| Passport help?
Ok. Applying for my passport because I guess I finally need it even if I'm going across the border to AMPM and I came upon the section where they ask you to get a letter from one of the Gov't's "approved professions".
Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who works in those fields for long enough. I don't have a family doctor as I've been going to walk in clinics whenever I've needed medical attention, I go to H&R Block instead of a private accountant for my taxes, and the principal at my old high school has long since moved on leaving me high and dry for a passport reference.
There are "alternatives" to getting someone to write a letter for you, and I'm wondering if anyone knows what those are, or if anyone knows someone who will write me said letter so that I can get a passport.
Any info would be cool. Thx.

Thats the problem. You have to have known these people for 3 years. I always go to different dentists and doctors, and I have little to no family to speak of, none of them police officers.
Now like Djiban said, there is the alternative method for getting a letter written but I don't know what it is and I don't know how much extra I'll have to pay for it. Was wondering if anyone knew.

Unless you're flying to the states to go to AM/PM, you won't need the passport until 2009.

^agree.
passports are only mandatory for cross border flights, not driving or walking across.
also i think you only need to have know your guarantors for 2 years, or at least thats what it was when i got my passport a year or two ago.

Yea but I hate staying on hold while they finally get around to answering my call and then they quiz me why I don't know anyone for 2 or 3 years, etc etc....
Next thing you know I'm on a list of suspected terrorists and CSIS puts me in a dark basement, etc etc....
But seriously... I haven't really gone to the same walk-in clinic too much, or at least enough for a doctor to know me. And the reason I don't call is because I hate fucking waiting on hold. I really do

I think with a majority of young people, their family doctor doesn't remember them without their chart.

If you dont have a guarantor, go into the office and request a ppt 132
its a statutory declaration in lieu of a guarantor
because its a sworn statement, you need to see either a lawyer / notary public and pay a fee for them to sign it for you and certify it.

Get PP132 from the website.. do not fill out the form at the post office unless you want to wait forever.
Fill it out online. Show up at the passport office so they can verify who you are.. takes less than an hour.

I actually went to the Richmond location on Saba Road to renew my passport about 2 weeks ago.
The doors open at 8:30am
If you want to be one of the first people, you have to get there by 7:40am
The first 20 people isn't bad, but after that, and during the day, you have to wait for fuggin HOURS.....
My suggestion if you go in person, go super early.

An applicant who is unable to obtain the signature of an eligible guarantor is required to complete Form PPT 132, "Statutory Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor". This form must be completed and signed before a Commissioner for Oaths, Notary Public, Justice of the Peace or another official who is qualified to administer the oath. In this instance, it is not necessary for the official to know the applicant personally.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | what he quoted is correct, but misleading for many people. For commissioner of oaths or justice of the peace, you CANNOT use any random person like RCMP officers who may be eligible to be a commisioner of oaths or justices of the peace.
They don't tell you this, but the only time you can use a justice of the peace or commisioner of oaths is if that individual works for the passport office. And unfortunately, no one there at the passport office will do it for you there.
So you are stuck with either a lawyer or a notary public. Keep in mind, both those individuals may also say they are commissioner of oaths, which is fine, but do make sure they are also legitimate lawyers / barrister & solicitors or notary publics

But I don't have to have known them for two or three years, its just a verification procedure right?

Thats right.
They charge a fee to sign it, so yellow pages are your best friend. Call around and find the cheapest one.
Notarys do it cheaper than lawyers, and you are looking at $15-$50 for this.
