LS400 is extremely basic by today’s luxury car standards. What it has in spades is the smoothest engine you’ve ever experienced and things most people probably would never notice like instant ice cold A/C even on a hot day.
I had 2 of them a 94 and a 95. Beyond being quiet and smooth and working very well, there’s not much else there even when I owned them 15 years ago they seemed extremely basic to me. Not fast, use lots of gas, no fancy tech of any sort… and they have some weird things starting to haunt them like the ABS ECU goes bad (soldering issue?) and it’s super expensive to replace.
It would be difficult to recommend one to anyone in this day and age to be honest. A very special car in its time that had a very important role in shaping the auto industry as we know it today, but one best learned about / experienced rather than owned I think.

That's the thing, it's good, but you have to really want one, at $2.2 per liter for 250 hp. If you're driving it stock you better like listening to the radio or cd tapes. Then you have the blown speakers, dead amps.

It's just Honda, Toyota and Mazda that's hella undersizing these.
Domestic AC will freeze your ears off instantly, even on their EVs, and even in humid and standstill traffic.

Honda has the weakest HVAC systems, I thought that was common knowledge lol. My RAM would cool down the cabin so quickly it was insane, it was a black on black truck too.

Are you sure you dont have a dud? Never knew this was a thing
If it is a thing, its just certain brands cutting corners, why install a properly sized ac system, when you can undersize it, still get "cool" air, and save 1000$ x 400,000 production cars

I would get a proper diagnostic on the AC system. My Boxster's AC system had a slow leak, discharging R134a and slowly, the AC slowly got weaker and weaker to the point where it was pointless.
After a proper diagnostic, it was discovered there was a leak at one of the Schrader valves which was placed and recharged etc. After the fix, the AC was ice cold. Sometimes too cold.

Something about old 90s Toyota ACs really hits hard. On my 93 Camry, the AC was ice cold even when it's scorching out. The 03 Highlander no longer had that quality and it was just enough to make you not hot, but never cold. The mechanic said it's blowing cold and part of the problem is the big cabin you need to cool off and the heat just sits in the trunk.
The M3 will get you really cold if you keep moving, but in traffic without airflow, I think the engine products too much heat for the overall system to still be able to shed heat. Same problem with the X3. The X5 being a PHEV doesn't have to contend with engine heat.
Overall I find engine heat to be a huge issue with newer cars, especially something with turbos. My Mazdaspeed3, X3, M3 all have heat soak issues through the cabin. The Camry and Highlander being non turbo and I think generally having more airflow through the engine bay, has less of that problem. The Mini is small enough that it didn't matter and the X5 doesn't generate much heat. The only exception is my dad's Genesis Coupe with the 3.8, that had cabin heat soak problems even though it didn't have a turbo.
