only reason why i keep cable is because of live spots and Jeopardy

If somthing like DAZN can pick up all or most of live sports i'd probably drop it.

I've exhausted all options in terms of trying to stream live sporting events, it's just never good enough

With a vpn hot can watch everything on dazn, they got nba/mlb/NHL in Germany, plus some euro soccer and college stuff too

what can you do for those of us with shaw 150 already?

i have that two year locked in price promo

got the blue sky tv for 3 months free but there's no point when you don't get half the channels. only usable part is the VOD

Did you get anything from Shaw on this blkgsr? I'm just starting my 2nd year of the promo and my bill is about $80 more than the promo period. Want to try get it down a bit if I can.

Scored a retention deal with Telus

Fiber 150 + Unlimited download
Basic TV + News package
Land line

All for $102 + tax. Got my first bill, total was $112

Whats the best deal for just internet these days? I'm on Telus, but their pricing sucks. Thinking of switching to TekSavvy

Telus called me to offer a different internet package and I said no and that I was considering switching to shaw.

The CSR immediately offered an internet only Pure Fibre 150 plan for 12 months for $51.74 tax in. I am saving about$47 per month vs my previous unlimited plan. Data cap is 1024 GB per month.

Signed up with a student discount at Shaw.

Internet 150 - 50
Medium TV - 30
Cantonese Pack - 10

Got an additional $10 off for 10 months.

$90 after tax.

Telus is doing fiber in my area now, so I might jump ship if they got a good deal somewhere. Too bad Telus' hotspots are nowhere as good as ShawOpen.

with how bad Dazn is running now I doubt other sports will want to go steaming only or even consider it for a long time...

The price I got was on a 2 year contract so I'm good until Aug 2019. If you have fiber in your area, get it. Even without the new deal, the Fiber 150 was cheaper than Optik 50... That's gotta be a first for Telus, get 3x the speed for less money...

Renewed my Telus contract for 2 years.

Internet 100 (don't have 150 in my area)
Basic TV + 6 packages + Chinese channel

$60 before taxes for 12 months.

(Originally I was aiming for the 2 year contract + New TV Gift), but I received a 'Free' laptop the previous 2 years ago, and that I don't qualify for that promotion anymore :(

Sometimes I see Telus setting up booth in the malls. Those guys are more willing to offer you some discount since they get paid by commission.

i was paying:

cause im sure 10 months ago i signed up for my old plan.

doesnt hurt to call in and ask. i told em i wanted to cancel and they transfered me over to retention's. perhaps pretend you didnt know you were on contract and see what happens. haha what do you got to lose?

good Luck

oh i forgot to mention. on my old plan i was renting 3 Cable Receivers for 25 a month. YIKES!
she threw in 2 "newer gateway" receivers for free with my new plan

Hondaracer
01-30-2018, 05:25 PM
I switched from Shaw to Telus fiber recently, I had a full year left on my Shaw contract, was $250 to buy it out, Telus gave me a $50 credit towards that, plus $100 off first bill plus the free TV (which I would have way rather taken the current promo of the visa GC but oh well)

The fiber is pretty killer, never had a problem with my Shaw 150 however the fiber is noticeably faster and picture seems better (compared to the older gateway system at least)

DavidNguyen

Check your bill. I think it's either 15 or 20 bucks multiply by how many months you got left in your contract

No one has any intel on this service?

I've been Shaw/Telus free for a few years now. Been bumming off my neighbour for $30 a month for a while now. Unfortunetely were both moving haha.

I'd like to try something new, TekSavvy looks like a good option. We only search the internet and probably watch a maximum of 7 hours of netflix a week.

I was on Teksavvy paying $50 for internet 30 with unlimited data but recently switched to Lightspeed because it’s cheaper. Now I’m paying $40 for internet 75 with unlimited data.

When you sign up with Teksavvy, there’s a bigger initial start up cost compared to Lightspeed. Teksavvy is based out of Ontario and customer service is very good. Lightspeed is based out of Burnaby and customer service is not the best.

Hondaracer
01-31-2018, 01:49 PM
Lightspeed is still around eh fuck lol..remember my grandparents used lightspeed for their dial up service back in the day

I work in the industry but honestly dont know how anyone deals with anything less than 75 MBPS down.. HD youtube vids burn up 15-18mbps alone, then you get into 4K content where you're pushing 22+

Teksavvy is a reseller so you won't get a different product than what you'd get from Shaw or Telus. (I'm not sure if that answers your question or not) The only difference will be a cheaper price point and customer service.

As for Shaw contracts, I remember asking them specifically when I signed my contract and you should be able to change services within your plan without incurring a penalty (but you can't cancel obviously). With that said, since they've got you locked in, there's really no incentive to give you any promotional offers so the best you could do is switch to a lower priced service if you just want to save a few $$ off your monthly bill. Certainly doesn't hurt to ask and see what they can offer though.

A while back, got the following loyalty discount on a two year service agreement from TELUS.

- Pure Fibre Optik Internet 150
- Essentials
- Two theme packs
- TMN, HBO, Crave

All in for $47.74

The discounts are for 12 months, so i will need to call back halfway through the service agreement to renew my deal.

Yes! Call em! Say you wanna cancel your cable and apply for Internet 150 cause cable too damn expensive. They will put you on hold then should come back with a nice offer.

I posted this a few post back. They offered me

Internet 150 plus 5 themes pack for 100 a month over 2 years. Internet 150 alone was 100 already.

Once my contract is up. I think I'll just keep the internet.
Streaming is way better. Just gotta teach my parents how to use it.

if anyone's looking to switch over from their current provider to Telus, hit me up, i may be able to get ya a bit better than whats advertised online and you wont have to wait on hold with phone support etc.

Pretty much all of Vancouver and most of Surrey is on fibre now so you can get symetrical 150 up/150 down, while i never had a problem with Shaw 150, the fibre is obviously a superior technology.

Murdoc is in mission so probably doesnt have Fibre yet.

just an FYI for anyone re-upping on a contract, there really is no "rental" fee for modem or the first 2 STB's anymore, both providers give the first 2 boxes for free, sometimes you can squeeze a 3rd out for free but it's not typical.

Again if anyone is switching and considering Telus hit me up and i might be able to squeeze another 20-50 off the best offer

Another thing to note is that Shaw had a booth at PNE last year that had pretty good plans being offered. There hasnt been much luck with saving people money switching to Telus from Shaw recently, however there is a deal ongoing right now that you may be able to save some dough as a student:

"post-secondary students with a valid student ID are eligible for promotional pricing on TELUS Internet for 8 months, with the first month free. No term contract is required. This offer is also stackable with the Pik TV add-on"

Eligible for both fiber and copper services. Internet 25 would probably be about $35 a month on this deal

If anyone is looking for, or just has straight internet with Telus (fiber or not) we have a promotion on right now for our PIK TV, essentially an android box that has a handful of TELUS Optik channels built in of your choice.

You can get HBO, TSN, etc. sales have been shit so were essentially giving it away for free right now, it’s like $20 one time fee for the hardware that’s yours forever, then the service is free for 6 months and $5 a month after that. Excellent opportunity for people who only have 1 TV or just want sports etc.

I’ll post more of the pricing breakdown later today but hit me up if you’re interested. For brand new customers you’re probably looking at about $80 a month for HS50 or 75 and the Pik TV service.

for existing customers id try to log in and see if you can apply it under your account, i have a feeling only new customers are eligible though.

For the Premium PikTV channels i beleive it's channel dependant, HBO is either $8 or $10 i believe

Can you login piktv using the app?
Also how much to just buy the piktv box instead of renting for $5-$10 a month?

Hondaracer
09-26-2018, 05:19 PM
You can use the PIK TV app and watch all the channels you have with PIk anytime on your phone as well as on demand content.

Right now the PiK TV is $25 total, one time fee. It’s being rebated $75 right now. The monthly payment is for the channels you choose, once you’ve purchased the PIK TV it’s yoirs forever. However if you leave Telus you lose the ability to watch the channels obviously and it’s only use is the android box portion of it.

https://i.imgur.com/XLPzzch.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/brphWrm.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/AYl2am7.jpg

For those unfamiliar with the tech, these nodes create a “mesh network” a singular SSID broadcast from two different points. When your signal drops below a certain level the device seemlessly connects to the next boost to extend the range of your Wi-Fi network.

TELUS essentially copied Google WiFi which is $400+ for their 3 puck system. We offer this 2 puck starter pack for $120 or on monthly installments. Also a 30 day money back guarantee if it doesn’t work out for you.

If you have decent speeds (50+) and are still having WiFi issues this could be a good solution that is reasonably inexpensive

If anyone is interested hit me up and I can have the kit mailed out to you within a day or so

DJ Milk

syee
09-26-2018, 08:57 PM
Not a bad price for a mesh setup. Does it have to use the Telus modem/router/AP or can it work with any setup?

I think Asus also has their own firmware update (AiMesh) that allows a lot of their relatively current routers to act as mesh AP's if you've already got an Asus router or two kicking around.

I should be getting my PureFibre 300/300 setup this Saturday thanks to Hondaracer. (unless of course Shaw decides to give me an offer I can't refuse)

Not gonna be possible most likely. The pricing is already our “promo” pricing as is.

And technically you can use them without being on a Telus network. However the Telus customer “My WiFi app” is what you use to set it up initially and control it going forward. I’m sure using it on a different network you’d get most of the functionality but couldn’t guarantee the troubleshooting etc which you may lose by not having the app. You could also login to the GUI and set things up that way

Data on the pik burned or waived on optik? How many piks can be used on one account?

Hondaracer
09-27-2018, 08:14 PM
Only 1 PIK as it’s made to be an alternative to optic for people with just high speed service. More than one box you’re kinda forced to go with Optik.

When you are watching your “channels” the data does not count, however using YouTube, Netflix etc still counts towards the cap. We offer unlimited data now though for $5 a month and you May be able to swing getting it comped upon sign up.

Hondaracer
10-22-2018, 02:16 PM
PIK TV Promo has been extended, so you can get it for $5 a month and $0 a month for the first 3 with an internet subscription (new or existing customer)

There's also some decent deals being tossed around that arent on the site ($80 for the first 6 months TV HS75 and Internet Pick 6 theme packs) and then approx $140 a month thereafter, so Telus pricing is attempting to be on par with Shaw.

Hit me up if interested, may be able to get a free BOOST tossed in on top of any sign up for Internet or TV + Internet

Also some promos for Existing customers getting 1GB of extra cellular data for free if you have services bundled with your cellular services.

Any current deals Hondaracer? Existing Telus user still waiting for fibre in neighborhood.

If Fiber is coming in the next few months you’re always better off waiting to re-up on an agreement once the Fiber is in place because they obviously want everyone on the new infrastructure. It will almost certainly come with a full hardware upgrade and most likely a speed upgrade at the current cost or cheaper than what you’re paying now.

Black Friday deals are still in place until January first with promo pricing for the full two year term on internet service and 6 months on Tv service.

I layed this out for another member who Pmed me but I will explain it here as well so everyone else can be on the same page

I know everyone wants to pay the same cost for the full two year term. However, that’s almost never the best way to save money. The way you usually pay the same cost for the entire agreement is when you take the free gift, ie. TV, google home, etc.

They then figure Ok you got the Tv so now your TV and internet will be $160/month for the full two years.

However, when you take the promo pricing or any sort of break on the pricing, I know it’s annoying when it changes to the higher rate, however the long term savings are -always- better. Instead of getting say a $700 Tv most of the time you stand to save 700/800/900 over the term of the contract.

I got a decent deal on shaw recently. Been with them for over 10+ years at both my house and my parents/in laws house. So we all got the following

120 bucks for 2 years.

TV basic + HBO + Crave + Chinese HD channels + homephone + internet 300 (150, but everyone gets upgraded to 300 for free) and the blue sky box.

I thought it was a pretty good deal.

There is a current promotion on till the 6th if anyone is interested, essentially 24 month promo pricing instead of the typical 6 month promo then pricing going up

So High speed 25 regular price: $80/Month, 24 month promotion price: $55/month (for the full 24 months)

High speed 50/75 Regular price: $85/month, 24 month promotion price: $60/month (for the full 24 months)

Highspeed 150: Regular $95 Promo $60

Highspeed 300: Regular $110 Promo $75

Highspeed 750: Regular $140 Promo $105

Obviously the speeds over 75 are mostly for fiber eligible customers.

On top of that, you can get PIK TV completely free for the entire term (which is like an android box with basic cable channels included and specialty channels charged per channel)

There is also elgibility for home security if anyone is interested, on any 2 year term you can get the basic home security package for free for 6 months ($18 month thereafter) for the basic package with the panel, door sensors, and motions etc.

Hit me up if interested

I’ll never tell somone to stay with our service if their paticular service is shit. There are some cases where there is literally nothing service providers can do to improve their paticular service for reasons like geographical location etc.

However, using a “3rd party” service provider like the one you posted is almost always the last resort and the vast majority of them are simply piggy backing off the major providers infrastructure and using that service under their name.

So the trade off for getting the “free” unlimited data cap is, virtually non-existent customer service, garbage hardware, and most of the time, having to buy your own router (most only provide a modem and then you have to buy your own router)

While Telus 3200 and the Shaw gateway aren’t perfect they are better than the vast majority of consumer level routers you’d buy sub $300-$400. So that’s another factor to consider in these 3rd party providers.

In my experience the people using these services are the exact ones that shouldn’t be.

Edit* and exactly like I said, on that link you posted, they will be $25 cheaper a month for their high speed 75 service, however they only provide a modem, no router. So you can either rent their garbage for $5 a month, or buy it for $50. Not a great solution.

That’s good.

Honestly the modem/box rental is a non-starter for the big providers. Never think you’re getting some sort of deal because they are throwing in the “box rental”

The only thing you should ever be paying rental on are additional TV boxes over the 2-3 included

Can anyone help me with a plan? I don't want to sign up for a contract plan unless it's a smoking deal.

Currently i'm at
Shaw 75 <-- I don't need anything faster
Small TV <-- wouldn't mind upgrading.

with my student deal its $90.09 after taxes

If anyone is interested in Internet only packages, Telus is essentially giving away their "PIK TV" system now with any internet plans. If you have a 4k apple TV already its kind of the best case scenario because you could get your internet plan on full 2 year promo pricing, get the "PIK TV" for free, and essentially have basic TV and internet for the discounted price of the internet alone.

PIK TV is like a lite version of our optik TV, basic channels, some on demand content, and you can add specialty channels with similar pricing to the full optik packages.

Also if anyone is interested in Home security, our security promotions are just rolling out now, you can get basic monitored security for free for 6 months with 1 other service (internet, TV, etc.) then after that its either $25 or $35 a month depending on your package. The system is pretty good full android touch screen interface, wireless sensors, or we can also take over existing hardwired systems currently installed in homes.

For existing it may be like free for 6 months then 5$ a month after that

no theme packs as far as i know, but the individual channels are priced better than optik usually. IE. HGTV would normally be a $3-$5 alacarte i think its only $2 with PIK

Things add up when you add additional features or components to packages.

The basic protect package is the main panel, 3 door/window contacts, 2 motions. Additional motions and window contacts are usually 15-20 a peice one time fee.

When you step up to the bigger packs with cameras etc. you get more sensors, smoke/CO2, flood detection etc.

The problem with the Qolsys panel which is the nice touch screen one is we do not have a free secondary panel available. If you want the slightly smaller secondary panel it’s a one time $220 cost. But it looks pretty nice to have in a bedroom etc.

Just wanted to get some thoughts.

Currently on Telus PureFibre (paying $95 a month), but moving in our new place that doesn't have Telus fibre available. So they best they said they could offer was:
150 download speed/30 mbps upload.

Would deduct off $20 a month, to $75 a month for the remaining year on the contract as I'm loosing the fibre.

Shaw's option would be the Internet 600 with Blue Curve, which would be $55 for the first 6 months, and then $95 for the next 18.

First question is can I cancel Telus if i were to switch because I'm loosing the service i currently get, and not have to pay out a portion of the contract?

Secondly, going down to Telus 150, compared to Shaw 600 seems like a no brainer, but I really just exclusively stream apple tv and Netflix (no gaming), so wasn't sure if its that necessary or if i can still get away with the Telus 150.

04-17-2019, 10:05 AM
For high speed 150 on TELUS you’re going to be using a bonded connection (two separate phone lines) which, imo isn’t ideal nor does it work as effectively as Shaw’s coax connections I’d say

For your speed question I’d say 150 is already overkill for you. In most cases people are simply getting speeds for the sake of getting the faster speed. 150 is far more than adequate for most. The thing that the big speeds give you is overhead.

A weak signal at the far end of your house on high speed 600 is going to be much faster than a weak signal on high speed 50.

One minute or 5, does it really matter?

Also the vast majority of sites, gaming services, etc throttle back their downstream bandwidth. You will -never- get gb speeds through things like steam, origin, etc.

Even with YouTube I highly doubt they allow even 100mb/s speeds for their buffering

Edit* also the vast majority of devices do not have Wi-Fi adapters capable of gigabit speeds. So if you primarily use Wi-Fi devices anything over 750 is usually a waste because even brand new iPads, iPhones, etc cannot do gigabit speeds

Is the Pik Tv live or is it all streaming past and current shows? Talked very briefly to a guy at Telus today. Looks like my condo is wired for Telus fiber. Online promo I was looking at is Telus 150 for $75 and pik tv free for the first 3 months 5 subscriptions then $5 a month there after. Guy also said they could sweeten it a bit with some billing credits.

First time signing up for internet/cable so hopefully making a reasonable choice.

... 0.5 faster, 0.2 faster... same same but different? shrug

yeah... i have 150... im thinking of TRYING 300 to see if it even makes a difference.. i mean of course it'll make a difference. but will it make a difference in my LIFE. most of the time things are downloading and i go do something else, and when i come back it was done for a while.

My PC is wired to the router so having 1Gb does work out. I do download from time to time and I don't really have to wait...... or having several things downloading at the same time. WiFi don't really card much since I only use my ipad from time to time and cell phone is mostly for what's app/we chat.

Do I need 1Gb. Not really but is free so why not use it.

Yea well most people pay for their service and the added $15-$30 a month for the extra speed you’re not using adds up over a 2 year term.

I find also that with fiber, you’re overhead generally makes up for multi-device use. Ie. If somone or multiple people are using their phone, computers, iPads etc. if you were to run a hardwired speed test you still get your full download speed while other devices are currently using the bandwidth as well. So it’s not really a problem of multiple devices running at once when you’re at the 150/300 levels.

so far not really noticing any difference at all. my torrents still never hit max speeds, ever. but yes i can download a lot more stuff at the same time without speed drops. and my after VPN speeds are still 500/300ish.

maybe worth it??? maybe?

Some current inside promos going on for Telus:

1. Student offer - Students with valid post-secondary ID can save $30 /mo on Internet 6 - 750, for 12 mo. (Example: Customer signs up for HS 75 for 55$/month, no contract)

2. If the customer re-contracts, they automatically get unlimited data. This is stackable with the 10$/month off when the customer re-contracts. This would be especially useful in cases where the customer is already paying 15$/month on unlimited data

3. HSIA: Save $35 on all Internet tiers (excluding Gigabit)/Optik TV: Save $20/mo for 24 months on 4 Theme Packs
• Must sign on for two years

As always theres no commitment if i shoot off a referral for anyone interested, at worst you could use the pricing as leverage with Shaw or future deals

I hopped on a Shaw deal a few months ago:

40/month for Internet 300 with the latest xb6 modem. I thought that was a pretty good deal. contract for 2 years but i don't see myself not needing internet in the foreseeable future so 2 years was okay for me.

I'll likely call in at the end of my term hoping they will honor the continuation of 40/mo and not increase it otherwise I will shop elsewhere.

Our new condo has released a TELUS promo for new owners. Sign up for Internet 25, Optik TV Essentials, and Home Phone Lite on a 2 year service agreement and get the first year for $0. We have no need for the home phone.

We are current Shaw customers without a contract receiving Internet 15 and nearly all the TV channels (except for HBO) because I'm still on a very old package from 10 years ago ($170/mo) that is no longer offered. It costs me $180/mo after taxes.

Thoughts?

I went for it, I was with Shaw for 2 years and TELUS is so much better in my opinion. There's so much free wifi out there as it is nowadays that the shaw open incentive didn't matter to me. I upgraded to internet 50 and Medium tv package and im paying 30 bucks a month.

NHO should be HS300 (unlimited data), TV essentials (up to 2, 4k boxes), home phone lite, free first year on 2yr contract. Can cancel 2nd year for $15/remaining months ($180). So if you plan to cancel, think of it as $15/month for 1yr.

Telus contract up next month, looking to renew.

Current plan is TV pik 6 ($38) / Internet 75 ($50) / Home Phone ($7) = $95 before tax.
Called today and spoke to Philippines lady from Telus, offered me practically the same thing I'm paying for 2 year renewal, with some extra added features which I don't care for.

I'm considering adding home security and get rid of TV since no one watches TV at home now.

Internet 50 (downgrade from current 75) - $40
Small TV + 5 Theme pack - $57
Free 4k box

total $97 + tax = $108/mo on 2 year term.

is this reasonable for now a days?

Telus was just ridiculous wanted $170/mo for Optik Tv + 4 pack + Internet 75.

I haven't accepted.

I just renewed with Telus this morning. Pik 5 TV + Internet 75 + Home Line = $67. I opted out of Optik since rarely watch shows on TV, but nice to have TV when I do want to watch (app based with my options - tablet/computer/phone).

If I wanted Optik TV + Internet 75, Telus offered me $88. Not too far off than your Shaw deal.

Telus is trolling you with that plan they offered since they can literally offer that for 1/2 the price/even less than that since you'll be a new customer if you switch from Shaw.

You shouldn't have to haggle, wheel and deal, type in a special cheat code and spend hours on the phone to get an internet deal. Telus called 3 weeks back and asked if the can run fiber to the house. I said no problem. Checked the Telus website today and they want $70 for 50 down 10 up. They will give me $200 if I sign up for a 2-year deal. Making the final price $54. Can't wait for starling.

I've been using Novus for almost two years and the service has been great. If you get a referral to Novus, both accounts get one free month of service. Just throwing it out there in case you don't know anyone else on Novus.

I thought about switching over to Telus because their reps came to my building to offer some promos. I took the day off work and their tech no showed. I rescheduled for another day. The tech called me 30 minutes before the appointment and said he didn't have the key to enter the telecom room in my building. Telus installed fibre optic in my neighbourhood, they were converting the neighbours over to Telus. They finally offered me a $300 credit, $110 a month for tv, cable and phone but they wanted $5 extra for each wired box. I did not want the wireless boxes. So add up all the boxes and the complexity of my house and garage setup it was not worth switching to Telus.

I got a hold of shaw retention, they dropped it from $206.64 + taxes to $100 + taxes for a 2 year contract. Plus they gave me 2 months free to resign for 2 years.

Internet 300
Medium TV Pick 7, with 3 gateway boxes and 2 cable boxes

I switched to Telus from Shaw due to corporate discounts being cheaper monthly. I was offered Fibre 300/300 and 7 theme packs plus netflix subscription, 2 pvrs and a $400 credit for $120/month plus tax for 2 years.

Shaw called a couple days ago and offered Internet 300, Total tv, 2 blue curve tv pvrs and a $250 credit for $79/month plus tax for the first year and $129/month plus tax for the second year.

Telus definitely was a better deal but if I call Shaw retention after the year is up, it'll be a couple hundred dollars cheaper even with netflix out of my pocket.

They want people on contracts because they are losing money on the 6 month switchers. I wouldn’t go as far as to say they are in cahoots together but from a business perspective it doesn’t make sense to spend $1000-$2000 to do an initial install only to have a customer switch after 6 months and not even recoup the initial install costs.

Perhaps these providers should offer incentives to encourage existing customers to stay without negotiating with retentions. It will always cost more to gain a new customer compared to keeping an existing one happy. Not sure why this industry is so backwards in Canada.

It's not that we don't want to lock down to a contract, it's the fact these companies are greedy fucks. Even when locked to an agreement say 2 years, you are still subject to the price increases they impose. E.g. Lies. Sometimes if you call again and get a different rep, you get different offers. Some of the surface level reps are plebs and don't have any authority. If you're able to access the "loyalty retention" department (even if you're not an existing customer), you'll at least go to the department with the reps that can bend "rules".

Remember that a lot of older devices including laptops etc may not have gigbit ethernet adapters.

As well, (and i've researched this to some degree and it appears to have SOME truth to it) even if a PC has a gigbit ethernet adapter, your standard mechanical hard drive may not be able to write data fast enough to show the true speeds, the bottle neck occurs in the pinging or writing of data back and forth between your HD and the ethernet adapter.

It sounds like BS, but from a few different searches it appears to have some validity.

Gigbit ethernet for $85 is crazy though

Good deal. Is that on a contract? 1 or 2 year?

I test speeds on new installs, daily. My year old laptop consistently tests 60% of what my phone does, on wifi. The only way to accurately test network speed is wired anyways.

With Telus fibre, you'll find the speeds are consistent, all day. I've seen Shaw 300 at 20, during peak usage times.

He said he's on wifi, so pretty much guaranteed it's way slower than a Gigabit if it's an internal wifi adapter. Even most modern gaming laptops have 2x2 wireless AC adapters (867 Mbps theoretical peak).

how the hell are you guys getting such high wifi speeds. i have optic 150 and i get d/l speeds of like 30. is my house made of lead or my devices so aged i can't reach those speeds b/c they're from a time long lost?

telus sent me a "free" wifi booster, don't think it will help with speeds, just range...

Im not sure what you know about signals/internet etc...i dont know much either. I do know on WiFi. You will never get the speeds you purchased. Now if you plug the moden into the device your using. You "should" get the 150.

Heres an example. I got Gigabit internet.
I live in a 1960's house

On my Samsung s8+ wifi. I get 385 down/300 up
On my 2007 laptop. I get 50 down/??? Up

If you live in coquitlam. People there complain about not being able to get fast speeds with telus. So they goto shaw or other places

I hope your not paying a lot for those speed those.

He's on fibre, so he should be getting speeds as advertised.

What I posted at the top of the page is from my phone, directly in front of the modem. There are many reasons why WiFi signal is slower, hence, testing should be done, wired.

Also check to make sure you're not using TKIP encryption, which is limited to 54.4 Mbps. You should be using AES.

What modem are you using? T3200?

yep. i know i'm at 150+ hardwired in, they showed me. it's just that my laptop disconnected using wifi right next to the modem would post said shitty speeds.

I was wondering if there was a particular reason, or if there's a point to having 150 if i'm never going to use it or realize these speeds.

Any Shaw technicians here? Purchasing a home with multiple buildings. I just have a few questions. Thanks!

Not a Shaw tech but I’ve called and had them over too many times, they aren’t much help. I have over 300’ between buildings and maybe another 80’ to the boxes. They tried to sell me another account.

I have coaxial cable and 2 phone lines underground between buildings.

For internet I put rj45 connectors on the phone cable and it worked but dropped connection daily until I added a switch on both ends of the cable. Rock solid internet and fast.

For cable tv at that length, it wasn’t a very stable connection. I replaced many cable end fittings and it’s great now. I’m using older non blue sky pvr and it works fine between buildings.

Kinda the problem with coax lines is the degradation of signal at those distances. Not to mention the distance from wherever your node is to the nib at the house

Anyone with Shaw getting actual gigabit speeds?

Mine seems to hover around 325-350Mbps down, while hitting the max advertised upload speed of 25Mbps.

Wonder if it's just an issue with capacity in the area since Shaw is FTTN or if it's my modem.

The support rep said that my modem is provisioned for gigabit.

EDIT: Turns out it's my TP-Link Deco M4. Not sure what about it.

I'm currently paying $136/mo taxes in for:

Small TV Pick 5
Cantonese Channels + Fairchild HD

Landline with voicemail and call waiting

They're offering me $160 for the same thing as a renewal so starting to look elsewhere.

I don't even use tv for news

You can stream it all!

Local news cbc n global can be streamed live thru the cbc app and Amazon prime

World news, BBC, France 24, sky news, cnn, al Jazeera, abcnews, Bloomberg, CNA, etc can all be streamed live, most of them thru youtube

I feel you just got to play the renewals game with the big 2 to get a deal. Going through first line reps is pretty pointless.

Just to follow up, I ended up getting the same deal as I had last time after renewals came calling. If it wasn't for the parents watching Chinese TV, I probably would have ditched cable and did Internet only as well.

iirc Fairchild n talent vision have a streaming option, but didn't look into how it works, mom has a hard enough time with Netflix

Your deal is great think parents are paying $200 now a month for Fibre 750 crave n total tv

They were paying $300 on a grandfathered plan, and I put them on the new plan, the first line Rep was offering me a crappier deal than advertised on their website for $275 a month smh

I should also note, they changed my Pik 5 to Total TV (they called it a loyalty discount), but that really makes virtually no difference to me since the family really only watched the Chinese channels and Sportnet during hockey season.

I only got Internet 600 though - I didn't realize that their Fibre plans offered higher upload speeds otherwise I would have to tried to negotiate that instead of the Internet 600. When I asked afterwards, they quoted $206 for the same thing as i have now but with Fibre 750.

Telus Gigabit FTW!

This is on my main PC temporarily using a USB WiFi adapter. I had no speed issues using the exact same hardware at another place I was living in temporarily. Was getting a consistent 75-85mbps DL/UL using the same hardware but ever since moving here to our new place the connection has been pretty finicky.

I called the loyalty retention department last weekend and all they offered was $53.75+tax for Telus75 with unlimited bandwidth for 24 month contract.
That sounds like a shitty deal if I could get what you have for just $6 more. lol

Luckily I declined, but I plan to call in again maybe next week. I still got a month before my current contract ends.

The more I think about it, I'm probably just going to cut TV altogether and not even go with PikTV. Just internet and sign up for streaming platforms. I really don't follow anything on TV.

I’m on Telus Gigabit and get around 900-950 Mbps over ethernet, 200-650 Mbps over wifi depending on where I am in the house (with my devices that have wireless AC adapters).

I’m using a D-Link Wireless AC router, though, not the router built into the modem which wasn’t very good for range or speed. I found changing my settings really helped. 5 GHz to WPA2/WPA3 encryption and Wireless AC instead of the default WPA/WPA2 and wireless A/N/AC really helped my speeds. Using the 2.4 GHz connection with WPA/WPA2 and wireless G/N for legacy devices (who has wireless A/B devices these days?)

My 2yr contract ends soon. HS75, Essentials and 4 theme packs. I got a promo price a couple years ago, then stacked a discount from MPIA for my complex switching to fibre. If there's nothing decent, I might cut the TV and just stream. Or do you think I should just try retentions?

Mpia renewals are a bit tricky, prices are all over the place depending on the building.

TV can basically be a throw in in most cases, I’d expect like HS150 + basic TV for about $130-$150 or so depending.

I’ll check Tom

My situation is we signed up for a new construction first-year-free promo and then added a bunch to it.

We're now at the one year mark of a 2 yr agreement, so the promotion is over. Here's what I'm paying starting next month:

Internet 300 - $115
TV - 11 theme packs, Netflix, Crave+Movies+HBO - $120

Any ideas to bring this cost down? We like our TV channels so hoping to keep as many as possible. There's really just 8 theme packs we like, plus Netflix, Crave, HBO and Prime.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe on the New Home Offer (first year free on 2yr contract) you can cancel the second year for $15/mo for each remaining month. Meaning if you cancelled at the end of the first year, you'd owe $180 (still a damn good deal for a year of services).

Might be worth looking into, if there are better promos available, currently.
