I'm mid-life, I have kids and I totally understand the whole need to buy a convertible. Don't buy a motorcycle - your kids don't need to see their father end up in a body bag or suffer from a life-changing injury. Buy a 4-seater convertible so you can take your kids for rides.
As some here know, I bought an E46 convertible a few years ago during COVID. It was a neglected example and it's automatic. But, I can at least work on it during my spare time and the parts network is very strong with numerous OEMs who still make parts, unlike Porsche. BMW still makes parts for the car and even their parts are not unreasonable. Don't overlook peak-era BMWs - E46, Z3/Z4, and even a 1-series convertible with the N52.
Another tip - get in the habit of putting on SPF50 (if it's not already part of your skincare regimen) to keep the freckles and sunspots at bay. You'll need it once you get used to driving with the top down.
As fun as the E88 is with the N52, I miss driving a Miata. At some point, I'll probably make the hop back to Miata life and leave the bimmer behind. Maybe once the kiddo is old enough to stay home by himself. Haven't thought through what the criteria is yet.

It highly depends on the kid. If your kid is going to stick with you and go everywhere you go like mine is trending, you'll be shut out of the Miata life.
It's extremely tempting for me to go buy a ND, but damn if it's hard with two kids and it'll just be a 5 figure lawn ornament if I did.

Dunno where else to post this, so I guess it fits this thread's criteria.
I was recently in Iceland which meant we had to rent some cars to drive around in. Now, me being an oldschool car guy who is still driving a '90 civic Si and a '98 civic, I have very little exposure to the newest cars and all the recent technology (read: past 10-15 years worth of "normal" features in cars these days). I usually laugh to myself when I open up my sunroof in the EF and say "oooh technology!" :lol
The two cars I was given to drive were a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and a Mitsubishi Outlander (dunno what years but pretty new-ish). Holy FUCK was this an annoying ass experience, NO exaggeration. The god damn car dings you when you're TWO WHOLE FUCKING KM/HR over the speed limit?! fuck off! And then this collision prevention bullshit when you're (barely) close to another vehicle, hitting the brakes for you because oh dear me, you're a wee bit too close teehee. The Outlander was even MORE annoying. Yawn? Fatigue warning "time for a break?" how about fuck you? Look at the radio, steering wheel vibrates "DiStRacTeD dRiviNg!!1 oMg!!!". Even through construction the damn collision prevention kicks in because it thinks you're crossing the line into other traffic/the shoulder. Please dear whatever the fuck god everyone prays to, tell me these features can be DISABLED....??? Otherwise I'll never buy a new car ever again unless this shit is not part of the car.
I did all the driving while we were there and holy fucking shit was I annoyed. I fucking hate that new cars these days automatically assume you're a retarded driver who needs all of these support systems in order to drive safely. Back up cameras make people idiots at parking but all of this shit I just described.... no wonder there's so many idiots in new cars. Fuck.
Traum
08-26-2025, 08:00 PM
I don't have any experience in either of the cars you mentioned, but I would guess that they might be European-specific features?
If stuff like this were to be found on US cars, I'm sure our southern neighbours would be flipping out big time, and Trump might even slap a tariff on all cars having these features.
(Oh wait... Trump is already slapping tariffs on cars made outside of the US... )

Took my sister's BMW to activate CarPlay in the head unit at a 3rd party vendor - for some reason none of the HK BMWs in come with it from the factory and is not upgradable by the dealer or through the app.
No CarPlay would've been fine if the built-in maps was decent, but the built-in Tencent Maps in these BMWs can't do the simplest task of getting directions from a full address. Instead, it can only search for POIs that Tencent has poorly indexed, making it practically useless if I'm trying to go anywhere that's not a mall.
I don't get why BMW can't get CarPlay onto its cars after all these years when 99% of the Chinese cars here have them - it's a very bizarre omission.

I wonder if it's a regional/Chinese gov thing?
How I understand it is that BMW structured CarPlay so that it's attached to ConnectedDrive server instead of being in the head unit like most cars, with the idea that owners can buy or pay a subscription for it (and other features like heated seats) through the app store. In Hong Kong's case, its server doesn't offer the app store component, so there's no workflow for owners to activate CarPlay the proper way. As to why the BMW HK won't activate it by default, every salesperson gives a different answer.
Originally I thought the CarPlay restriction was a regional / Chinese gov thing in the past, but all the BYDs / Zeekrs / Jaecoos sold here come with CarPlay as standard equipment.
I particularly like the Jaecoo 6 - it's got a giant screen for 3-row Apple CarPlay glory:
https://i.ibb.co/pjNrMLkz/Jaceoo-carplay.jpg
My absolute favorite feature of the car though is its 2000s knock-off MP3 player English translation - sometimes its Beijing accent even shines through:
https://i.ibb.co/XZF7RVgL/Translation-fail.jpg
Otherwise it's a pretty cool car - it's practically an all-electric Jimny with 280hp. Reliability / longevity TBD though.

Porsche is set to break with 94 years of tradition in 2028 when it launches a replacement for the combustion-engined Macan, which will be its first production car with drive biased towards the front wheels. It will also adopt the similarly sized Q5’s Quattro Ultra drive system. But instead of heavily re-engineering it to offer a rear-biased four-wheel drive system – as Porsche did with the first Macan – it will instead be used largely unmodified for cost reasons.

Based on SG's review of the X3 vs SQ5, the SQ5 can already shuffle 70% of power to the rear wheels but be 100% FWD on the highway, so I'm expecting a direct port of that system with some minor tweaks.
The Macan was basically a reskinned Q5 from 3 generations ago, so this would be no different.

Gutless hybrid drivetrain ported directly from the Civic hybrid of the era, which itself was not that good. Based one what the CRX SHOULD have been in in the past, it should have gotten the R18 as base and K20/24 for a CRZ Si.

I love it. That's one ugly rat-faced son of a biatch. With ugly, you have to go all the way. And I believe they accomplished that goal here.
Plus it looks like Rattrap which is cool.

This is him in Beast Wars! In Season 2 he got blasted by a nuke or something, which gave him this Transmetal form.
Here's the robot form for Transmetal Rattrap:

You know you're old when cars you remember in your 20s are now popping up with collector plates :crybaby:
A couple weeks ago I saw a NB Miata with collector plates and I thought that was crazy.
Then I saw this EG Civic. That's wild to me.

I like the iX3 from pictures. It's clear they took inspiration from the E9 shark nose era of cars. I like the skinny kidneys but of course will reserve judgement until I see the real thing. The tail lights I'm not sure about as it's looking too much like the A7/S7 tail lights and I thought those were ugly.
The 1st gen G chassis SUVs were mostly good, I even like the split headlight X7 and it works better than the 7 series sedan. And of course the X1, too bad it drives so poorly.

Switching gears, time to focus our efforts on hating on more Toyotas! For context, I transitioned away from Japanese cars to European for a while, and this Corolla and the Boxster are the cars I've owned the longest.
So our Corolla iM is hitting the 150,000KM mark, and by the end of the year, I expect we'll hit 160,000KM. With that in mind, I was thinking of getting ahead of some preventative maintenance before the harsh Ontario winters hit and thought of doing the following:
1. Coolant flush - The car is running the factory coolant since we bought the car brand new in 2017
2. Spark plugs - Probably time to replace (as per owner's manual)
3. Accessory belt - It shows no signs of cracking (that I can see) but it is the original belt
4. Waterpump and thermostat - No signs of leaking. Good idea to replace both?
5. Timing chain - Leave it alone or replace?
6. Engine / transmission mounts - leave them alone or replace?
7. Brake fluid flush - it's running on to 3 years, so probably time to flush.
I was thinking DIY'ing but I don't have the time to tackle this while working and in school. I asked a few Toyota dealers and a few independent garages and most of them just laughed at me and only suggested flushing the brake fluid and coolant, and replacing the spark plugs. Everything else was :fuckthatshit: (Replace it when it breaks.)
It's weird to hear that, especially when I've become accustomed to European maintenance. You either replace it as a preventative measure, or deal with it when shit goes south. Crazy how these cars are still well built, despite how much we shit on Toyota. I don't know if I'm complaining or of this is a traumatic reaction to European car ownership. Any thoughts/opinions?

The X1 looks better in those photos than in person IMO especially when it doesn't have big wheels or lacks the M package - it looks like it's 2" too high (huge wheel gap) and the cut lines in person make it look really cheap.
The current X3 is such a big step backwards from the previous one (and the interior is cheap-ass!) - there's a couple colours that it kinda works in (and if it's a M50 trim) but the base ones are horrible.
I don't mind the iX3 - it's a bit too slab sided like the X3 but definitely cleaned up.

dont diy it, all those fluids are annoying and poisonous. Plus disposal of such fluids are a pain in the ass... if you spill that shit anywhere, youre going to regret it. Dont forget to do the transmission fluid flush, at 150,000km this should be your 2nd or 3rd tranny flush.
Waterpump, thermostat you usually do with the belts. i think that should be a 1-1.5k job at the dealer. You can do this yourself but why? what a pain in the ass... you fuck up a tensioner and youre gonna have a bad day.
plugs id do that yourself, easy with a 4 banger. all accessible and dont really require much in way of specialized tools.
timing chain and mounts are only done as needed. its a toyota, so its never needed.

That's what my sister picked up last month and the EV powertrain fixes everything lacking in the ICE powertrain. 313hp and 364 lb-ft of instant torque is pretty potent for its size, and more than enough for city driving.
Canada does get the same powertrain, but only in Countryman SE guise.

:lawl:
Just do the coolant and spark plugs, it's a Toyota. Realistically you can probably skip those two as well.
Don't touch the thermostat until it leaks, it can probably go 350k so it's a waste of money.
Timing chain, if you can touch it from the oil filler cap (I can do that in my Mazdas) give the chain a tug to see how the slack is. If it's just a small amount of deflection, leave it. The chain on my Mazda didn't have problems and it's a hipo turbo. I don't think Toyota chains are known to stretch or break, it's not a Vitara.
You should know how to check for engine mounts, if it's not vibrating excessively, leave it alone.
You could do brake flush, but some people never flush the brakes after the first few years of maintenance.

The X3 is terrible, but overall BMW has been cost cutting the hell out of it's lower end cars with the 1 and 3 series cars. The G01 was already losing little things here and there at the end of it's cycle. My take is they spent a fuck ton of money developing the G01 and it shows, for this generation they are just phoning it in.

Someone should build a website that lets you project the total cost of ownership of a vehicle, over years & kms of ownership as inputs:
-MSRP minus the residual resale value
-typical aggregate maintenance cost (including replacement tire or oil cost because maybe this particular model is using something weird)
-typical aggregate repair cost
-typical insurance cost
-typical fueling cost
All this data is available, just nobody's slapped it all together yet.

I do this for my cars, but in a spreadsheet instead of a website.
I imagine the hardest part for most people is consistent and accurate data entry, which is a very difficult standard for most people to meet without at least some gamification or reward. Plus, the resale value is quite dependent on so many factors and takes years to determine for any one vehicle (unless you find a niche group of people that flips cars often).

The really detailed amounts down to the dollar really only matters if you are buying a Rav4 or CRV comparison and trying to figure out which one is going to give you more trouble free and low cost mileage.
Once you get into the luxury brands, it's become more of an emotional purchase. Yes badge buying makes it an emotional purchase.
When I bought the X5, the purchase price mattered, but that's because an equivalent Cayenne is worth 30k more. Insurance cost really didn't matter because compared to daycare costs it was just a small part of life. Saving $300 a year only pays for a year of daycare.
A portion of it was "we need a bigger car" and a portion of it was "I don't want to pay so much for gas" which justified the PHEV part of the equation. We weren't going to buy a Highlander hybrid at roughly the same cost of entry but with significantly cheaper maintenance moving forward - that part was emotional.

Edmunds does this but it's pretty stupid

3) doesn't consider dealer discounts (10%+ for many brands in the US)

Just as a first-order starting point, you could dump the used listing data from FB Marketplace, Car Gurus, AutoTrader, CL, etc, and look at pricing vs model year vs kms.
I think there's enough there that you can do some rough projections.
I think a lot of us could reasonably accurately guess how much a particular car of whatever year and kms should cost, even taking into account how much to scale the actual purchase price by, vs the listed price. If we can intuit that without numbers in front of us, I'm sure we could do the curve fitting on the ton available data.
For very niche models with sparse data, then yeah, this tool would just have to say something like "insufficient data, can only guess based on the market segment this vehicle is in (e.g. european luxury sub-compact SUV) with a "YMMV" disclaimer lol.

The closest thing scraping auction data:
https://www.dashboard-light.com
A great tool would need MMR auction access + some combo of forum scraping. ChatGPT could do a good job if MMR provided the data feed in an MCP server.
FWIW, I don;'t think there's a market for a TCO tool:
Reliability/TCO buyers probably going straight to Toyota/Honda.
Lease/TCO buyers like me are shopping brokers/incentives/payments.
Used German buyers probably don't care - it's big body Benz or bust.
Low credit buyers probably don't care - finance department matters most.
Buyers in smaller markets don't care too - their used options are limited.

tbh a fun thing to build could be a scraper that...
1) scrapes leasehacker for various broker deals, reading spreadsheets
2) replies to every reddit "what car should I buy/lease" post with the better deal if their deal is shit
OR
1) scrape the dashboard light website or even better, alldata's failure tool that tells you how often a repair is
2) reply to ppl and tell them how shit the car they're looking at is

Many dealerships have a tool that does exactly that - used primarily to help sales managers evaluate trade-ins and price used cars for the retail market according to retail and wholesale market data. It takes into account several factors, such as mileage, number of units on the market, average days on market, location of the vehicle, vehicle condition etc. to help managers determine an appropriate asking price.
I imagine there's enough data in there to model a depreciation curve for most vehicles, but from personal experience, it does nothing for niche vehicles based on how much I've been lowballed in the past.
In your mind, who are the main users for the site?

West Coast Toyota did a sheet with that info for the original owner of our old Matrix when the lady bought it. The service intervals are all available so you just need the pricing of those services and then you'll know what it costs per km/year of ownership.

So I went to fill up the gas on my ratrolla (I don’t remember when’s the last time I filled her up, it’s been that long). I went to this shell station on garden city.
I told the young East Indian lady attendant that I don’t need help, I’ll do it myself. I go inside to use the tap function (stupid shell doesn’t have tap on the pump, not sure why)
and when I come out, I see this Asian lady posing next to the car , leaning her ass against it, and taking selfies. I don’t even know where the fuck she came from.
I go up to her and was like, can I help you? She looked shocked. Then she said went utterly insane and said HEY DONT TOUCH MY CAR. I was like what the fuck!? She’s then said shit in mandarin like, this is my car walk away please. Then she tried to get in the passenger side, but since the door handles were retracted she didn’t know how to open them. So I stand there looking shocked like what the fuck is happening, and she tells me to go away or else her husband will be mad!
She then turns her phone on me and start filming me. I guess in case I fucking attack her or something. And she says shit in mandarin like this guy is trying to steal my car!
Just for background, I was wearing my usual Kirkland flip flops, some bench sweat pants, and a very ugly t shirt that value village probably won’t even sell. So I guess I do look like a fucking hobo….
So now I’m just confused, slightly aroused (actually more than slightly), and utterly not sure of what to do next. So I take out the key and press the unlock button and of course the door handles pop out. This bitch then stops filming and of course runs the hell away.
I kinda wanna chase her down and fuck her in the ass…. That kind of crazy is hot as hell. Worst part about it, I didn’t even fucking get a photo of her or a video!! Arrrghh

At this price I don't see the value proposition compared to ferrari/lambo/mclaren anymore. If you wanted to stunt, most girls cant tell the difference between a base cayman and the turbo S.

value? what fucking value. Most overrated piece of shit car in the last 10 years. I dont know why everyone's got their dicks up supporting this catastrophe of a company.
Like i keep saying time and time again, a 911 was and always had been (pre 997 days) only 7-10k more than a m3. For that amount of money extra, you get a weird ass backwards sports car. Fine.. its at least Interesting.... I agree with this money proposition and marketing placement. It drives quite well with the hydraulic steering and the manual trans on the 997 was a fun little sports car.
nowadays its almost 100k more than a relative m3 and what the fuck do you get? a stripper base interior that looks the same as my hilterbox, digital gauges, even the left turn key has turned into a shitty start button. 220k easily for a trash ass base model carrera that has a subawuuuu engine, trash interior, and not even properly spec'd options. All the while the exterior has grown so large its basically a full size 7 series sedan and yet it still has that goofy fucking beetle face. Why is a beetle in the same price category as a base model ferrari? why is a beetle more money than an aston vantage? These people are insane. Anyone who buys one needs to be executed for supporting fascism. its a fucking beetle, not a god damn exotic car. You can price it like an exotic car, but you're literally in the same company as when those beetles were selling for sub 20k (996's) 10-15 years ago.

Current M cars are actually cheaper than previous gens when you consider inflation and the weak CAD.
Beetle turbos were a value all in one supercar that offered a manual and reliability. But now no more manual, a model 3 performance offer the same 0-100 speed and modern day ferrari/lambos are not unreliable as the old days (mclaren still bad I heard)

agreed! m3/m4's the best performance buy right now. When a lousy 3 cylinder gr corolla is 60k, the performance you get on a base model m3 with a stick is perfect. i built one out the other day, 1600 a month, zero down. Thats basically what the GR corolla is on a lease.

Legitimately though, it's more compact (more interior space), less stuff to break (lower maintenance & repair costs), and cheaper to build (more budget for other stuff). Sounds like a win win win for anybody who doesn't give a damn and just wants to drive at or below speed limit.

Weird that my Corolla has a rear multi-link suspension but still a MacPherson strut up front. Regardless, it's neat and novel, but not a necessity. As you said, it's a car for the common people, not a club racer edition. People can get the Corolla Apex Edition for that.:pokerface::pokerface:

and also got the launch gear CVT across all trims
but the multi-link became torsion beam for LE trim

Most cars have Macstrut front and multi rear, all the 3 series and below cars have that setup. You have to step into a 5 series to get double wishbone front. Even the 911 was Macstrut front until 992.1 when they put double wishbones in the GT3. So your iM is a base 911 :lawl:
Macstruts are cheap, and easy to package and honestly NOT terrible, the downside is just no dynamic camber gain and you have to run big camber on a heavier car to do track work. But honestly, it's a Corolla

The thing with the Corolla is -- only the cheap trims come with the rear torsion beam -- the SE / XSE trims are still equipped with multi-link rear suspension, which means the chassis or subframe needs to be built to allow for both types of suspension to work. So while the rear torsion beam is more compact, it doesn't allow for an interior with more space bcos Toyota is still building the same chassis / interior that has the space reserved for the multi-link suspension.
In the end, it is nothing more than a cost reduction measure.
Now, cars with rear torsion beams can still handle fairly well -- my pos shxtbox Mazda has a rear torsion beam, and it handles relatively well. The MkIV Golf also had a rear torsion beam, and it was reasonable good to drive as well. But of course, a typical Corolla isn't built with driving dynamics in mind...

It's funny you should ask... easy to criticize since I'm in the cheap seats now.
Been out of automotive for a while but it gave me a lot of appreciation for what's just about the world's biggest group project.
I've bounced around a bit - did product planning at the bankrupt Japanese OEM, validation work at another, crash safety at a Big 3, and competed in SAE autodrive.
Still under NDA for most of this work & with Continental.
I still remember one folder with like 50 different docs to fix misaligned interior trim on the RX - seems simple but brutal to actually do.
An small international army of materials, manufacturing, quality engineers loses sleep everytime there's a rumor of problems.
See the shit they did to root cause the Tundra failures:
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2024/RMISC-24V381-8150.pdf
Then think about the supply chain, facilities, manufacturing engineering to decide to make and ship 100k long blocks from Japan instead of having dealers rebuild them.

Toyota's investments these days are in the manufacturing and supply chain side so that they can manufacture and ship more hybrids.
For example, Pre-pandemic supply chains enabled TMMC to make 4-5 RAV4H back to back.
Post-pandemic, parts shortage and reduced staffing means they could only make 2 of them... and even then, doing 2 back to back meant pulling staff from another task.
Weld was also another bottleneck for moonroofs which even LE+ trim had.
It's now gated to XLE/XSE.

They are still double wishbone. Part of the reason why the first Mazda6 was so underrated is because it has double wishbone front. That's what makes the wagon so amazing, comes in stick with the 3.0 V6, with double wishbone.

That is absolutely retarded.
170k for shocks, wheels, brake lines, some aero covers.

Why is it trendy to butcher beetles with hideous and expensive body kits? You got this manthey crap and the japanese guy that chops up 993 beetles
The Manthey stuff is actually functional, unlike the RWC shit where he free hands a fender.

It’s actually not that crazy. Look up how much a set of carbon wheels on the mustang darkhorse costs.
It’s 10k usd. The kids at Aberdeen have 2500 dollar battle aero wings and 4k TE37 on their frs 12k frs.
MT is legit race aero.
Badhobz
09-20-2025, 05:36 AM
Yeah so what ? The stock wheels on my stupid ratrolla from the factory is like 3k per wheel. Doesn’t make it right or “worth it”
Plus it still looks like shit. Legit aero my ass, like you need aero for around here ? The stock gt3RS already has huge aero, you show me where this kit improves lap times vs stock. Especially since you’re paying for basically another beetle worth of money to make it somehow worse.

The Manthey stuff or a Porsche? The Manthey stuff no, 100% no, it's just another mod where you don't get your money back. If it's the car, it's also going to be a no. We haven't seen the bottom of the Porsche market yet. Unless you have a very desirable car, like a 992.2 GT3 Touring in PTS with backseats, you aren't likely to be making money on the car.
I went to look at a 992.1 Carerra T recently and it was sold as an asset that doesn't depreciate, and I wouldn't be surprised if the sales training is for them to sell it as an investment. The Carerra T is cool in stick, but it's not a collectible with the base engine imo. With the way taxes are, there's just no way you can make up 40k of taxes.

It varies season by season but usually they spec out fairly desirable DDs cause they plan on selling them for MSRP a year later. I've had a 992.S with a manual (the only one they said was in the fleet) and a Boxster GTS PDK. I've seen a number of GTS and Targas available as well. No turbos, GT3s, or GT4s though.

Overall it was great - I only did a 1 day (992) and a 3 day (Boxster) rental. Other than gas it's all inclusive and it has fairly generous mileage allowances so you can fit in a nice day trip no problem. It beats renting from 3rd parties which have strict limits on things and who will be ticky tacky on everything. The 718 rate is a bargain IMO - when Hyundais rent for $80-100/day the 718 price is peanuts.
If I had the time I'd definitely grab one for a month and just use all the mileage on a couple road trips. Maybe if they had a carseat that fits in the back of a 911 I could convince the wife that we do it.

Rental in Vegas.
It's a bit of a mindfuck to drive - it's dominated by how you use brakes to control and setup for the rear end swinging around. Have to throw almost my whole bodyweight into the brake pedal.
Car does not like turning unless it’s done right so that u can get on the gas fairly aggressively to rotate the rear but also add even more gas to use the rear engine traction to straighten out.
