The start of the test pipe is small and become enlarged (along with the flanges) so you can increase the size? Of course you also have gaskets.

The rubbing depends on what kind of suspension you have. Obviously something that is more stiff won't have as much give so when you go over bumps, it won't rub. That's one explanation, any how.
