I still got season 1 burned in one my backup dvd's. hahaha.
Too bad Good Charlotte never really played that theme song anymore when they started to become famous.
This thread got me watching undergrads again. I remember back then it was funny even though I didn't fully grasp what was going on and the stereotypes. It seems a lot funnier now on a different level.

I'm trying to remember if I was nostalgic about things when I was 20... Actually back then is when Hot Topic and places like that started selling 80's cartoon themed stuff, so maybe I was.
This may be extremely obscure but does anyone remember these skits that aired on KSTW? They would air before and after a show but also during commercial breaks.
Rosco, Ronnie and Ranger Charlie
There were two Ranger Charlies, a man and then a woman. The man has since passed away. Ronnie is actually MJ McDermott who is currently on Q13 Fox News. The things I learn.

Kids still use these except they don't buy Razors anymore they buy scooters that are expensive compared to what the Razors cost. It's kind of the like Skateboard & BMX craze in the 80's except scooters. They take them to the skate parks and do tricks with them.

AllAdvantage was the shit back in the day. Set up some sort of script or macro to have your mouse just randomly move all over while you turned your monitor off and went to school.
I used NetZero for free 56k dial-up exclusively until grade 10 or 11. The worst was when you went to GeoCities to look at porn pics and then your internet would cut out because your parents picked up the phone to dial out.

I remember staying up late to watch it for its cable premier on Showcase - remember when they actually showed indie/foreign films full of nudity?
My sister's grade 9 English class was made to watch it (1996-97). The teacher was always touchy-feely (hands on shoulders stuff), insisted kids play with his pet snakes (another way to make physical contact with students) and always on the edge of inappropriate. A year or two later students finally accused him of sexual harrassment. I can't recall what happened with that.
Great film, but it always reminds me of that teacher.

Is that the 128MB MP3 player that Telus was giving as a promo if you signed up for their internet? I remember it because one of their reps called my house mid-week during summer break, my brother answered assuming it was my parents but since it was some random person asking for my mom he just handed it to me. The guy flew into his pitch and kept rambling on, I didn't care about the MP3 player since I'd just gotten a minidisc player so I just kept saying "mhmm" and "yeah" every so often til he finally hung up. A few weeks later a box showed up at our door with a modem and one of those MP3 players, it turns out somehow I'd signed us up for internet and Telus added it to our phone bill. My mom was not amused and someone at Telus got an earful :lol

It was sad when Speed TV took over. There was a group of us who used to hit up a pub in Walnut Grove to watch JGTC races, fuzebox, zulu, and others. Speedvision used to have a half hour program devoted to the week's races and it was awesome to watch while we played pool.
Then Speed took over and took away all of the unique broadcasting, replacing it with Nascar 24/7.
Then the pub closed down.....

The new entertainment options planned for the redeveloped Brentwood Town Centre shopping mall, now known as ‘The Amazing Brentwood’, could rival those currently found at Metropolis at Metrotown.
In fact, it could even provide a throwback to those who remember Metrotown’s Playdium, which was shut in 2005 and replaced with a Winners.
Cineplex has announced that it will build a massive 64,700 ft² entertainment centre at the top level of the expanded shopping mall complex that will include a VIP cinema with five auditoriums and a special lounge area.
There will also be a massive ‘Rec Room’ with over 100 arcade games and simulators, a bowling alley, and dining options including an upscale restaurant and sports bar.

Yup, on rare nights where I'd be up really late. Later on it was (I believe) Crockett wrestling or NWA, not sure. I just remember it being so different from the WWF I always watched. More 'adult'. And then there was Stampede Wrestling which I could sometimes catch on Saturday or Sunday afternoons.

I most definitely had that exact pair. I loved BK's back then. Had a full track suit to match. Track suits were huge back then. Troop, BK, Cross Colors, etc.
LOL at the purple gang. I remember the PD's (Filipino Descendants, FD sounds lame I guess) had some purple ties in Richmond back then. Richmond Centre food court was wild and hectic at lunch time. They rolled in mega numbers though.
I had all those shoes growing up. LA Gear, BK, Reebok Pumps, Chuck Taylors etc.

i heard black markets in china use to sell of movies in VCD format just in theaters with relatively good clarity, someone would just walk in,sell it and go on.
known fact in the early 2000's,Canada use to be a leader in Clearly recorded bootleg movies because they would use a Tripod inside the movie theater.
enough so Hollywood threatened to release movies months later if it doesn't stop happening,There wasn't any Laws for bringing in video recording equipment inside at the time.
Asia was ahead of the curve on VCD players, later brands like Sony started supporting VCD & No One Had a damn clue what it was till later here in north america....DVD's were selling huge here ..i remember everyone purchasing day 1 releases cause it was so much better picture & sound than vcr tapes.....optical 5.1 and dts 5.1 was godsend

Christmas as a kid. I miss it :crybaby:
Favourite was in 1992 when I was hoping for a SNES bundled with Super Mario World & TWO controllers. I didn't have a NES so I never played Mario Bros 3 which means you can imagine my level of happiness and shock playing SMW for the first time. Only ever experienced it watching others play it at Phantasy Video Games out in Coquitlam.
That Christmas Eve was the only night I didn't sleep a whole wink. Way too excited.
We didn't have a lot of money but after working hard in school, I was rewarded with this.

Nice man. My Christmas in 1992 was similar, but we were even poorer, so our gift was to rent a SNES for the holiday. I didn't mind one bit, it was the best few days of my memory, playing through SMBW with its amazing sounds and graphics. Discovering secrets everywhere, etc. I will never forget those few days!

I gave my buddy a ride home with my ATV. Ripping down a major road with him on a sled behind me. At one point we passed a Hydro truck, the only other vehicle on the road.

Was this around New Years Eve? We got the snow, which we were used to, but New Years Eve we got walloped by freezing rain up in Kamloops. Everything was coated in nearly 2 inches of ice. My dad couldn't get the car up our very steep driveway and was really not wanting to park it on the street, also very steep, because it was quickly turning into a parking lot of crunched vehicles. I believe the ice was also responsible for causing a massive fire at a hotel which was under construction at the time.
Last night I decided to relive my Elementary school days and eat a crunched up bag of raw Ichiban with the powder sauce - living that bachelor life, what can I say. Everyone seemed to bring those for lunch for a year or two in the early 90's until they were banned by the school because of the mess they made in the classroom.

Earlier in the year when I was doing some house cleaning, I came across a bunch of old VCDs. Threw one into the PC's DVD drive, and fired up VLC to play it. Holy OMG... the resolution was so bad that I don't know how anyone (my old self included) could ever make any detail out of the picture.
And then the video compression technology back then was pretty bad too. You can literally see all the image artifacts from the video compression blurring things out, but in an ugly, large, blocky way. FailFish
(And I know I watched a gob ton of those VCDs back in the day...)

I was one of the few who always thought it was bad... I didn't understand how any of my asian friends could stand watching them LUL
It wasn't as bad back then though, because you were watching them on low res screens... Like a normal NTSC or PAL TV was the equivalent 440P or 520P. VCDs were half of that each, and SVCD were full res, so obviously still very low, but not as bad as trying to watch them on your 1080p or 4K monitor today 4Head )

I think their Tuesday Specials are now like $3.49? The pieces are a bit smaller, but I think they still taste the same as before? or at least, it is similar enough that I wouldn't complain about the taste.

I can't remember if they call it "extra crispy" or "extra spicy", but they use a crispy batter on it, and it is not bad. I still like the original better though.
I usually go to the ones on Kingsway between Nanaimo and Victoria, and the one on Kingsway next to Burnaby NCIX (now Canada Computers). The cashier always asks whether I want original or crispy.

A lot more trees now than 30 years ago, but trade off is the high-density housing (skyscrapers) and some areas there's like zero view from the Skytrain where there was an amazing view before.
My old place on Prenter St (just after Edmonds station) looked completely empty in 1990 and completely overgrown in 2020. We used to be able to see the Skytrain from our apartment, but doesn't look like that's the case anymore.

of it is a lot more trees i noticed too, but i'm willing to bet not that many. a lot of the trees have just grown fuller over 30 years.
old neighbourhood in van I could look over and see the roads, english bay and down town over a stretch of 3 blocks about 150-200m away. but the same trees now, have completely blocked any light coming from that direction. and have grown tall enough to block the mountains from the skyline.

One year we finally got some. Corded. They went so slow and you had to follow them around. Also the one my brother got didn't even have a steer function, to make it turn, you had to go in reverse which would turn the wheels left to get around obstacles.

Mostly though it was lego for me. The sets didn't stay together for long, I had much more fun modding out my own custom builds. Long before lego launched all of their new themes, I'd turned all of my Space toys into underwater vehicles after watching The Abyss.
I remember replicating "The Abyss" too. Except we used GI Joes instead of Legos. We didn't have the giant vehicles, so our aircraft carrier was mom's ironing board LUL
They'd all be preparing up on the ironing board to dive to the bottom, where we'd set up blankets so they'd have caves to explore at the bottom of the sea
Life as a poor kid LUL
I only got one single gift per year in my childhood and I thought that was normal because poverty. Needless to say, New Bright was all I ever asked for whenever I walked through Toy City with one choice of toy to have Santa bring me. Was probably there for at least an hour trying to pick.

And I still have this:

With a remote control that looked exactly like a TV remote. This is my favourite toy I got in my early years. The siren was so loud, I blew the speaker on day 1. I wish it wasn't on a leash but oh well. Takes 6 D cell batteries though.
My brother was pretty big into rc's when we were kids. He progressed to gas powered pretty quick. But I still remember the first one he brought home. The Tamiya Grasshopper.

Back when Westwood Mall was a.....mall, there was an RC / Hobby shop over there and the guy had a very nice electric train display with village, mountains, cars etc.
He also had a Vanessa's Lunch Box brand new in box and ready to be painted. I wanted that thing so bad and it was always there. Eventually it was gone and as much as I still want one, their prices are way beyond what I'm willing to spend.

This takes me way back, 87 was probably the year I quit RC. When I was really living it we were racing locally and in bellingham, I even have me in a pic of competition plus magazine.
All my favourite stuff is long gone. I still have a kyosho ultima pro, parts or 2 turbo optimas, parts of a yokomo dogfighter and a severely thrashed PB mini mustang 2 speed.
I got the 2wd ultima running 2 years ago with modern electronics, maybe one day I'll build a track in the back yard.

A friend brought up old sporting good stores and it got me thinking about a few from 96-99 that I can't seem to remember. Hopefully someone here can help me remember lol
It was Metrotown, on the (current) food court side. Lower floor by Oak+Fort IIRC. It was a sporting good store I think that had some pre-owned items as well. I bought some used Bauer inline skates there.
Any ideas? The word "frugal"-something comes to mind but I can't quite remember.

Yup. Frugal Feet. I believe they were a subsidiary of Shoe Strings, across the street on Kingsway.

Speaking of old chips, I am not sure if I am just taking crazy pills or it's the Berenstain Bears effect (https://www.seventeen.com/celebrity/news/a32934/the-berenstein-berenstain-bears-conspiracy-theory/), but does anybody remember a chip snack called Drive Thru?
From what I remember, they are french-fry shaped chips that came from bags (e.g. like you'd see in vending machines). I remember them back around 1998 or 1999.
They came in barbecue and all dressed flavour, and the all-dressed flavour came in a blue bag with yellow/orange accents.
I've searched all over google for this in the past, and just asked a few of my high school friends and they don't remember it.
Did I just dream of this chip?
That’s like the Garlic Shoestring Potato Chips. Nobody remembers them. Small bags. I believe Old Dutch made them.

I can't recall that particular chip
Crank it back a few years and the chips I remember was called ThunderCrunch, one of the best kettle chips during those times.

Thunder Crunch (originally owned by Nally's) was bought by Old Dutch and as part of the acquisition, Old Dutch rebranded them to Dutch Crunch. They still own and hold the copy right to the brand. I think you can find the radio interview from a radio station in Calgary which interviewed the CEO of Old Dutch, they go into some good detail behind the consolidation and re-brand.

Disneyland is pretty great
I like Star Wars and some Marvel characters, and old Disney stuff, but I don't know if I'm a big enough fan to enjoy Disneyland... I just can't get into things the same way anymore, maybe I am too old and bitter now :okay:
But if it's really that great maybe I should check it out
