拼命三郎 - fight for tomorrow
Knew it was a cantonese film, the actors are well known and casted nicely. Script writer and director did it all himself so I had decent hopes (esp he was the script writer for all the Ip Man movies, as well as a few solid non action films). Given that, i purposely did not read any reviews so there were mixed emotions - from a old and not worthy triad dad who suddenly randomly rescues his long lost son was the premise of the movie.
Son got into an altercation in a boxing training studio with a rich kid and of course, dad helps.
The tone was nicely set, however, turns out the 2 teens's dad knows each other and this hk traid settling comes along talking about old times... eventually settles all scores. Then the movie PIVOTS to fatherly love, let me inspire you son timeline which was all about boxing... wth.
SO that's the only part I didn't like was the sudden dip in style, rocky, thai fighting rink battle it all out ending which did not end there. Movie ends with fatherly vs son bond. Very roller coaster of pivots, extremely well done with good cast (two adults were 56 and 60) and the two dead beat teens also did a good job. (one trained better than the other).
Flow - A Latvian, French, and Belgian co-production of a cartoon. It is NOT pixar. It is not Coco, it is NOT toy story, so with that aside, don't expect the formula, the graphics and the flow (no pun intended) on the movie.
It's about a cat with NO dialogue and follows a cat trying to survive after / during a flood.
Bravo for investing 3.5 M euro and ROI with 50 Million, but doesn't mean I enjoyed the movie. The 'circle of life' theme is there, cause afterall, what else can be it about.
90% of the film worked well andyou know how it connects the dots. There are two spiritual parts which might confuse the heck out of the viewers esp if they are young.
Yes, there's bullying, there's death, but heck.. all movies are like that. Even Toy Story had bullying... so don't be alarmed.
PS - 4.5 yr production on a open source software with no storyboards and no deleted scenes... (well who is there to prove LOL).
WTF did I just watch. This supposed to be post Avengers end game (7 yrs) ... what a joke.
I don't even recognize the director doing any huge debut for the last 13 years (Robot & Frank (2012) - was amazing btw). Then script writer did a decent one who co-wrote; Transformers One so don't blame me for not really appreciating the film (cause the script sucked).
I get it's not happy go lucky, it's not positive hollywood movie, heck, it's not even any hero type film, at least give it a chance.
Positive things were - Julia Louis-Dreyfus; hey coming from seinfield and now to this, she really didn't have a lot of 'good movies debut'. So i'm glad she pulled the role well. The movie has 4 heros, so it's important to start the introduction nice and 'explain' it's after end game, the setup was good, the background of each character was a BIT weak; i did loook past it.
The worse was the introduction of the protagonist was unique, i just didn't think the story was good. The protagonist was so so so powerful, so much more powerful than thanos... so wtf.
Then there were some forced in scenes of a father / daughter dynamic which I did NOT understand. Why add it at the middle of movie. Also at the final battle scene, they aren't super heros, yet they are really sort of powerful being able to lift up concrete.. so it was a bit puzzling.
Anyhoo; i rather watch captain america than this. Please just let these Marvel die.
The Dumpling Queen (2025) - based on a true story. Written by china but directed by HK director (internal affairs). I thought it was extremely well done; mixed with classic 70/ 80s music. Haters from HK bashed it but whatever.
the cast was HUGE esp there were tons of cameos all over. Then add in a few solid, well established story line. The thing that did it for me was the personal relationship / hardship that really did it for me. My dad's family also swam and reached Kowloon / HK, got to stay at relative's house and started fast food noodle house so the entire processes were done well, esp. sticking with the times on a lot of the sets.
TL;DR - lady comes from china and establish wonton empire in HK. Really nicely done.
Watched Heads of State tonight, pretty typical for a movie from a streaming service... had some pretty intense action sequences aboard Airforce 1 and some really cool fights and death scenes, I'd say it's really creative in that regard. Sometimes felt like Elba and Cena didn't have a lot of chemistry even as foils but whether intentional or not it came together better as things went along. Chopra is fuckin amazing in this and pretty hot too.
Jack Quaid has probably one of the best and most badass cameos I've ever seen in a movie lol... his part was an absolute riot.
7.5/10, sometimes the humour dragged a little in spots and lots of jangoism. Cool action scenes with Airforce 1 and "The Beast" (President's car)... and a pretty clumsy condemnation of Trump toward the end that I could have done without even if it's not wrong.
Totally brainless and i knew going in this is NOT JOhn Wick. He did do a few cameo's. What was funny was i recognized it being at Hallstatt as I was just there last year but pretty sure it was green screen.
They didn't make her John Wick, she's tiny, she small and she's 'weak', so it was cool to see it didn't make her superwoman. She did get her ass kicked a few times and overlal the cinamatophy was very similar to John Wick. Will it earn more.. not a all, it just broke even so i'm surprised it even got over 100 m.
Lastly, Lance Reddick was still in the film because they had him in the beginning of film beofre he passed away. (no-nonsense concierge at the New York Continental)
it's brainless but heck, turn off urbrain and enjoy it.
I thought Ballerina was entertaining, but I fear that these John Wick spinoffs won't work without John Wick. While watching the movie, I was waiting for the scenes with him in them... then again, maybe they shouldn't have spoiled his appearance in the movie trailers.

-was lucky to win a pair of advance screening passes from Warner Bros. to watch Superman at the Scotiabank theatre in downtown Vancouver on Monday night.
Pros: Great CGI special effects. -funny scenes in this movie.
-film was shown in IMAX. -great action scenes.
-decent storyline.
-actress Rachel Brosnahan, who plays the lead female role of Lois Lane, is easy on the eyes. The most beautiful Lois Lane in all of the Superman movies.
Online reviews: We need a superhero during these turbulent times of war. People need hope. Director James Gunn brings a big sense of excitement, hope and wonder with Superman.
-definitely felt a sense of hope from this movie.
Cons: Character development and actor performance is meh. Actor David Correnswet had big Superman shoes to fill when Henry Cavill last played the role as the Man of Steel. Is he a better actor than Cavill? Nope.
Overall, the tone of this movie about a DC superhero is of hope, humour, and action. A departure from the dark and suspenseful themes of past DC movies involving Superman, Wonderwoman, etc. Maybe it was the Dark Knight himself Batman, who made those movies feel more dark haha.
finally saw this and didn't thnik it was bad. I enjoyed the humor at times was crap. Chemisty was a lvoe hate relationship because of their character and it jsut made it all work in the end.
Action was really fast paced, new angles, new action, nothing too fancy, just fast and 'new' - just glad it wasn't john wick ass kicking.
John S did a solid job, he ain't arnold, and he ain't the rock but it was a decent cast.
brainless and ok movie to be on streaming platform.
Directed by Alex Garland, most recently of Civil War.
Starring Will Poulter (cameo chef from the Bear), the metalhead older Brother from stranger things, the kid from the amazing show Reservation Dogs, and the heartthrob from May December, Charles Melton.
Relatively short runtime of 1hr30m but extreme intensity of war.
Basically shows when a basic operation goes wrong. Very authentic war scenes, very gutting.
Dunno how I missed this but a great demo of a good home theater system.

man the first one I remember was great. I did not rewatch it and this one definitely did NOT work.
I did enjoy the 1st part's "car" scene, with some new filming angle but holy moly, what a trash script compared to the 1st. Screenplay was done by the same person but the director totally changed.
Victoria Mahoney has not done movies so having her do this might be the issue.
The diaglouge was shit, Uma Thurman cant' act no more (55 yrs old), Charlize Theron
despite 49, still looked good.
I didnt' like the direction this took, the action sequence was crap but hte story just didn't jive anymore.
To be clear, I never watched the movie or the cobra kid series last few years (did hear it was awesome).
The script didn't make sense at first, but when you throw gasoline to a fire and just keep it burning so fast, the viewer just stays put in their car seat along with the ride. Scenes were super fast, editing was extremely smooth and it had no time to break and rebuke what's wrong. Zero character development cause it's most likely dads taking their kids who don't need nothing to develop on the back story.
Oh yeah, what the heck, no one goes to NY and starts speaking english despite you went to an International school.
Few nuggets - lady who played the mother play Chun Li back in 1994 Street Fighter.
Not sure who casted; have to say it was solid. Ben Wang was a skinny chinese kid who was getting picked and it fit eht role. I have to say the American born Chinese series he did helped him out a lot (star power wise).
What didn't work...well the 1st 40 mins of the movie was really Joshua Carter Jackson - yes he did a few big shows but this story line was really weird. We were skratching our heads when would Karate kid portion bubble up as it's almost 1/2 the movie.
Yes there were some love interest (thank goodness it was brief and non cringy) and surprisingly Sadie Stanley did a solid job with the chemistry.
Wife and I enjoyed it, Jackie Chan did NOT do well in China with this but heck, who else coudl you ahve casted? Donnie yen LOL
The hollywood formula is pretty standard however, given if you have a PG 13 movie targeted for 12-16 yr old this is your movie. Positive, no sex, decent fights and a bit of humor... you got a winner.
PS there are easter eggs right at credits.
PPS movie was filmed in Montreal and Quebec = Desjardins towers' green lights and Jardin Botanique Chinese Gardens.
You have time to watch all these shitty direct to Netflix movies, but not the original Karate Kid? That should be your next one, followed by the sequel (you can skip the rest)
Fox Hunt
It was filmed and produced 2021, but somehow post production and other issues made this a much later release.
China and France never had extradition in place yet; so 5 days before, China sent cops to catch Tony who was the IT guy who made this fake Goldman sacs fund who cheated billion of dollars.
I did praise the movie being filmed in France, aside from that, maybe because I'm jaded, but screen writer in China just suck in making action thrillers.
Crappy tension, lackluster cast, french police (actors) were just useless - they all dressed as if they were bums from the streets...
All China made movies have to have a good ending so you know how it ends. I also had a tough time with their poor english enunciations.
Huge investment but movie ROI was crap. Guess as an actor you don't care cause you already got yoru paycheck.
Few nuggets - lady who played the mother play Chun Li back in 1994 Street Fighter.
Ming Na Wen has been in quite a few memorable roles over the years, with Agents of Shield and Book of Boba Fett being the more recent ones.

I dont' watch much series, so I don't get exposure on the more recent references, my bad LOL.
No worries, she hasn't done much in film-wise lately, and TV series aren't for everybody!

Big Deal 2025, great korean movie about 1997 when the stock market + a national company that makes soju. How a fund company out of NY tries to take control of a company that's bleeding money. A very witty, human greed + a bit of stock market planning of a movie.
Yoo Hae-jin is a famous dude in the movie, he is not the best looking guy yet he gets casted by a lot of movies that fits him. (Confidential Assignment 2: International, Taxi Driver).
The script was actually very decent and you're waiting till the end to see what's going on. Some parts were a bit werid but maybe it was a cultural thing but it was well worth the watch. it was pretty nostalgic to see them whipping out their startac flip phones. Only thing is their korean english was really hard to follow.
《私家偵探》Behind the Shadows - louis koo movie. This was based / filmed in malaysia area and what was seen as thriller was well worth the ride. Finally a semi decent script. Private Investigator following up on leads and somehow got himself involved.
Ending was medicore yet the entire movie was good. Producer was the guy who did last yr's best hk movie ( i thought it didnt' deserve it) (《九龍城寨之圍城》(英語:Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In).
Louis Koo played well, the cop played well, all the other supporting cast were HK so it made it feel more of a hk movie.
Appreciate the script, just a bit weak on final ending portion.
