I typically lurk on a Revscene. Only recently have I piped up a bit more. So the photography forum should take no offense
Let's see:
- No formal training
- Had an XT.
- Bought a bigger, badder camera (40D) thinking I would have better pictures. Big mistake. Sold it off, and scaled back to an XSI
- Mainly using a 50mm prime so I can focus more on framing my subjects and to develop a better understanding of my camera's manual settings.
- I love shooting cars.

It CAN give better results, especially if your skills/experience allow you to use the extra features, but better results don't just magically come with better gear.

Indeed. Lacking the formal training, I didn't take the time with the XT to really feel as if I had hit a ceiling with it. Had more money then brains, bought the 40D and felt completely overwhelmed. I actually stopped taking photos for some time because I felt like an idiot holding it.
The XSI feels a touch more user friendly and simple to me.

^Ah, living proof of what I keep telling people: the "best" camera is the one that feels right TO YOU. Not the one that the Nikon and Canon evangelists tell you is best, not the one that has minutely better specs in one category or another, but the one that actually gets used, because you ENJOY using it.
Personally, I love my 40D, but it is a good bit bigger and heavier than my old Digital Rebel (300D), and a LOT bigger and heavier than my buddy's XTi... but I like the hefty feel and make good use of some of the better features (like the 6.5fps framerate). My brother has an XT, and as nice a camera as it is, it's almost too small for me.

Kev | lol.. i know people who have a plethora of L glass and are shooting with full frame pro bodies who are still don't understand how to use the manual settings so you're not the only one.
The thing is you realized your mistake and took a step back. Good job |

So umm.. my uncle pretty much handed me his mint condition Canon 30D with the lens kit to me, and here I am trying to figure out how to use the camera to its full potential! I've been lurking this forum since the day i've became an RSer. I still gotta pick up the basics of the camera settings! Knowing myself, it's quite confusing for me to learn from reading since I'm more of a hands on learner. As for now, I look around on photoblogs and on RS for some inspiration. It's quite hard to motivate myself to go out and take pictures (I live in Surrey) and it just sucks.
For now, I can't really say I wanna focus on one type of photography from the rest (fashion, automobile, scenery.. etc) cause I haven't explore each field to its fullest yet.
Here's my VERY VERY first shot with my camera.. I didn't had a tripod so it was all hand held, not the best but I like it since it's my very first picture i've taken on an DSLR |

| I'm exactly the same. Here's a suggestion: find someone who DOES understand all that, and go spend a day shooting with them. I did just that for the aforementioned friend who picked himself up an XTi and wanted to learn more... we went to the Aquarium, Horseshoe Bay, and Queen E Park. He'd take some shots, look at them, explain what he was trying to achieve... I'd give him pointers on using his manual settings to get what he was after. He was frustrated by not being able to focus close enough with his EF 50mm f/1.8, and not being able to get wide enough with his kit 17-55 lens, so between Horseshoe Bay and Queen E., we stopped at Kerrisdale cameras, and since he knew the kind of shots he was looking for, decided to buy himself an EF 10-22, and an EF 60 f/2.8 macro (and gave me his EF 50 since it was now extraneous ) Since then most of his work has been with his macro and his wide lenses.
While we were shooting at the Aquarium I was lamenting not having a monopod, and he was lamenting his cheap video tripod, so the next day we went to Kerrisdale again, where he bought Manfrotto tripod and monopod, with matching ball heads for each... and was about to buy me the same monopod and head (since I already have the Manny tripod and head), except they were out of stock. He bought me a bunch of other gadgets and what not though - his thinking was that he could have paid far more for a course, and not learned nearly as much as he had in one day hanging out with a friend he doesn't get to see very often. What are you using to view/edit/organize your pictures? For an easy *and free* starter, I'd suggest Picasa - it's quick and has some excellent basic editing features, plus you can easily upload to PicasaWeb photo galleries, and there's a plugin for easy uploading to Facebook as well.

I asked him why he's giving it away, he told me he didn't take much pictures on it (>1000 shots) and think I would make more used out of it.
Within my group of friends, none of them owns a slr/dslr camera. So i'm all by myself! Seems like that trip you planned with the guy was awesome! He must be rich or something buying lenses so quick lol. But yeah all I got on me is the 30D body + EFS 18-55 lens + battery grip + tripod.
Yeah anywhere can be a great place to take pictures, I just gotta get used to knowing what settings to use for the location etc..
I have some knowledge of photoshop, so i'm using that to edit my pictures. I also have Light Room too so yeah.. I have had tried out Flickr and this one other site "PHO.TO". But as of right now, I don't have much pictures to upload and share

lurking because i need some ideas for class :S
If anyone goes to sfu, i'm taking iat100 trying to take pictures for first project due monday haha. Basically theme is "self as place" and we have to take pictures that describe our self, but i have yet to think of any good shots. Was thinking of taking shots related to sports or active things i like boxing or dance. Help with ideas of shots would be nice, need to take 3 pictures relating to one another.

hey everybody, i JUST bought a new camera. took the plunge, and decided to go for the 1000d (XS), because it was £150 cheaper than the cheapest 450d i could find around here... went on ebay and got myself a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 lens as well - along with some filters and an 8gb card. now i just gotta find time to take some pictures.
i've been reading things here and there in this section - trying to pick up little tidbits. i'll post some beginner pictures as soon as i get started. all i've been really doing is taking pictures of my room and my housemates cuz i've been working so much. one of my roomates has the original Rebel XT, the other has an XSI, so i kinda got pressured into it - sooooo... we'll see how it goes.

I originally considered photography as a way to just take pictures of my completed gunplas but then I soon forgot about that, cause well I was like 10.
I then found a friend on facebook who was taking a lot of pictures with his sony a300 and since then I've found more and more inspiration to start taking pictures. Also found a lot of insipration from this forum.
I'm currently saving up some money for a Nikon d40 because well it seems to be a good beginner camera but also because I used a friends for a day, and it just felt so much nicer in my hands compared to a canon xsi and a sony a200. I'm only 15 and this is something I am really interested in and well I hope I can reach my goal of getting that camera and turning into a great photographer like many of you here on revscene.
Any tips, pointers, information whatever you guys can provide me will be greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah, well my parents supportish my new found love of photography, all lenses, cameras etc will be 100% funded by my own hardwork. Hahaha just so I don't come off as some snobby trust fund kid.
Lol just realized how fob this message sounds
