^^ yeah, and it's "back ordered until SPRINT 2009"! lol

Senna4ever 12-12-2008 04:08 PM

I have the 5D mkII + 24-70 f2.8 for the weekend, if anyone wants to play with it. Sunday would be the best day. Tomorrow (Saturday) is possible, but I do not have a car as the better half is taking it.

More thoughts:

- canon's new Quick Control Screen (I just discovered this!) makes the camera a hell of a lot more user friendly, it's almost identical in user friendliness as the Sony system. You don't need to dig into the menus to change the most commonly used camera parameters anymore. This was my major beef with Nikon & canon DSLR's. Nikon still does not have this. My opinion regarding canon ergonomics has gone up now. I think all DSLR's need this feature.

- The 5D mkII seems to have a very wide dynamic range.

- Nikon & Canon make the worst vertical grips in the industry.

- The view through the viewfinder is nice and big as can be expected form a FF camera.

- the 3" screen finally has the same resolution of the newer screens on the back of the newer Sony & Nikon DSLR's. It's probably the same Sony made screen on all of them.

- battery life is amazing....the battery is also expensive! It's twice the price of the old 5D battery, but you will get almost triple the shots.

i agree on the grips.. my BG-E2 feels so flimsy

It's not really the flimsy feel of the grips..it's actually quite solid. It's the bulkiness of it. It's not designed to be held comfortably. For example, when you hold the camera in the usual landscape mode, it's comfortable because of the way the camera has a molded grip. The vertical grip has nothing. If you hold the Sony grip for the a700, the vertical grip is also molded so that holding the camera by the vertical grip feels exactly the same as holding it in the landscape mode...and the buttons are also in the exact same place! It's amazing this has never bee done before.

You have my jealousy :)

Yeah the grip on my 20D is just a big block. It's quite uncomfortable to hold in portrait mode. When i say flimsy, i'm talking about the way it attaches to the body. It feels like the my grip could just be ripped off. It's very wobbly and doesn't mate up to the body very well. It doesn't feel like it's a part of the camera.

Kinda like my 40D's "User Menu"? Limited in number of items, but very handy!

I have no problem with the BG-E2 on my 40D. In fact, I got it with the 40D because I loved having the BG-E1 on my 300D. I like that the thumbwheel on the 40D is positioned to be accessed the same from either grip position.

40D has a 3" as well... what's the resolution tho?

Most 3" screens have ~233,000dpi, this has ~922,000dpi

Senna4ever 12-13-2008 03:04 PM

Not dpi. Just dots.

what would you need it for that your XTi can't do?
spending nearly 3 grand on a camera ...

ColinK 12-14-2008 10:08 AM

^ ?

Lots of things. Full frame, can handle high iso MUCH better, (I basically can't shoot any higher than iso400 on my xti) faster fps, shoots HD video, more mp, larger viewfinder, liveview, etc etc etc

well yea. but... would he really need it?

ColinK 12-14-2008 10:30 AM

ahh, yes. Well, that's a whole other argument all together! :P

If he is relatively new to photography, I wouldn't bother. Until you find your camera limiting you, I dont think it's worth it. I've had my xti for 2.5 or so years now? and I still think I'll grab a 70-2002.8L IS before I grab that 5Dmkii

Soundy 12-14-2008 10:31 AM

It's got nothing to do with NEED. If it was just about NEED, we'd all be shooting with one of these (yes, I do have one, and it's awesome!):

It's all about WANT, and the TOYS! :IDL

Ah, the old bait & switch. That's impossibly low, because they would be selling for less than cost! Those prices would be believable if they were before the price increases. I bet they won't have any in stock. Won't hurt to try though, because it is a good deal.

See if could find any reviews about them online first before purchasing!

Dammit, where can I upload 1080p video to? There are some shortcomings to the video system. The AF is VERY loud, and if you focus manually, you can hear the focusing ring turning.

My processor (AMD Turion 64) can't handle 1080p smoothly. Boo~!

Though it may very well be your processor, your graphics card will also play a large roll in continuous playback.

Tim Budong 12-14-2008 02:03 PM

i would buy just becuz of the price, yea..it be a waste..go ahead and tell me..but the fact is, the xti is horrible at anything iso400 and up. I do like night/low light photography..so yea..they dont ahve stock tho, i made teh call.

I took some video at 3200 ISO tonight. This thing is amazing. This may very well be the first canon SLR I can actually live with. The buttons & dials arrangement still feels awkward though.

Because you're not use to a Canon configuration.
