Hope the kids pull through.
Just bad timing and various factors that can be learned from this.

I thought seniors have to get eye exams once they reached a certain age?

Serious. This is complete BS. Media always plays it like the young people are the problem all the time. Everything is related to street racing or some BS.

But HOW many times do you hear/see/read about SENIORS driving through buildings/hitting people/etc.

I had an old lady almost run through my old shop before because she COULDN'T REACH HER BRAKES!!!! She didn't know her seat could be adjusted!

I think there should be some sort of MANDATORY driving exam required yearly for people over a certain age. Fucking seen old morons hitting people in the rain, running red lights, or they stepped on the wrong pedal! They're a fucking menace on the road, just as bad or worse than punk drivers. Senior drivers are worse than drunk people...they react slow, vision impaired, hearing impaired..... I know not ALL old people suck at driving, but hell enough of them do to justify a mandatory driving test. Or a eye and reflex exam. SOMETHING! Hate driving 40 in 50 zone on a summer day.

FUCK!

Fortunately I was creeping along at 45kph, if I had been going my usual 60+kph I might have mowed him down. Like fuck - he could have died!!

An then again the other day some douche was running down the sidewalk as I was driving down the road, and I'm entering a roundabout intersection where I don't have to stop, and he tries to run across in front of my car, which no way in hell can stop in that short of a distance. So I just carefully swerve around him. Then I can see the look of surprise on his face in the rearview because I didn't stop, when actually, by law, I had right of way.

It goes both ways people.. just cuz you're a pedestrian, it doesn't mean the car is gonna see you and stop for you. BE CAREFUL!

there are alot of idiotic pedestrians running around on the street thinking that they are own the street. not only do they put themselves in danger they also put other drivers in danger too.
also, they should dress appropriately when they are heading out at night. when one is walking at night w/ no lights around, don't walk super slow on the middle of the street wearing black; if not, be aware of their surroundings.

i'm not saying they r to blame, i believe that they need to do their part as well.

wow. so that's what all the sirens and stuff were about. I live a stone's throw away from that intersection.

It is a hazard around that area, and lighting is poor at night. Early mornings are worse, you have parents dropping their kids off at school double parked on streets and blatant dangerous U-turns. It's scary.

Hope the kid in critical condition will survive and recover fully, as well as the other 2 kids.

sigh. I always tell pedestrians : it's YOUR life, don't think people will stop for you.. you make the choice to risk your life, or not.

I am just as pissed off as everyone else in this thread on elderly drivers being able to drive. But on the same note, we have to think about it on they're side as well. Now im not defending these geezers who decide to hit pedestrians cuz of bad reaction time or even the ones that are just plain bad drivers due to old age but we have to take a quick moment to try understand why these ppl are still on the road.
Now imagine if you were at ur 70s and you dont have any siblings or relatives. How are you gonna get around? How are you gonna do your groceries or run your errands? These are probably why some of them still drive, is because they have no one to rely on. Now i know there are senior services that the city offers but what if your just not a rich retired old man? what are you gonna pay them with.... viagra pills? We have to think about this issue when this becomes US. For those who have families to rely on, great! be happy that you have a helping hand but for those who are probably gonna be alone, what now? what if ICBC decides to cut driving at age 60 because majority of RS wants justice. Do you think its fair justice now? Alot of you might disagree and ignore the facts and some might even criticize me for this. Thats fine, i expect that but think about what happens when you hit that age.

Once again for the record, I do not defend these old ppl's status. If they hit someone i am just as ruthless as other members here of taking their driving privileges away. All i am saying is, see it from the other side for we will all one day get there.

Word.

Some pedestrians take their right of way too literally.

I almost hit some dickhead in the Hillside mall parking lot a few weeks ago, he walked straight out of Thrifty's and across my path without even stopping to LOOK first. I wasn't moving fast, but the parking lot was icy and when I slammed on the brakes I slid to a stop inches away from him.

He gave me a dirty look so I gave him shit and told him to use his EYES and COMMON SENSE before starting to cross.

the FUCKED UP thing is,

those 3 kids DID stopped at the cross walk, and a car on the right side stopped and waved before they started crossing, when that elderly driver SPED DOWN THE LEFT SIDE and hit the kids.

obviously a difficult task when:

you are in the 70s,

it was raining,

you are driving really fast to try to catch wheels of fortune.

ppl who are above 65 years old should really get their license retaken again since their relfex has gone down the hill (of course everyone is different, some may still perform well even when they are 75)

anyways, old people shouldnt drive, period. they got their kids and grandkids to drive. old people slows down traffic, take generations to park, and blind you with high beams.

If that's what happened, it can happen to any bad driver, not just the elderly. When you see a car stopped at a crosswalk, slow the f*** down!

On a side rant, to drivers that stop at non-crosswalks for pedestrians, please don't! Nobody knows why you're suddenly stopped and it causes great confusion. Not to mention it puts the pedestrians in danger cos other cars may not stop if they don't see the pedestrians. If the idiots want to jay-walk, they should do it at their own risk and wait for cars to clear.

They'll never have seniors retested. That would be discrimination. Testing should be done on a regular basis, like every 10 years, or even more frequent. There's just so many people that can't drive properly, regardless of age, sex, race. It'd be worth looking into. The costs of implementation could be recovered through reduction in claim payouts. In theory, it should be able to take unqualified drivers off the road or at least identify them to put them through a safety course.

if there is logical explanation to a differnet treatment, it wont be discrimination. I think my Business Law course covered this.

Just like color-blind people can not fly fighter jets.
