibility ever happens, it'll be through Gaikai. Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be happening until some time next year, and even then who knows what the service will be.

It works theoretically, but who knows... They would need several farms of original PS3 hardware to run all the old games :lawl:
