Actually, a Korea/China reunification topic would be political and not racist as long as it doesn't involve insults. But I do have to say that SFUDropout has some blind patriotism going on here. You have to realize that a large part of RS are some variant of Chinese (Taiwan, HK, Mainland, CBC) and, relatively speaking, the level of "China Bashing" is low.

One of the things my friend said to me when she came to visit from the states is how ugly our skyline is. Too many glass buildings and generic looking condos.
In an area of the world thats expecting a significant earthquake we seem to be in love with building towers constructed seemingly from only glass and concrete. I'd hate to be in the street when the big one hits and be greeted with a shower of bloody death.
Vancouver's highrise architecture is cheap, looks cheap, and will prove to be unsafe.
Also, why do we need so many windows in a city that gets so much rain?
|
Funny that you say this because many of our so called "cheap and unsafe highrises" in the downtown core have won awards for design. Oh and the serria building downtown is one of the most earthquake safe buildings on the planet.
And about your windows comment, i can only guess that you havent been up a few floors to realize when you look out the window at the amazing veiw we have. From my apartment i get a 250 degree veiw. Spanning from false creek all the way around english bay and to the far left i can see grouse mountain. Also im guessing that people dont like working in caves and like the sunlight coming through.

They separated what, couple hundred years ago? Only arrogant Mainlanders would even think about it that way; which is 'whatever we once owned should reunite with mother China'. Hell, that's like British guys asking for America, India and half of Africa and another 1/3 of the planet to reunite with England.

Hong Kong Chinese? are you serious?
I have no comment, my dad's past HK friends who are top executive at various companies have praised how the reunification with China has helped Hong Kong's economy tremendously, no jokes. You can tell by just shopping in Hong Kong, everything is back to normal and prices arn't cheap anymore. Things are actually more expensive now, you know before when Hong Kong's economy was shit? when China opened doors to Hong Kong's tourism, BOOM! please don't deny.
Most of my friends are from HongKong and i'm from China, yes, they love the easy gold digging whores(i don't mind either), but they also want to work in China and make a crazy living there.
When you talk about mainlanders, think about what we did to help thrive "HK Chinese" economy, please, all this shit talking won't get you anywhere. Especially when you have this attitude about "mainlanders", cause you know what? if you wanna make money in Hong Kong, you better fucking know mandarin.

Sunlight, when we get it, is nice. I'll admit the city is gorgeous during those six weeks we have nice weather each year. What I really meant with the rain comment is the dust and pollen and grime coating the windows which much be a bitch to constantly have to clean.
But the safety issue wasn't about building crashing down, it was about glass shattering when structures begin to shift. I'm not opposed to the idea of glass but the cookie cutter style of construction in this city contributes to the drab feeling.

They're built to shatter into the room and not onto the street below.

you make it seem like it was charity that the mainland trades with hongkong.

than the british colonial era. It's going downhill, not up. "Helping", only the rich
people. They got richer cause they paid money to get access to the market
in china.
seriously, between 1980-1997...it's hk's golden time. then asian crisis, IT
bubble, SARS, H5N1, edison&gill, government scandels, and Fei Fei's daughter.

China sucks. My grandfather on my moms side was put in hard labour for over 20 years because he wrote about the lack of freedoms in communist China and my other grandfather was killed by the communist chinese for being a canadien citizen and going back to China to marry my grand mother.

Design? What design?
I'm in design, and the best work I see is naked women everywhere!
