Attention all Noobs and Lurkers

I'd like to get to know some of you, your background and why you're on the photo forum lurking around. We all had to start from somewhere, and none of our photos looked good to start with! Don't feel intimidated, we all went through the C&C boot camp. This is the only way you'll learn!

Lets start off by introducing yourself and telling us a little bit about your background in photography. Tell us what you're looking to learn!

I'd like to say I wasn't very good when I first started posting on RS and this was only 4 years ago. With some time, dedication and passion, you can can learn a lot by just being more active! I learned a lot from RS the day I started posting my photography, and I hope for all of you to do the same.

Don't be afraid to post or ask questions in our PhotoLab Daily Showcase

Please introduce yourself in here or our old Love at first lens thread

We even have a Self Portrait thread that I like to keep updated

This link will give you a quick rundown of the rules and popular thread links you can visit and post

Cheers, Tomasz

Ok ill go first lol. My name is Andrew Caie, Ive been into cars for many years and Ive always been jealous of other peoples pics of there cars lookin so good. I have had a few well equiped civics over the years and now a honda fit. So I got into photography for automotive purposes. Now I hate taking out the camera to shoot cars, its grown on me alot making pretty pictures and creating moments of my 3 year old son Maddox that will last forever. I still have shit loads to learn. Mostly I want to learn how to shoot in Manuel mode. And would like my pics to come out alot sharper. I am not rich buy any means lol so saving up for more equipment such as lens and flashes exetera is a tad slow lol, but I am determined and have a passion for this great but expensive hobby. As of right now I only shoot with a Nikon d60 with kit lens, but almost have enuff money for the nikon 12-24mm f/4g if-ed lens and then some sort zoom. thanks

i'd like to post up the pics i took, but since i just got into photography, and shooting with the kit len (XTi w/ 18-55 non-IS) without IS, all the images came out blurry because of my dam handshake... so i'll need to get a lens with IS...

I have zero photography experience.
and currently in no shape (time and money, I suppose) to get into photography

so I resort to appreciating others' photography

on a side note, I really like your automotive shots Mana

I was the yearbook photographer in my last year at HS. I shot with my dad's Nikon FE2 and the school supplied me with unlimited rolls of film, processing too! After high school I worked my first pt job at Future Shop where I earned enough cash to buy a brand new Canon 10D. I lost about $2k on that, switched to a 20D 2-3 years later. Met some fellows who used 5Ds *cough*, lost some more money, but during that time made some great friends and now I'm using that 5D to make some side cash .

No formal training, just lots of shooting. I remember when I use to bang off as many shots on my camera as I could. Now I take as few as possible. Photography can be a money pit, *grrr.

I guess I am a semi-lurker. I've been always in awe and amazed at landscape photography. I guess that where I started. I wanted to produce images that were amazing and that really captured the "feelings" of the moment. I've been shooting with an Canon Powershot S2 IS. I haven't gotten a real DSLR yet, but I am anticipating to purchase either a Canon 40D or a 50D later this fall.

I've been roughly shooting lightly for about 4-5 years now. Some of my work is in my flickr. My friends all like the photos I shoot. But they are nothing compared to what real photographers produce. Mananetwork, Senna4ever, Ronnin, MikesJo, Doc, and others (rest of the photography crew) all produce really really good and amazing photos. That is why I come here. Also learn about photography. I have posted some of my photos before into the photo lab daily showcase.

I come here to learn and gain experience in all aspects of photography. But I guess my main progression would be nature/landscape (thats what i wanted from the start). learning comes from trial and error. Thus I opted for a S2IS first.

Btw great thread!!

You know, there's nothing really wrong with a kit lens... you just need to learn other ways to use your camera to avoid the shake. Things like IS aren't "magic wands" that will instantly fix all your pics.

Post some of your work up, and maybe we can give you some tips to avoid the problems you're having! It's possible you could be using a higher shutter speed, or a tripod or other sort of brace, to reduce camera shake.

Here's a tip for everyone, too, especially if you're looking for C&C: almost all cameras embed EXIF metadata in JPEG files, that contain all sorts of information about the shot. When you edit your pictures, keep that intact (some programs give you the option to not save it), and when you post them, use a host that doesn't remove the information (Facebook strips it, for example). That information can be helpful in determining "what went wrong".

I'm not a lurker per se... but I started photography in highschool to have easy credits and get out of hard work... Learned all the foundations then but really didn't think much about it. After highschool I kept shooting film, shot a couple of weddings, portraits of friends. I moved to digital (Canon S2 IS) shortly after graduation and realized the transition was a bit different. Spent a good 4 months learning the limitations and differences between the two mediums. Bought my first dSLR (10D) from Domani and never looked back. Shot 7 weddings that year and the year after I moved onwards to a 5D. Then... I infected Mananetwork and MikesJo to buying one hahahahaha!!!! PS: If I ever let you play with my gear... be careful... it's a trap to spend more money... Just ask them... kekeke

From that point on I've moved upwards to shooting about 30 weddings a year.
I've met lots of great friends here on RS, for those lurking, you really can't find a better place to learn for FREE. If you spend time and really apply yourself and post photos for critique, you'll get better quickly. Don't let your equipment be your excuse for poor pictures. Learn to shoot with what you have, good images can come from any setup.

Landscapes are where I got started, almost by accident. My sister had a little Kodak point-and-shoot that she never used; I got a roll of Konika film from a mail-in offer and loaded it up. One of the results was this shot:

actually here's a comment i would like to make. There seems to be not enough CC on photo's posted in the daily photography thread unless the "poster" is known amongst the photography group, and there is quite a bit of offtopic discussion in it which just keeps bumping the thread before anyone actually has a chance to take a look at the photo's posted.

I'm a bit of a lurker. I think I may have posted a few times in here.

I kinda took on photography from the influence of my dad. It's a hobby of his, and being around him a lot, I took on a bit of an interest in it. I haven't really graduated to a DSLR yet, and still working with P&S.

I've gone through a bunch of P&S cameras - starting with a Kodak DC4800, then to a Canon S400, then an SD550 and currently using an SD870. I bought a K100 for my dad last Xmas (since he's a Pentax fanboy and got a bunch of Pentax lens already). I'm hoping to start learning to use a DSLR with his camera one of these days.

I'm mostly here to learn a few techniques and get some inspiration from the pros here. I think photo composition is my weakest point, as I don't have a single creative bone in my body. Most of my pictures are the subject centered on the picutre, so they're sometimes "boring". I use some of the pics and the critiques from the veterans to get ideas on photo composition.

I'm also intrigued by night photography and it's something I'm experimenting with when I have the chance.

you shared.... but apparently you don't count. =)

my turn to share i guess

i've always been a bit of a shutterbug, just shooting randoms and more randoms with my digi p&s (acutally was the family's so i didn't get to use it much), then i took a course focused on photography, and haven't looked back. i've spent more money than i can justify, but thats only on my budget. compared to dspirit, mikesjo, and the "avid" members, its probably a drop in the bucket. but i'm broke and i always want to spend more. unfortunately i have had no time to shoot lately so i've gotta get my feel back for my camera.

well there's my little spcheel (sp?)

I can't remember the wide end, but the S2is had the "equiv. of a 432mm zoom on a full frame camera" which is quite amazing for the price. I also like the super macro mode, it could focus from 0cm, if something was touching the front of the lens, it could still focus on it. Try that with a DSLR

Damn I wrote a bit and all of the sudden the page went back. Oh well, to sum it up, I've never touched a camera until 4 years ago and picked up a DSLR 3 years ago. Now I have a full set of lens and studio equiptments. I like to shoot people and cars. But my main focus is people photography, ranging from weddings to portraits. Revscene is great to learn photo stuffs!

I usually browse through but don't often post but it's always good 2 read about others suggestions and experiences. I was always shooting with a P&S then thought I wanted to get into photography further so I grabbed my Dad's old manual Nikon and started playing with that. Learning on a film camera became kinda expensive so I ended up buying a 20D about 4yrs ago. That opened the gate for me although I really didn't practice as much as I should have. Started out shooting mostly landscapes and some sports photography for friends. Now i've been shooting alot of panorama's, cars and trying to improve my Macro photography.

Ummm this has just reminded me that I owe some of you pictures from the RS photomeet!!! I'll have 2 look in my camera bag the E-mails r still in there, sorry for the delay.

Hey guys the name's Romel. I got interested in photography because of the Automotive shots thread and the daily photography showcase thread. I only wanted to get a P&S that could produce the type of pictures I saw in the threads but another forum member advised me that if I wanted that quality I would have to look into a DSLR. This was about a year and a half ago, jobless with no money so a DSLR was not an option. I started working and saved up some money. I got my D40 in March and I have been shooting ever since. I am still a beginner and I have so many things to learn. Currently I'm just shooting with an 18-55mm and a 50mm prime with an SB600 as a flash. I really want to improve on everything right now. I also want to see how it is to be on the set of a shoot.

It's actually better than it looks there - that's a scan from an old beat-up 5x7 print using a very old beat-up scanner.

Shot at 51°22'58.68"N, 120°42'50.48"W :-)
