how does Vegas win the cup with left over players?
Vegas won the Cup with a depth of forwards and arguably the deepest 6 defencemen in the NHL.
I remember Bieksa complimenting Vegas on their defensive depth.
Pietrangelo, Zach Whitecloud, Shea Theodore, McNabb, Martinez, and Hague.
Then you add some players who were overlooked. Marchesseault was undrafted out of junior hockey.
The only star players on this team are Eichel and William Karlsson.
Eichel asked to be traded from the Sabres after disagreeing with the Sabres medical team about having fusion surgery on his neck, instead of a disc replacement. Eichel chose to have disc replacement.
You have a bunch of forwards, that for various reasons other teams did not want on their team, and yet have talent and mental toughness to become better players for Vegas.
Players who played with a chip on their shoulder.
Their captain Mark Stone went into beast mode in the Finals, and especially game 5.
The Vegas GM also made a good trade in acquiring goalie Aiden Hill.
Eichel wins a Stanley Cup before McDavid hahaha. Both players were drafted no. 1 and no. 2 in the 2015 draft.
68style
06-15-2023, 08:06 AM
... William Karlson is NOT a star player.
Stone and Pietrangelo are way bigger stars than Karlson will ever be and Pietrangelo has slipped significantly the last few years.

Vegas' defensive depth is the main reason that they beat the Panthers.
This team is well coached and very disciplined on defence.
I cannot remember any time that the Panthers had any sustained pressure in the offensive zone during the Finals when both teams played 5 on 5.
Golden Knights' defence is big, physical, and fast. They move the puck out of their zone quickly. Remove any gaps in open ice quickly between their players and Florida's forwards. They have defencemen who can skate well and can make the quick first pass to their forwards. Vegas also has big defencemen who can punish opponents with their physical play.
You compare the Vegas top 6 defencemen with our Canucks defence to see a big difference in calibre between a championship team and lottery pick team.
Like I said before, Bieksa complimented Vegas on their defensive depth.
Vegas' biggest weakness is their penalty killing. 77 percent on the PK during the regular season. Their PK during the playoffs was not that good either.
Their defence in terms of 5 on 5 play is stellar though.

hey don't forget Mikko Rantanen. He won the cup with Avs before Jack, and Connor. And he was pick #10 lol.

Finally! It is about time that the Canucks, and Aquilini, open up their wallets to buy out OEL to create salary cap room.
This is what would happen under a buyout scenario for the team:
Ekman-Larsson has four years and $29 million remaining on an eight-year, $66 million contract he originally signed with the Arizona Coyotes in July 2018. He was traded in a blockbuster deal to Vancouver in July 2021 with Arizona retaining 12 per cent of his salary.
According to PuckPedia, the buyout will allow the Canucks to save $7.1 million against the cap this upcoming season. However, it will now keep a portion of the contract for the next eight seasons.

I was a big fan of doing this even in the middle of last season and I hope to god they follow through. Not only is he fucking up our salary cap, causing us to lose other good players and wasting a spot on our roster... he's also preventing the development of other players and prospects. Best thing that happened during last season was him getting hurt to show it for real. It's super super worth it, I think we eat like 2.5 mill in cap space every year for 8 years after... but it's fucking worth it. Overall they also save salary dollars. Here's the details:
OLIVER EKMAN-LARSSON BUYOUT RESULTS
A Oliver Ekman-Larsson buyout spans 8 years, has a cost of $19,333,333 and savings of $9,666,667. Ekman-Larsson is 31 years of age at the time of the buyout; therefore, the buyout ratio is 2/3. With $29,000,000 in salary remaining, the cost is $19,333,333, and the savings are $9,666,667. Buyouts span twice the length of the remaining years and because there are 4 years remaining in the contract, the buyout length is 8 years. The buyout cap hit is displayed in the Cap Hit Calculations table below.
This contract was involved in a retained salary transaction. The resulting costs and cap hit are therefore split between each team based on the percentage of salary retained by the respective teams.
Arizona Coyotes: 12%

shelling out the money hasn't been the issue. it's the meddling with decisions made within the club to try and move past the 2011 era that have burned this club for the last decade.
we'll see what management does next here because i swear to god, if they fill up this new cap space with another boneheaded contract i'm going to be pissed. lots of work to be done especially with Bear out until approximately December. our lack of depth in defense is still a glaring issue.

Buying out OEL was the only option to overhaul the defense. If they were serious about it, they wouldn't have waited 4 years until his contract expired which is exactly what happened.
Frees up a roster spot too which I noticed wasn't mentioned a lot in social media :lol trade would've been ideal but he has a NMC which he was reportedly unwilling to waive.

https://clutchpoints.com/panthers-news-paul-maurice-shocking-aaron-ekblad-injuries-bruins
Ekblad played through multiple injuries, including a broken foot, Maurice told TNT on Tuesday night. He also suffered two separate shoulder dislocations and a torn oblique this postseason.
Maurice says Ekblad's foot broke all the way back in the opening round against the Boston Bruins. In fact, he wasn't the only injured Panthers player in that series. “The vast majority of our injuries came in the Boston series,” the Panthers head coach revealed.

Hearing that Boston might be interested in OEL ... obvious question is why? I thought he was like an anchor ... even at vet minimum ... is he usable as 3rd line D?
At league minimum, it's a low risk signing for someone like OEL even if he's a 7th d-man
Boston was his only other choice to waive his NMC

He had a bad year last year but he also had a significant foot injury in the offseason. He was okay the year before and even managed to make Myers look respectable. If BOS gets the OEL that made Myers respectable then he'll be a bargain if he's signed for cheap.

what happens when a player gets bought out and signs with another team?
they get the buyout and the new contract?
should be that if the player signs a new deal the buy out team get's a reduction on the cap hit. i'd say it should also reduce the payout based on the new contract but then they new contract would just be league min so wouldn't help the original team much but anything would help

To discourage the signing of large ridiculous contracts that need to be bought out.
If theres no cap penalty for buyout, then the richest owners would be able to throw money at any player they want knowing they would be able to buy them out.
If you can reduce the cap penalty, you'd be able to game the system and buy cap space back by offering to pay a team to sign the player to a higher new contract.
With a cap penalty, teams have to think twice about buyouts because it will hurt them for years. Otherwise a contending team that doesn't have cap space to add McDavid could say to the Oilers, you buy him out, I'll pay the buyout amount for you, then I'll sign him for 1 yr $1mil. He comes back after he wins the cup and gets paid, I win the cup, you get a boatload of assets. And all it cost us was money.

You're focused on the ridiculous example that you've missed the point.
No cap penalty give rich teams an advantage because there's no consequences to giving out big contracts. You bet you ass teams will game the system, obviously not like the exaggerated scenario I gave. I thought it was pretty obvious that that was an over the top unrealistic example. The NHLPA would never allow mcjesus to sign for $1mil. The player doesn't have to go back to a team, I only said that because if youre the oilers, you would never agree to let him go.

Team 123 has player X at $5mil cap hit entering the last year of contract. Player X can play and contribute, but is only worth $3mil and is not needed for a team that's retooling. Team 123 needs all $5mil cap space and wants to get rid of this contract, but no one wants to take on this player at $5mil without some serious sweeteners (draft picks you dont want to give up).
Currently, Team 123 would only be able to trade and retain (but have to keep some cap hit) or buyout the player and have a cap penalty for some years. Neither is optimal because they need the cap space.
Team 789 is a contending team that wants player X, but can only take the player at $3mil cap hit. Unless team 123 retains (and therefore, keep some cap hit), team 789 can't do the deal.
If there's no cap penalty for buying out a player, Team 789 with its deep pockets can trade peanuts for player X, buy them out with 0 consequences to their cap, and then sign them to a new contract for $3mil. Why would team 789 do this? Because they can get the player they want at the cap they need, and it only cost a few extra million bucks for the buyout. Why would team 123 do this? Because they wanted to get rid of the contract to make cap space to begin with and the cheap owner doesnt have to pay for the buyout.
Teams already game LTIR to stack the roster for playoffs and utilize other team's retaining slots to reduce cap hits. They would 100% do this.
Why wouldn't the league want this? Because it will give rich teams an advantage. Because teams will sign inflated contracts to get the player they want knowing that they could get out of it scott free down the road. More OEL contracts.
But hey, it's a stupid hole.
68style
06-21-2023, 09:48 PM
Your theories only work so long as the NHLPA doesn’t exist.
The NHLPA will step in and pressure any member signing under value to not fuck up average valuations for other equivalent players.
I agree there needs to be a cap, but not for the reasons you’re stating, it’s a non starter with the union.

According to CHEK TV's Rick Dhaliwal, Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin would like to move up from 11th overall in the first round on Wednesday night.
Dhaliwal went on to add that the Canucks really like Russian forward Matvei Michkov, who scouts say is arguably the second-most talented player in the draft behind Connor Bedard. He's also reporting that the Canucks have already interviewed Michkov and are expected to do so again before the draft on Wednesday in Nashville.

Kings get: Dubois
Jets get: Alex Iafallo, Rasmus Kupari, and Gabriel Vilardi and Montreal’s second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.
I can understand Winnipeg wanting a guy like Iafallo to be part of the deal... but they need to do their research, the dude literally lives in a van by the ocean and does nothing but surf when he's not playing. He's going to fuckin hate it in Winnipeg and may not even go there let alone stay there.

C'mon Allvin! Make the first round pick and the five other picks in the 3rd and 4th rounds count!
-gonna be a good test to see how good the the team scouts and analytics work are for the Canucks in terms of tonight's draft.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/canucks-plan-to-make-every-pick-count-by-going-into-draft-ready-for-any-scenario/
Todd Harvey, Canucks director of scouting:
The No. 11 pick will be the franchise’s highest since 2019 and its six picks in the first four rounds are the most for the Canucks in 29 years.
Harvey believes this draft will prove to be as special as everyone thinks.
“I think it is,” he said. “You look at the top guys and you've got some really, really good players at the top. And then moving down the list, it's strong. You can probably get similar players anywhere from 12 to 35. I mean, it is a deep draft. And I think there's real value in those later rounds. So we're excited to make some picks in the third.

Without looking at the entire list I know for sure Zach Benson was rated higher and was still available but ultimately went 13th to Buffalo. Small dude but plenty of interest and the reason most people here know of his name is because he's from Langley but oh wells I heard Wallinder's name come up quite a bit pre draft as a potential and it desperately fills a need so doesn't appear we went off the board in a wtf pick.

I was looking at the Canucks draft history from the last 10 years and it is downright shocking how few players even if they did make the NHL barely did or aren’t playing anymore.
There are like 3-4 draft years I skimmed through where nobody on the list made the NHL or, even if they did, played a couple of games before disappearing. Our drafting is pretty fuckin trash.

I read some stat that 50% of all players drafted make it to NHL but they used a very low bar, played 1 game in the NHL. Most of us would use a more common sense bar eg. played one season or cracked a lineup consistently. I still think it's close to 20% of those drafted would make it to this common sense criteria.

Went to Elisa on Friday night, saw Francesco having dinner with Rick Tocchet and some Canucks execs.
Francesco is such a pimp. He had a hot glitzed up young chick with nice tits sitting at a table on the other side of the restaurant away from them, by herself. He'd periodically leave the business table and go sit with her and chat and then head back to the big wigs.
I found it so amusing watching this chick sit solo and try to busy herself on her phone while drinking champagne between his walk over visits.

Canucks comment threads are just wild with people saying it's too soon for #53 and also that nobody has worn #28 since Luc Bourdon passed away... any thoughts on both?

It's hard to believe he was the best coach in the NHL at one point
whitev70r
09-15-2023, 09:18 AM
I wouldn't say he was best coach .. at any time/period ... he won 1 Cup (with Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, pretty well all-star team). Finals with Anaheim, finals with Wings and lost to Pens. There are others like Quennville (oops, what happened to him) with multiple or Jon Cooper with back to back. I like the Wings and even I thought he was a bit over hyped. As for Olympics ... just glad his coaching didn't lose the gold medal for Canada. I think most of us could have coached that team to a gold medal ... haha
murd0c
09-15-2023, 10:20 AM
He was the best coach and that's why when Toronto hired him and paid him 5 mill a year. Don't you remember when he became available all the teams wanting him because everyone thought he was a step above all the other coaches? This is way before Jon Cooper so he shouldn't even be in the discussion. Quennville of course was at the top as well but Babcock was considered a step above him since it was claimed he knew how to get the most out of his star players which is why the Redwings won the cup. Also don't forget about him coaching team Canada in 2010, Winning the world jrs and and the world championship's which is the only coach that has won all three so far.
whitev70r
09-15-2023, 10:44 AM
I know that people thought he was the best ... what I'm saying is that his record doesn't put him in that category. He lost more Cups in the Finals than he won. He was always seen as a bit pompous ... but I guess you need that confident edge.
And I'm comparing him to other active coaches today so Cooper does count.
It's my opinion ... you're entitled to yours.

I'm talking the past and why people used to think he was the best coach in the NHL it has nothing to do with today and I was personally never a fan of him, I always thought he was a cocky prick and every that has come out shows that's the case.
I think after these current actions he doesn't belong any where in the NHL and I so hope he gets fired and blackballed for life. In order for him to be a coach in today's NHL he needs to change everything about his style, just like Torts did. If Torts didn't change his style he wouldn't be a coach in the NHL today.
whitev70r
09-15-2023, 10:54 AM
Not to belabor the point but I hear you. I was a Wings fan during the Lidstrom era. And Babcock couldn't get it done back to back.
I mean how did he do in Toronto in the years he was there? And then he got fired. That to me is quite telling.

Did we forget that Spencer Martin had a 4.0GAA last year?
I dont get it.... people wanted Pearson gone well before he was injured, well now he's gone and we get back a backup goalie who's had a 0.91X Save percentage. It cost a 3rd rounder cause we're over the cap and teams know a move needed to be made.
Silovs can get another year in to develop/dominate the AHL and then come up.

I got no problem getting a backup, but you’re hiring women into positions of power and touting yourself as a forward thinking organization you don’t get a backup goalie who literally was found guilty of punching a woman repeatedly in the face and spitting in her face while pinning her on the ground and then fought all the cops that came to arrest him.
Guy is trash.

I dunno what their plan is, but i guess maybe he's just a stop gap until Silovs gets more time in the AHL or Martin perhaps regains his confidence? I believe Desmith's contract expires after this season so we aren't anchored by him for long.

Their plan was to move a player to create cap space and to bring in a back up goalie to help Demko when needed. Silovs needs way more playing time and him sitting on the bench in the NHL isn't the best for his development. Yes it sucks giving up a 3rd in the process but it was needed and it doesn't bother me what so ever.
Liquid_o2
09-20-2023, 09:27 AM
Agree that Silovs needs another year of seasoning in the AHL. Hopefully he gets another 40+ starts and then is ready for prime time next year. No point in him riding the bench for Demko as a 22 year old.
DeSmith is perfect for the backup role. A tidy piece of work by Allvin & Co.

There was some discussion about this in threads talking about the trade, people from Pittsburg etc. we’re saying he’s actually been decent in the community and had ongoing training and victim service stuff etc.
Not to say if justifies anything but I guess people get a second chance it people like Dany Heatley and Craig Mctavish can pretty much commit manslaughter and get a second chance

Well that's the ugly part of hockey. It's an "old boys club". Just look at Babcock and how long it took him to get exposed. No doubt there have been whispers/stories/rumours/etc for years, but he was still hired by Toronto and Columbus.

“Ty has made some improvements since we drafted him last year and we were pleased to see him play meaningful games in the WHL playoffs,” said Allvin.

An announcement about Luongo being inducted into the Canucks' Ring of Honour:
Vancouver, B.C. – The Vancouver Canucks announced today that former goaltender Roberto Luongo will be inducted into the club’s Ring of Honour on December 14, 2023, when the Canucks host the Florida Panthers. The organization originally announced that Luongo would become the eighth player in franchise history to receive the honour on November 30, 2022.
“We are glad to officially have a date set for Roberto’s incredibly well-deserved induction to the Canucks Ring of Honour,” said Jim Rutherford, Vancouver Canucks President, Hockey Operations. “He is one of the greatest players to ever represent this team and his legacy continues in Vancouver to this day. As proud as we are to recognize Roberto with this achievement, it is as much of an honour for the organization and our fans to be able to celebrate him again in our building.”
Luongo spent eight years of his Hall of Fame career in Vancouver from 2006-2014 and was widely recognized as one of the League’s elite goaltenders during that time. Throughout his Canucks tenure, Luongo was nominated for several NHL awards, including the Vezina Trophy (2007, 2011), Lester B. Pearson Award (2007), Hart Memorial Trophy (2007), and the William Jennings Trophy (2011) which he won alongside creasemate Cory Schneider for the lowest goals-against average in the NHL.

Not mad about those AHL assignments. Obviously not great that players like Podkolzin haven’t taken a step but a few of those names probably would’ve made the roster over the last season or two.
