This place is really famous, the chef is suppose to be some famous dude that hangs out with other famous chefs. I went here once with my boss so I didn't had to pay. It was super expensive, but it's fucking good though.

But unless I was a millionaire, I probably would never eat here again. Way too baller for me.

Hi Genki has unagidon? I never saw it on their menu before, have to go try it out sometime. Although I just went to Tokyo and had unagi there, don't know if I can stand the sticky and overly sweetened unagi sauce in Vancouver anymore.

which place in tokyo did you go to? i tried izuei honten in ueno (as featured on ronin and rouenthals blog) and found it very good. however, i was able to eat hitsumabushi in nagoya and find that superior to kanto style unagi due to its crispiness and bold flavor. also, i never knew hi genki had unagi-don but it could be one of the daily specials they always feature. i noticed vancouver unagi is very much like the unagi you would find at sukiya or yoshinoya.

Nagoya is known for unagi, and there is one unagi restaurant that's been there since the 1600's and it's amazing. The freezer unagi sold here is shit compared to the killed when the order comes in unagi you get in Japan.

Not too bad, it's a newer place only been around for about 8 months or so. Good downtown location too in Coal Barbour since parking is WAAAAAY easier to find vs it being on Denman or Robson area. I love how anytime I go there's tons of parking out front.

That would be Kawabun. It's not just an Unagi specialist, but one of the top Ryotei in the country. Cheapest dinner is probably about $250.

Horaiken is a much better deal for Nagoya-style Unagi IMHO.

yeah i was there and the chef "invented" the california roll.

i was there with my client, we just sat down and just told htem 100 bucks a head. bam, we had like a 8 course meal. never did we pickedup wasabi or the soya sauce. the best was by far the black cod steam soup. hard to explain but it was pretty darn good. of all the 8 courses, portions were small. It's more like you get 1 piece of sushi roll on a plate with 4 diff type of fish. all in all, the food is amazing because you would never ever be able to order the same thing from another restaurant. (except if u're ordering from teh menu).

we were all really full at the end. it was also 550 for the bill for 4 people.

Forget Kibune. They've gone downhill big time. Octopus' Garden is very good, but pricey. Yuji's is good, probably not as good now that I don't work there anymore. Haha..

sushi place called FRESH. (909 EXPO blvd Vancouver)

recently opened a month or so ago just minutes from BC place / GM place
not as pricey as typical yaletown japanese but very clean and indeed "fresh" and tastefully creative. The owner's real nice and gave my table free miso and some small roles. and their unagi was the best i've ever had yet.

The OP wanted a good place to eat. Seriously, people who mention "AYCE" should get banned.

I used to go to Yuji's like 2 years ago and it was really good. For some reason I didn't go for like a year, went back recently and it was pretty brutal. Not sure if it was just a really off night or what but it left a bad taste with me and I'm never going back.

Octopus Garden i haven't been to but heard many good things about. However, make sure you make a reservation or good luck.
