While I don't believe in the hoopla surrounding the whole 2012 thing, I had a random thought...
Everyone seems to think that the "end of the world" means some giant, cataclysmic disaster is going to unfold. But what if it means something entirely different? As far as I can understand it, the Mayans weren't predicting the end of the human race, but simply another shift. What if it's something like contact with peaceful aliens? What if someone reveals to the world that they've created a wasteless, unending power source that can run every nation in the world? What if it's actually a good change?
The Mayans didn't predict anything. The end of the Mayan calander is simply the end of the age we are in. Whoever wrote the bible took that and ran it into end of the world. By age, I mean the current sign we are under, december 22nd is the start of the new age under a new sign, which actually happened back in February because of the leap years. That's it, that's all. Watch the first Zeitgeist film. People can argue about those Films all they want, but he does break down what it's all about. The only argument to it is, NO THAT'S WRONG THE WORLD IS ENDING. That's why bible thumpers and extremists are seen as fucking morons. Posted via RS Mobile

I haven't really looked into the whole Mayan thing since +theone+ / gunmetalteg left Revscene, so I've kinda forgotten a lot of it.
But yeah, the end of the sign/cycle is what I was referring to. The fact that people interpret the sign change as something terrible happening to us is just people trying yet again to tell us that the sky is falling and that we're all going to die. Just once I'd like to see people flip that around and predict that something nice is going to happen. Not gonna ever happen, though.
The only thing that I can picture happening, epecially with all the lunatics in the world, is that someone somewhere is going to try and make the "prediction" come true.

I was actually going to write something along those lines. The IDEA that something is supposed to happen will possibly end up causing those select people to make it happen in their own way.
I was just having a convo with a few buddies about the so-called apocalypse 12/21/12. Some of them are stocking up on food, gas and water.
Since we are a couple months away , have you guys been preparing for this?
Fixed for you.
First, if you and your buddies live in an earthquake zone (ie: YVR) then everyone should have some sort of emergency kit including food and water that last for 5 days. It's nice that your buddies are now prepared for natural hazards that could strike any time.
Second, if it is an apocalypse that has the potential to wipe out the human race and other living organisms then I don't think a few can of food and bottles of water would allow you to survive. And even if your buddies somehow hide somewhere during the event. How long will their food last? and how would the world look like afterward? It might not even be suitable for any habitat after the apocalypse.
Bottom line: prepare emergency kit for natural hazards rather than apocalypse
hmmmm, someone should make a new thread "if the world was to end like predicted"
what would your last day look like??
i remember playing gta for years wondering what it would be like in real life, i guess that would be my goal, set up a huge ramp off a mountain cliff and hit it going as fast as possible!
People started using the "mayans can't even predict their own death" because they think it's a strong argument without studying how the mayan predicts these dates.
I am not saying that it's going to happen or not going to happen, I'm just saying, don't be ignorant.
First, the mayans uses astrology to predict future events. That is why they are so precise on the rise and set of the moon, I think it was by like 0.03 seconds or something.
Second, they MIGHT have predicted their extinction, but death is inevitable. Without the technology we had today, it was probably impossible for them to evade the rapid climate change.
Lastly, as said before, the "end of the world" is not exactly the end. It's just the end of our age and as of 12/21/2012, it will begin a new age. More natural disasters, shifting of consciousness, spiritual awakenings. And by these I mean, people will natural make better decisions, sympathy and empathy might increase for the majority of the population. I can get into details but it would be totally off topic and requires a more intellectual discussion.
Maybe 12/21/12 is the day that technology becomes so freakin' advanced that there is now intergalactic parellel universe time travel so the calendar is no longer used!
The Mayans, Egyptians etc... probably had contact with the space jockey engineers. They gonna be sending those bio weapons to destroy earth in order to recreate life
