You can only go with another company for comprehensive if I'm not mistaken. Your basic coverage still has to be with ICBC (and that's the biggest chunk of it)

The only part of your insurance that you are required to have with ICBC is basic third party liability (up to $250k IIRC). Liability in excess of $250k, comprehensive, and collision policies may be found on the market.

Holy crap. Is a 98 Honda Prelude even worth 4200?
OK, yes I know the insurance is for more than just your car (it's also for bodily injury to yourself and others) but still...$4200 is steep!

i posted in another thread but no one seems to reply

wtf is the point buying 2-3 mill coverage when u are seriously injured like some of the member who posted with a 8000 dollar collision yet ICBC barely shells out $2000-5000 dollar of payment? like seriously
not even $10 or 100g, how the hell are u suppose to get $1-2 million dollar out of ICBC? if its impossible i dont see the point of buying 3 mill coverage
i guess u have to be a vegetable, half dead, run over couple times, broken body parts flying everywhere, than gang raped....perhaps ICBC will give u $50 grand with some change

elaborate plz?

You buy insurance to protect yourself against things that you can't afford to pay for. Third party protects you against stuff that YOU do to OTHERS.

What happens if you are liable in an accident where you convert a 35 year old neurosurgeon into a quadraplegic? You're looking at 20+ years of lost earnings, lifetime medical care, etc etc etc etc. Do the math - the zeroes can add up quickly.

It's up to you to decide to insure yourself against this, or not.

I've met someone who apparently had a massive insurance payout. He's "financially set for life" but by god, I would never ever ever want to trade places with him. He's reasonably coherent but you can tell that he's not entirely there. He'll need the insurance money, because I don't think he's employable.

QFT. My aunt got hit head on at fairly high speed by some dumbass that went straight right down a turn lane. The impact shattered both her ankles, and she will never have full range of motion in her feet/ankles ever, even after surgery. She has to walk with a cane for the rest of her life. She's still working with ICBC on a settlement, but basically ICBC is most likely footing the bill for this.

It's things like this that the 3rd party liability is paying for. Sure the car is trashed, and to be honest, will be the "cheapest" part of the bill. It's the medical, rehabilitation and lost earnings that will be the big chunk, and it doesn't take much to hit a million dollars.

I understand wat u guys are saying, of course u gotta buy insurance

my complaint is just that after reading some members accident thread ICBC does not pay out very nicely, considering the coverage we tend to buy.

I mean hell who the hell wants to get injured for couple thousand dolllar? WOULD U???

Like i stated b4, one of my friend was crossing the street and got hit by a car turning left luckily slow speed but she rolled couple times. But the point of the story is ICBC gave her $1000 dollar for bruises and cuts, sure she is alive and all that but WTF, i will buy every ICBC employee to get hit by a car and pay them $1g just to watch them roll and video tape that shit so i can post it on youtube

ridiculous

As sad as it is, they are a business and they're out to make money.

They're like an RS Buy/Sell lowballer - they want to get the most for the least...

People already complain that their insurance is too expensive. If ICBC were to start generously compensating injuries, who do you think the costs get passed onto??

You can't have it both ways....
