By the time we retire, China will be too expensive unless you want to live in some 3rd-tier backwater. We'll probably be looking at Vietnam or something which will hopefully be where China is today.

Places like Bangkok and Chiang Mai have been developed enough for years to live a 1st world lifestyle if you have a western income/wealth. From what I've been hearing though is Thailand has been stagnating (aging population, middle income trap) and places like VN are catching up at a lower price point. So a lot of the reasons for moving to Thailand are slowly eroding.
Malaysia is a good option too, cheap and near first world living conditions in the big cities but there's always a non-zero chance the Muslim majority there will go full Jihad on your Chinese ass one day.
