BikerX: I think I posted the digital version of that shot before. That was taken with my Leica. I may be wrong though. :p

Moon was pretty big last night too (although it doesn't look so big in this shot)

ckrieg - Great photos, your loving the off camera flash thing aren't you :)

ColinK 08-15-2008 09:21 AM

haha yea for sure! You can do so much with them!

I actually just ordered a third one :)

niforpix 08-15-2008 10:42 AM

^^ is it infrared? Which ones do you have? I just have the Canon transmitter that attaches to my camera, and 580ex flash, but I haven't really got a chance to use it other than few test shots at home. But I think the flash always has to be in the line of sight, no?

ColinK 08-15-2008 11:51 AM

Yes, with infrared, you need line of sight. If you find line of sight a problem for you, check out radio poppers.

I'm actually using Vivitar 285hv flashes with the ebay triggers

I think I'm finally starting to understand how to shoot macro (properly) after screwing around with my camera on my day off. Haven't done macro in months... Unfortunately I didn't have my 580ex on me, and I still don't have a softbox to make the lighting not as harsh.

Focus looks spot on for all 3! Great job. I like the first one best :)

niforpix 08-15-2008 10:09 PM

Thank you sir! :)

Senna4ever 08-16-2008 12:15 AM

For macro, you need a ring flash, not a soft box.

Not necessarily. I've been chatting with this guy on www.thephotoforum.com who uses a 580ex flash and a Lumiquest Softbox for a diffuser. His photos are amazing. Check out his website:

http://www.tcproimages.com/Macro

He doesn't use a ring flash at all and 98% of his shots are handheld.

Senna4ever 08-16-2008 11:12 AM

Is he using the little ones that fit on the flash? I guess that would work, but you wouldn't get the softer, even lighting a ringflash would provide. See how hard the lighting is on his photos? His light source is too far from the subject. I'd guess he's suppressed the specular highlights somewhat in PS.

niforpix 08-16-2008 11:43 AM

Yeah I see what you mean. I guess it's somewhat an alternative to spending $500 on a ring flash.
