The owl #26 is kinda cool but I'm with Skinny; they don't translate well into a tattoo at all.

i'm kinda new to getting inked..
but my friend told me that his his friend's artist Yong Mo is coming from over seas and i'm not sure what to expect..
i'm split between deciding whether to choose him or finding someone in the area..
i got a few questions for you guys that have gotten tattoos before and know how all the planning works like ;
have you gotten any of your pieces done by him??
and if so is he comparable to the artists here?
would artists be willing to copy or do it their own variation if theres another tattoo that is near if not exactly what you want?
and also how long does an outline of a full tiger back tattoo take?
much appreciated!!

You should just check out his artwork and see if it matches the style you want. As far as copying goes I don't think you will have that much luck, most likely the artist will want to make the image suit their style. As far as how long the outline will take it all depends on just how much is being done, if it's something crazy could be 15+. Why are you wondering about the outline only though? Also there is a tattoo convention going on next weekend in Vancouver, maybe you should go there to be exposed to more artists, maybe one will really appeal to you

NEVER GO TO ANY TATTOO ARTIST ON WORD OF MOUTH RECOMMENDATION ALONE!!!! it doesn't matter if he is is super talented, he might not be YOUR style. so no you should not go to Yong Mo right now because it seems like he is the only artist you have check out and you are basing this on what your frd said. Look up Yong Mo's work, look out other local artist's work make your own conclusion, better yet just go to the convention and check out all the artist and expand your mind on what tattoo can be. There is really no rush to get any tattoo.

As for "copying". Some artist will do exactly the picture you brought them if its the style they do and its not a crap picture. (for example don't expect horiryu to do you a sailor jerry flash). Most would prefer to put their own little touch on it. Especially most of the picture you are looking at online are probably from the work of other famous tattoo artist like shige etc. Putting in a little bit of their own flair will turn the piece in to "i copy shige" to "inspire by shige".

outline depends on how complicated your backpiece is going to be and your actual physical size, generally outline is done in its entirety on the first session. I say for a japanese back piece 5-6 hr for outline? but than again it totally depend on the content, the speed of the tattooist and how well you can sit.

The time of the outline varies.. Some artist work quick and some are slower. Depends on the amount of detail in the piece and of course the amount of experience the artist has. Most likely you can show him how you want the tiger and what's in it. Such as head faces a certain way and the stance of the tiger and things you want incorporated such as cherry blossoms and the color scheme you want. Doubt an artist would copy the picture exactly because they'd want to make it a style theyre comfortable with. I know Horiryu won't work off a sketch that you bring in. But if you give him a list of how you want the tat then he'll work to that.

nope, its a chance for ya and the artist to get exposure to one another, you can sign for an appointment with em, but they usually are fully booked at the convention

I've never been to one but artist usually don't go there to sit around waiting for customer. There are however travelling artist that goes from convention to convention and the only way to get tattoo by them is to catch them at one of the conventions and hope he/she has time. Is it also possible to get lucky if one of the artist has a flaker and you would be able to get in if the artist likes your idea. My buddy got tattoo by paul booth this way, lucky bastard.

Its more of a show and tell for the artist and chance to win awards for their work. Don't go in expecting you will be able to get tattooed there but there might be tattoo related products for sale.
