It might get ugly, so you may have to weigh the value of the money vs the value of the friendship.
This is why people say don't lend friends money. I don't prescribe to that mantra myself, but I consider any money "loaned" to my friends as gifts. If they pay me back, great. If not, I already made my peace with that before I handed over the money.

Hope your "friend" isn't buying new shit still, instead of paying you back. If that's the case you need to be direct.

If they are truly down and out on luck, you got to finesse it.
