The Nostalgia Thread
A thread where we can share stories that pertain to our upbringing in the Lower Mainland. Some stories may involve places or people that are still around or have evaporated into the ether.
I'll share one.
It was the mid 80s and I was 6 years old. My uncle drove his 81 El Camino from San Francisco to my parent's house in Coquitlam for a visit. He traveled with his son (my cousin).
He decided to take my brother, my cousin and I to Flintstones Bedrock City. He told us all to climb into the bed of his El Camino. It had a windowed canopy and a mattress. Because we were all so young and small, we climbed into the back with ease and enjoyed a hell of a trip from here to the Park playing lots of games and laughed like children do. We even saw some cops on the highway through the window but they didn't seem to notice or care.
I don't remember much at the park itself other than being on the row boats. I was a shit poor rower and dragged my paddle across the water and into the boat, soaking my uncle completely in water. He could only laugh.
The drive back was just as much fun as the drive there. Flintstones Park was definitely an attraction to admire as a child. By the time Dinotown took over, I was older and had moved on.
I was thinking of posting this thread a couple of weeks ago but didn't. By sheer coincidence, I found out yesterday that said Uncle is now in a care home and diagnosed with the initial stages of dementia. He remembered the 'splashing incident' for well over 25 years. Now, it's hard to say if he will again...
Anyway, does anyone want to share a story?

Glen Dr. near Coquitlam Centre is completely unrecognizable from 10 years ago. I remember when it was just a bunch of tall trees overshadowing a few houses buried within. Glen School looked more like a cabin and most of the population immigrated the proper way :fuckthatshit:
My friends and I used to hang around all the random forested areas when we were younger. Get involved in plenty of shenanigans without getting caught.
Also the old racetrack at Pinetrree. I remember hearing the cars but never being allowed to go there. Then it closed.

I remember when some friends and I went for a buddy's birthday. Showergirl found this out and gave him her wet soapy thong. He didn't know what to do with it, lol.
Also, you know you're old when you remember the Woodward's Food Floor at Coquitlam Centre back when it had its elaborate car port for pick ups and drop offs. Also you remember that the Sunwood Square Safeway used to be in Westwood Mall where The Brick now sits.

You're probably the only person I've ever hear talk about the laser tag in guildford. Grew up in Fraser heights so relatively close to guildford and none of my friends remember it. It was where the dollar store is now, and had the blow up walls etc lol
Dark zone also had those shaking rooms you stepped in before they released you into the arena lpl

My family came here in 1974 so this is very relevant. Their very first home was an apartment on Victoria Dr. (the brown section) above a store. They told me it was VERY different back then. It was pretty quiet and people actually talked to each other.
Their first car was a 1975 Chevy Vega that puffed blue smoke when they were leaving the dealer lot :lawl:
I never went to the Steel Monkey in Coquitlam but I remember going past it everyday wondering what went on in that building.

The Marble Arch:
So back in the late 90's my cousin had recently moved from Edmonton and my friend and I wanted to show him a good time. Middle of the day on a Saturday let's hit up the Arch and get drunk and see where it takes us. Wicked! So off we go. Get a nice table somewhat close to the stage and begin drinking. Several hours pass and it's time for the main event. Turns out it's some hottie from the UK that brings toys and does full peno for the crowd. Fuck me, I'm stoked to see this. We're pretty hammered now so spirits are high. So she does her thing for a couple songs and minds were blown.
Then she asks for a volunteer. Being the loudest table I'm nominated to go up on stage. Crowds cheering, I'm loving it. She's gives me a water gun and I'm, well, spraying her down. Crowds cheering, friends are laughing, and I'm feeling like the fucking man. Then she informs me that I need to pull my pants down so she can return the favor. I'm drunk so of course I'm not shy at all. Haha. I proceed to drop my drawers and now I'm standing in my boxers with my pants at my ankles. She puts my boxers in a g-string up my butt crack and proceeds to sprays me down. Crowd is loving it, I'm so stoked right now. My hands are up hyping the crowd and everything. Then she turns me around and starts writing on my ass with a sharpie. I'm thinking she's giving me an autograph so I'm all cheering, pointing at it, sticking my tongue out like a champ and laughing; and the crowd is in hysterics. The shows ends, she hugs me and I get a standing ovation.
She sat with us at our table for a drink afterwards and gave me a signed poster. We continue on with our evening getting drunker and my cousin and friend can't stop laughing about what had happened. I'm thinking shit, it was cool but not that funny. We get home later, I'm living at 33rd and Victoria at the time, and settle in for our night cap blaze session and I go into the bathroom to check out the signature.
Turns out she wrote "ENTER PENIS HERE" with huge arrows pointing accordingly
I'm ain't even mad. That story came up at my wedding and is still discussed to this day. I'm miss that place.

Metrotown before the renovation, where the shops around the bay, where the current food court is were a dead zone. I still remember exactly how it used to look before the reno, and where all the shops were, the walkway in between the two malls used to be sooo crazy! , I remember once someone sprayed pepperspray in it, it was so bad everyone was coughing and shit and trying to run out. It's crazy. Then during the reno, and then when metropolis area was opened up, it was the shit!
So many cool stores, just things to go look at and hang out at. Friends that worked at Playdium used to give us free play passes and such. it was a blast. Used to have those weekend marathon passes where it would be open 24 hours for the entire weekend. Glow store, Millenium (pre goth), Superstar, Playdium, The slurpee place with sooooooo many flavors.

LOL, we used to go there when we were in Grade 12 with fake ID back in the early 90's. We went so much they stopped IDing us, we'd bring back those little pamphlets they handed out with the girls performing and put them up on the bulletin board in our woodworking class. I loved Highway 86. Never really understood the design at the time (some parts of the road were broken off and other parts had some vehicles submerged underwater) but the detail in the artwork was top notch.

A bunch of childhood hangouts have already been mentioned.. I remember checking out chicks and eating shitty pizza at Stardust while listening to Ice Ice Baby. Damn that shit was dope.
Ozone, Delanies.. I used to get in there when I was underage as well using my brother's ID. I must have looked 12 but still got in. Muggs & Jugs.. my first apartment was right in the area and my now-wife and I used to regularly go there in the summer for the AC and a quick beer before trying to fall asleep in our hot ass apartment.
Daily street hockey, Bart Simpsons indoor mini golf, mountain biking pretty much every day through Delta watershed, building a bunch of tree forts in the forest around my house only to watch them slowly get taken down one by one for stucco houses :okay:
Finding porn in said forests.. I used to find porn everywhere it seemed. Looking back I suppose dudes would buy them and be too afraid to bring them home and just chuck them out the window.. alas the internet has robbed today's youth of such boner inducing discoveries.
Cash too.. for some reason I would find 1's and 2's, sometimes the odd 5 on the street or parking lot. I guess debit, loonies and twoonies have reduced the odds of finding cash blowing down the sidewalk.
A lot of my memories are a result of being outside all day every day when I wasn't in school. It was safe enough that when I was 7, my brother who was 9 and I would be out on our Norco scooters in Ladner where my grandparents lived and roam around all day until we were hungry. To the public pool for a swim, to the city centre, to the slough to try and see fish. Wherever we wanted, whenever we wanted we could go it seemed. I now have a 7 year old daughter and she doesn't leave my sight in our neighbourhood and it is a safe one.. times have changed!

Also arcades hell yeah! When I lived in Regina is was place called "Guys and Dolls" had to walk about an hour to get there but so worth it.
When I moved here it was Bumble Bee on Scott Road, same thing used to walk there. When I went to Jr. High School we'd walk over on our lunch hour many of days from LA Matheson. I had my mom convinced from grade 8 on that every kid got lunch money and bought lunch so she we give me money everyday that I'd blow at the arcade and 711 before they tore it down. Another good memory is getting ice cream at a place called The Milkyway, it's still there to this day and looks the same as it did 30 years ago, in the summer this place is so packed it's like a family tradition to go there. I actually took my niece there last time I was in town.

Great memories in here. I've mentioned most in the "you're old enough to remember" thread but fuck it..........
I swear A&B Sound invented the boxing Day concept. Lost leader camp-out-side-for-two-days-for-the-$10-DVD-player type shit. Hilarious stuff. Definitely the go-to place for CD's though.
Lazer Illusions and Johnny Zee's. EPIC times in both places. Way back was Dragon's Liar, Time Traveller, Chelnov, Hard Drivin', etc. Then came SF2 and holy fuck was that a game changer(or life ender depending on how you look at it). Learning Guile's invisible throw early on helped my hustle pretty good. The amount of hours spent on just the arcade version before it dropped for SNES was staggering.
Willow Video Games in Richmond was a place I frequented. Video games were like crack for me as a kid. I can't believe I've been down since the Atari 2600 :P
The mutha fucking Richmond Skate Ranch. goddamn that place was awesome. Skating in the 80's was such a great time.

My favorite place at Champlain was Toys and Wheels and Radio Shack. I'd go and play with all the magic illusion stuff, and fantasize about the Transformers I wanted. And, every month, my dad would get his free 9V battery from Radio Shack battery club, while I checked to see if there was a game being demoed on their Tandy that I could play.
I also remember my parents buying an Omnibot (http://www.theoldrobots.com/images30/omnibot44.JPG), on clearance, from the Bay's toy department! I was trying to convince them of all the cool things that thing did. haha.

I grew up on the North Shore, North and West Van so I remember:
-Park Royal Bowling Lanes, with the sweet arcade...would rush there after school and line my quarters up on Mortal Kombat 2, like this:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bJyWYUqGoiE/TpIJwWve31I/AAAAAAAAA7s/_x_jmoaujs8/s1600/DSC02556.JPG
- Park Royal Driving Range: Would go there after dinner and hit balls any time of the year (the best was when the ground was frozen, your ball would bounce so far!)
- Adventure Playground: Located in Ambleside and we would spend the summer building a sweet fort, then you get to sleepover in it!
- Park Royal Theatre: I saw Batman Returns on a preview night by chance on the Thursday before it opened Friday. Went to school the next day and no one believed I saw it.
- Lighthouse Park camps: They had the longest zip line ever, and of course you didn't use a helmet or get strapped in
- Timmy Ho's on Marine in North Van: Next to what was forever Burger King, it was the only thing open on the North Shore past midnight. All the rich kids showed up in their fancy cars their daddy's bought them.
Anyone else from the North Shore have memories?

I have such great memories from that Chuck E Cheeses in Burnaby/Coquitlam. X-men arcade game, The Michael Jackson game (Moon walker?), and the ball pit (probably was one of the best ones in the lower mainland).
Does anyone remember that ping pong ball game where you toss it into open trash cans to win tickets? When you got old enough, you could easily reach far enough to drop them in :)
I remember those games and the Simpsons one! That place was literally the best place ever when I was a kid. I accumulated so many tickets and then they suddenly closed down one day and my HUGEEEE stash of tickets became useless :okay:

Threads that tap into past are gold. There's a lot of good things that I haven't thought about in a long time, or just forgotten, and this is a great reminder of times gone by. Thanks for helping me remember those valuable times with family, and all the things in the past that I have taken for granted.

and then returning to blockbusters 20 minutes later to exchange the movie since the vhs tape you rented doesn't work and is all scratched up and wont play cause it jams up non stop.
i was young, but i remember going to brentwood mall with my mom and dad and brother in the early 90's because i knew going to the mall meant they'd visit eatons, and they had an awesome candy booth in the middle of the store. always got candy from them. :D
how about those super screaming sour candy things?(similar to warheads) came in a container like the icebreaker sour things....the lid would be a small frisbee at the end..think the candy caused a lot of health problems so they took it away...i wish i knew the name
early 90's, my dad had a baby blue station wagon with rear facing seats...fucking loved that thing as a kid(i was maybe 5 or 6 at the time)...slide the back window down and id just sit there and wave to every car behind us
cant forget these bad boys...my first pair of blades

Blockbuster was such an archaic, poorly run company, that it's amazing they lasted as long as they did. I remember writing to them about their poor DVD selection, and they kept arguing that renters don't want DVDs, only collectors. People who rent only want VHS, and they don't want widescreen either. Even without knowing how much things would change, I could tell that it was only a matter of time that they die off. Of course they got DVDs eventually, but man that was pretty eye opening.

Oh man, the old Champlain Mall. Lots of memories going there because of the BMO and a family doctor we used to visit. I used to LOVE going down that flight of stairs to the lower floor.
Just randomly remembered the old chain stores such as Field's, Woolco and Woolworth's.
Also anyone remember the old days of video gaming where if you needed tips, tricks and hints you had to call a number? And there were typically long distance charges added on?

I grew up in north van. First memory, and probably one that changed my life, taking the bus to consumer distributors on marine (next to BK) and asking my brother what he purchased: the original NES. Had no idea what it was but did I ever love it.
Going to Woolco with my parents at cap mall (where Walmart is now). Also, going to sears and buying as many Pavel Bure cards as I could at Mr C's card shop.
Cheap movie nights @ esplanade and park and tilford theaters.
Ambelside seawall before the storm demolished it
The save on at park and tilford had a video rental system, and I'd always look at the Sega master system game cartridges
Using the internet for the very first time at the north van library. I'd always rush so I can book the slotted one hour time slot, and I'd go on Talkcity and created my first email account
Winning a super Nintendo system at crazy mikes video rental through a ballot system..rogers eventually set up shop and took em out

Oh fuck yes!
Also I remember when these came out
McDonald's Garfield Christmas Plush Toys commercial (1991) - YouTube
When my dad didn't want to bother buying one for me, I went and asked my uncle. He spoiled me rotten and said yes right away. The only drawback was that he got to choose which one. He chose the Santa Garfield which is the one I wanted anyway.
He died in 1997 and I've kept everything he ever gave me including the Garfield plushie. It sits on my high top dresser.
I don't know if anyone remembers these commercials that ran in the mid to late 90s every Christmas time?
One Little Candle McDonalds Commercial - Nestor Elementary - YouTube
It was a contest put on by McDonald's between the schools. The group performing that song won first place. My class (Grade 6 at the same school) won 2nd place and our prize was a trip down to the 99.3 The Fox / LG73 studio where we got to record our song live to tape where it would be played on the airwaves throughout the holiday season. It was fucking incredible

The tall blue plastic cups from Domo gas station. I still use them to this day. A bit scratched up, but good cups. Made by Bowrings, I believe. I have like two dozen or more, LOL.
I have about a dozen still in wrappers, but haven't needed to replace any of the old ones. Should have got the matching pitcher when they had them. Come to think of it, do they still give these out? I haven't been to a Domo gas station in close to twenty years.

Those are some good ones. I definitely remember going to Consumers Distributors and looking at their game collection; I also remember buying MASK toys there, they had a good collection (still my favourite toys of all time)
I remember lining up for hours to see movies at Esplanade 6 or Park and Tilford, including skipping school to line up and see Star Wars: Episode 1. My teacher who I really liked found out, and I felt really bad, and the film was terrible too of course.
I took Taekwondo classes on Lower Lonsdale, and there used to be a pretty sweet arcade a couple blocks up, I would kill time there. Then I'd pop in to Big Pete's comic shop, before he moved across the street. :fullofwin:
There were a couple video game stores on Marine too, I forget the names of both of them...but one was owned and operated by a BC Lion, the huge friendly black guy. The other was near where Marine splits off to Fell and 3rd, across from the now Kia dealership. I remember preordering Mortal Kombat 2 on SNES and rushing there after school to buy it. So awesome.

If people need to dump stuff, they should just haul it to the dump. Some people just don't realize they're not doing anyone any favors by dumping their crappy couch at the thrift store. However, small stuff like glassware is always saleable.

i always had issues with recording mini discs because i never allowed it to record silently. Sometimes in the background of the music you would hear a windows chime or an ICQ uh oh. Felt worse than recording music on a cassette tape.

lol minidisc.. all the asian kids in school had those... copying tapes was still better, or even burning CD's. I used to sell mix CD's because back then it was rare to have a burner

Does anyone remember the name of the video game store that used to be in Coquitlam Centre where the Rogers Cellphone store currently is? I remember buying Lethal Enforcers from there (SNES). It came with the gun and made for some fun times. It was also the first place I played Stunt Race FX and it was the course with the underwater tunnel and the halfpipe section you could drive over and fall in the water for instadeath.
Speaking of old video games, is anyone else keeping their old stock? Ever since my suicidal regret of selling my SNES with mint FFIII & Chrono Trigger games, I've kept everything I bought since then. Some of what I own is rising in value. I own Mario Party III for the N64 and some auctions are hitting triple digits. I'm hoping games like Rage Racer and Super Puzzle Fighter (both for PS1) rise in value.
:ilied: my old video games are my only investment.

LOL at the MD players. Us white kids didn't have no shit like that. haha. Anyone remember DAT players? I remember my neighbor's buddy had one in his CRX in like 1989ish. I was like WTF is that? and apparently it was "digital" quality sound or something. Blew my mind back then.
Hoping anyone on here(from Richmond) remembers a white EF hatch with the plate "ungobox" or something. Dumped on Si alloys with an Ungo alarm and a killer system and no tint. Super fishbowl. I have been curious about this for years, but does anybody remember a particular potato chip/snack back in 2003/2004 or so that were shaped like fries and came in all dressed and I think salt and vinegar (or BBQ?) flavours? The all dressed was in a blue bag and the other was in a red bag.
They MIGHT have been called 'Drive Thru'. I remember getting them in early high school, then one year I went to the vending machine craving them and they were nowhere to be found, and have never been seen since.
I have thought about these chips several times over the years, and have googled and googled to no results to the point where I am curious if I imagined these chips.

I distinctly remember eating a bowl of chocolate ice cream cones cereal as a kid. It wasn't available for long, but just a limited time only thing. This was sometime in the 80's in Saskatchewan
Same with Mr. T cereal, had it too

Begged for one of these until my uncle gave me one for my birthday. It wasn't the greatest idea strapping that much water to the back of a tiny 9yr old Asian kid.

In the mid-90s, one of my friends brought this to a water fight at QE park. Since the pack is just a reservoir, he just ditched that, and dunked the gun in the fountain to fill it up. That thing was a firehose. The only defense was curling up in a fetal position :)
