Warning ....lengthy post but I would like some feedback please...

I took pictures for a group of friends for their friend page in our yearbook. I told everyone that I charge $10 flat rate. We went to TWO places, we shot for two hours, and on top of that we also drove some of them to the other location. I collected money from everyone, and there are two people who are very hesitant to pay. One of them keeps forgetting, and the other just outright ignores me when I attempt to talk to her. Let me say this again, this is a group of friends in which I consider to be good friends, and the absolute disrespect shown to me by this behaviour leaves me speechless.
So after asking for the money for how long, I finally was supposed to receive one payment today, and I went to talk to the other person about it.. and she says I didn't do this ONE picture.. and so she's not going to pay me till I do that. That one picture, was supposed to be a combination of two shots, one is the background (nighttime city) and then the actual group shot. I simply could not merge the pictures together because there is no outline of the actual group, as everyones hair is black and of course the rest of the picture would be black. How am I supposed to guess at how peoples hair is supposed to be?
I also said that if there were any problems questions or anything to talk to me. Some people in the group did come talk to me, but she never came to talk to me. How would I know what she wants? She ignored my messages on MSN, she ignored in in person AT SCHOOL.. even when I stood right in front of her and called her name. Today then I asked if she had money for me, and she said yea, she would pay me when the other person paid.. but I didn't see him once today at school. So I said fine, and I left. Later on a friend tells me that she said loudly to everyone around her, that she wouldn't pay me. This is angering beyong anything I've ever experienced and I completely exploded. Then she has the nerve to take out her wallet and start throwing out twoonies, counting them.. what an slap in the face. I just left.
How the hell do you deal with people like this? It's just shocking, and for someone that you consider a friend, it's just magnified even more.

b)
Second incident, I was asked to take group pictures of another group of friends. Now.. one of them is adamant about me doing the pictures for free, but I simply can't do them for free because other people have already paid for pictures, it would not be fair at all if they didn't pay for the pictures too. After giving me late notice last night, I then asked about payment and they said "so you wont take pictures unless we pay you?". Well no shit, that's how I've been operating since the New Year and I stand by this strongly. My work and time are worth something, and I should be fairly compensated for it. So.. to make a long story short, at the end of the night we agreed to a time and place and payment.
Now come around to today. At lunch, I was informed by someone in the group that "we don't need you to take pictures anymore, we found someone else [read: to do them for free]". Now what is up with this, you don't personally come to me to tell me but you get someone else to tell me. Have you no respect for me that you can't come be upfront with me face to face? After how many years of friendship this is what we end up with? This is probably the biggest insult I've ever received.

Here's some facts....
$300 for a 8.5x11 page in the yearbook
$10 for 10min @ Artona Studios (local photo studio)

You can spend money on a $300 page but you can't spend $10 on pictures that really have no limit until the time you want to finish and are satisfied. I even offer to go where you want to take pictures, and even offer a ride too. That is just mind boggling.

You say it's unfair to make a decision on other peoples money because of the late notice, but how fair is it to make a decision on my time and work? Time is worth money, and it's my own personal time that I take out to go take pictures, and then edit them for you.

You don't speak to me, but you get other people to talk to me. Have the balls to come talk to me yourself, and stop hiding behind others.

Now the questions...

$10 is cheap, wouldn't you agree?
How would you even deal with all this? I am so close to blowing up, I have never been this angry before.

Highschool kids are cheap...

Take candids of the deadbeats, catching them off-guard in embarrassing poses, then print up a buncha copies and post them all over the school. If they complain, tell them, "This is what you get for FREE." Then show them some of the paid pics and say, "For $10 you could have had this!"

now, u know who ur true friends are... quite sad

kwazy: To your post, I feel sorry that your "friends" would treat you that way. This is why professionals do what they do. If you want to be taken seriously with friends and others in the future, draft up a contract that all parties sign.

I don't care how trivial the task is or if it involves favors. If it is in ink it's the final say. It will back you up in the event of an argument and it will also save friendships. If you can not put yourself to do it, then I would suggest not shooting for friends or family in the future. Kindly decline and refer them to someone else.

As for your questions: $10/person is cheap and is probably why they are taking you for granted. The price you are giving them is also the reason why people think that photographers are cheap. It is ruining an industry, because it lowers the standards of which photography skill and talent are percieved.

At this point, you have nothing to help you with. No contract means your hands are basically tied. Take it as a lesson learned and move on. I would not help them out in the future... PERIOD.
