I'm talking about straight from the meat market at the front of the store. Soooooo soft and juicy! Fries were nothing to brag home about but still good. The fact that the whole cooked food section resembled a old 70's diner (spinning stationary stools, mustard yellow sparkly counter etc) was just gravy on top!

Anthony Bourdain ate there and filmed it when he was in town doing an episode on Vancouver. He said the burger was really good because of how fresh everything was.

^One of the cooks I work with say that Save-On Meats is the place to get great fresh meat of any cut you want. If you think about it, it's probably true, since that place has been there for at LEAST 15 years and is still surviving (despite it's unfortunate location).

flameboy54 12-27-2008 08:17 AM

^ Agreed. Definately more then 15 years since I remember it from when I was 6-7 when my grandma would take me to Woodwards to shop and see the xmas displays on the toy floor.

Unfortunately, it's one of the last independent butcher shops around town. I read the cover story in the Vancouver Courier a few months ago, saying that they're loosing out to the big box supermarkets even though your local butcher would have fresher cuts of meats. I guess it's the convenience of it all. Windsor Meats at Main/King Ed next to the Grind just closed its doors not too long ago. Apparently it's been there for 30+ years?

One more to add to the list: King's Head Pub in Kits. They have a pretty big list of burger, about a dozen plus or minus. Tried the bacon cheese and it was pretty good.

Burger Heaven is great.
Fat Burger is pretty good too.
Rode Drive-In was awesome 15 years ago. It really went downhill. Oldskool Rambo Burger FTW.

Is Save-On meats really in the DTES? It is past Main and I think it just hits the West side if I'm not mistaken..

Unless I'm thinking of something completely different.

Yeah, it's on the north side of Hastings and west of Main a couple of blocks. I used to walk by there a bit when I was a kid when my parents would go shopping in Chinatown and Army & Navy.

For best burgers, I like the following:

Red Robins - California Chicken Burger
Two Parrot's - Beef Burger (can't remember which one i had)
Earl's - They used to have a veggie burger years back that I liked, but I don't think they have it anymore
Still haven't had a good salmon burger yet except for the one my dad makes.

Being a burger buff myself, other places that I've enjoyed a burger...

- Vera's (Daily special's FTW!)
- Cedar Cottage Neighborhood pub's Cottage burger (~$10)
- The Whip's Sirloin burger (~$14, lots of fries!)

This guy knows what he's talking about. Cedar Cottage makes a pretty damn good burger and for 10 bucks which includes a side, it's a steal. I haven't been to Save on Meats, but if you think it's even better than Cedar Cottage, then I think it's worth getting jabbed by a used syringe to head down there.

When I used to work at the Keg, I used to order the regular Keg burger for lunch and add on an extra patty for just 2 or 3 bucks more. After you add the extra patty, one just isn't enough. Keg burger patties are made from prime rib but so unhealthy cause you can't cut out the fat.

Vansterdam 12-28-2008 05:18 AM

im so hitting up save on meats after the vapor lounge tmr

flameboy54 12-28-2008 05:32 PM

^ Good call! Me and a few friends were doing Santacon a couple of weeks back, all baked and buzzed, broke away from the crowd and headed down to SOM for a good burger. You can imagine the look on everyones face when you see 3 guys dressed up as Santa walking in, headed straight to the back and mow down on some good ass burgers! Shitty to hear that they're closing down though. Another local institution bites the dust...:(

Another one to add to my list....Subeez/Wazubees turkey & sun-dried tomato burger. It's not on the menu all the time though, it only be a seasonal burger. Anyhow, if you get a chance, try it. There was one time my friend that it wasn't good but all the times I've had it, it passed with flying colours.

Vansterdam 12-30-2008 07:08 AM

VERAS is now a chain? WTF? When the hell did that happen?

VERAS used to be VERAS BURGER SHACK on Cornwall in kits. Is that one still there? That little joint had the best burgers for sure. I had no idea it had blown up into a chain? I’ve been away from here for too long…..

A buddy of mine has their menu, I live like 10 mins away but have never been there. I should really stop being lazy and go one day
