+1, get something fatty and bone in if you're going to a good steak house.

"The tenderloin is like the Paris Hilton of steaks... Not alot of fat and very little personality"

Went to the Keg last night.

I almost always order the rib steak because of the fat marbling. However, they have changed the menu and the rib steak is now bone-in. Is it a difference cut?

I was dissapointed with it since it was not as marbly as the rib steak before and not as flavourful.... Guess I'll be ordering the prime rib at the Keg from now on...

Rib steak = bone-in rib steak = prime rib.

Not in-town, but went to Morton's in San Juan, Puerto Rico several years ago on a business trip where my wife would get fully reimbursed for meals. I ordered a double porterhouse steak, french onion soup, and a dessert. My wife bet me I couldn't finish it, but I did. I was so full she had to partially carry me back up to the hotel and I had to sit up for a couple hours on the bed, but it was worth it :accepted::fuckyea:

new york strip loin is the perfect cut for me :sweetjesus:

the 12oz new york strip loin with 4 mush demi, fries and asparagus at Cactus Club Cafe is to die for.

I would still go back to Gotham's hands down. Even though a steak is $50 bucks, I can share half of it, order some sides and I'll end up stuff anyways.

Only went once though, probably sometime this summer or for my birthday.

+1 for Gotham's.

Culverin 04-28-2012 09:05 PM

I've not been to Hy's or Gotham's yet.
The 2 have always been on my list to go...
But honestly speaking, I've never actually had steak at a restaurant that I was happy with. I'd rather spend my money on a nice cut of beef and just do it at home.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

+1 for this wonderful idea. Truthfully restaurants have to be consistent but most are hit or miss. Some reviews said Gotham's are really good while some say it ain't. Remember to tell the server how you would like the steak.

You're getting just a little bit above and over yourself.

Don't mean to be arrogant, but are those really the only places in the city to go to get a decent steak?

Obsideon 04-28-2012 11:31 PM

They are the 2 most renown high-end steak houses, very consistent. I've been to Hy's twice (cheese bread :sweetjesus:) and Gotham's once (too poor) but both are very good. Gotham's edges out Hy's though.

On a side note I really liked Mortan's too, too bad they closed down, I wonder why they couldn't compete? They have some good quality food and service too ... maybe bad location?

Bonka 04-28-2012 11:50 PM

I remembering hearing something about their rent going through the roof..

I do agree Morton's was probably the best cooked steak I've had in town. Have to "settle" for Hy's...

BlackZRoadster 04-29-2012 12:17 AM

I've been to Hy's probably 30 times or more.

Gothams three times only.

Depends what you mean by "decent".

Specialty steakhouses are obviously going to be better than the all-around casual dining restaurants (Earls, Joeys, etc)

When it comes to those places, I think Cactus is the best out of the bunch.

Go spoil yourself for a nice steak dinner (not tenderloin) at a steakhouse. You'll notice the difference right away.

No votes for the Brave Bull on Clark and Hastings?!? C'mon man! The prices ($10 all in) have not changed in years as the owner says it'd cost to much to update the signs.

Seriously though, credit to Cactus Club and Earl's for their consistency of steak - they have these fancy infrared dual sided burners that they use to grill their steaks so there's no talent required to get them right. It' s not great steak but it's certainly good solid stuff that's usually error free.

I like Hamilton Street Grill for their relaxed style and good value - I love the hanger steak they make although they aren't as consistent with how cooked they make their steaks.

A long gone favourite of mine is Rex Grill that used to be in the financial area and they shut down after Cactus Club opened up across from them on Burrard.

sonick 04-29-2012 11:37 AM

Hy's was rated best steakhouse in Vancouver by Vancouver Magazine.

PJ 04-29-2012 12:27 PM

I actually prefer Hy's and Keg over Gotham as well, but I might've just had an unlucky experience at Gotham.

And regarding Cactus and Earls.. I usually don't go for their steaks unless I happen to be there and I'm really craving one.. After having the steakhouse cuts, anywhere else's steaks seem pretty mundane.

HSG should have their anniversary month deal in June IIRC
