Nagoya is known for unagi, and there is one unagi restaurant that's been there since the 1600's and it's amazing. The freezer unagi sold here is shit compared to the killed when the order comes in unagi you get in Japan.

Good downtown location too in Coal Barbour since parking is WAAAAAY easier to find vs it being on Denman or Robson area. I love how anytime I go there's tons of parking out front.

Horaiken is a much better deal for Nagoya-style Unagi IMHO.

But unless I was a millionaire, I probably would never eat here again. Way too baller for me. | yeah i was there and the chef "invented" the california roll.
i was there with my client, we just sat down and just told htem 100 bucks a head. bam, we had like a 8 course meal. never did we pickedup wasabi or the soya sauce. the best was by far the black cod steam soup. hard to explain but it was pretty darn good. of all the 8 courses, portions were small. It's more like you get 1 piece of sushi roll on a plate with 4 diff type of fish. all in all, the food is amazing because you would never ever be able to order the same thing from another restaurant. (except if u're ordering from teh menu).
we were all really full at the end. it was also 550 for the bill for 4 people.

Forget Kibune. They've gone downhill big time. Octopus' Garden is very good, but pricey. Yuji's is good, probably not as good now that I don't work there anymore. Haha..

sushi place called FRESH. (909 EXPO blvd Vancouver)
recently opened a month or so ago just minutes from BC place / GM place
not as pricey as typical yaletown japanese but very clean and indeed "fresh" and tastefully creative. The owner's real nice and gave my table free miso and some small roles. and their unagi was the best i've ever had yet.

For some reason I didn't go for like a year, went back recently and it was pretty brutal. Not sure if it was just a really off night or what but it left a bad taste with me and I'm never going back.
Octopus Garden i haven't been to but heard many good things about. However, make sure you make a reservation or good luck.
