That's USD though, so it'll probably be around the $3k mark in Canada. The exchange rate is 1.07 right now.

Damn straight. D700 = 12MP, no video, $3.2-3.4k.

It'll be awesome for those who sell stock photography. Now they can sell stock video clips as well.

I wouldn't be so hasty to condemn the D700. Off the top of my head the D700 has a faster flash sync speed, built-in flash (which also operates Nikon CLS flashes as a Commander without needing an external flash or wireless controller), can shoot 8 FPS with battery grip and has a built-in AF illuminator.

We'll need to wait for a full review to see the ISO performance, image quality and how the camera "handles".

It looks pretty damn good so far, but I don't think it obsolesces the D700 overnight.

I'm sure Nikon will come out with something like that as well, if they haven't already. It will always be a never ending battle

Yep, I don't know what that guy is talking about. Until we see samples from the 5DmkII, the D700 has incredible image quality at high ISO and shoots at 8FPS.

exactly. but, as a "nikonian", i have to admit... *on paper*, this is a pretty big move for canon... for a long time they've been a little bit ahead of nikon... but if this turns out to be everything they promise, they just took nikons "one up" and blew it right out of the water. but time will tell

That's the silly thing about the whole "Nikon/Canon wars" - there will always be one-upmanship going on... neither will ever "win" because as soon as one ups the stakes, the other will up them some more.

Frankly, the users of BOTH should be loving it, because it's both companies' main incentive for continuing to push the boundaries.

So you can record a vid and take screens from the video to use as an image or would you need to actually press a button to snap it while recording?

Should be possible, but the highest recording for HD is 1080 (not sure whether this was shot in 720 or 1080) but either way video resolution is nowhere near the 20MP or so resolution for stills.

I think you can take "stills" while recording by pressing a button.

Yep. Read the dpreview.com review on it. You can record HD video and still press the shutter for a photo. It's just that the shutter doesn't slap.

Those video shots look great, but I'm wondering what the drawbacks will be. I mean, right now it seems like the Mark II is a better HD video camera than Canon's "Pro" HD cameras which run anywhere from $4K to $9K US. And they only shoot 1440 x 1080, not 1920 x 1080 like the Mark II does.

Is Canon now producing an all-in-one camera than can out-perform their most expensive professional HD cameras at a fraction of the cost, and take exceptionally good stills as well?

^ Except that it's limited to 14mins of HD video.
