in all honesty, shit like this breaks my fucking heart. as modern and civilized we like to think our species are. we still rape, pillage, murder, enslave, exploit and war with each other. in the article it states, "we are forced/taught to look the other way".
as a species, we are already long overdue where none of this should be happening and we should be moving on to more conventional uses of free energy ie. wind/solar etc because our planet wont sustain our usage much longer

It's an extreme situation in Dubai, but the water situation shows what could lay in store for North America if attitudes don't change soon. Being in Vancouver, it's hard to imagine water shortages on an epidemic scale, but look at places like California, Arizona, Las Vegas, etc. Large amounts of people in areas that weren't meant to support much of anything. Vegas is a ridiculous fucking place, it only exists because they spent billions of dollars to divert water there, and now even that is drying up. People move to places like that and still demand golf courses and lawns and swimming pools. What the fuck? You're in a godamn desert!
Where it affects those of us from BC is that we're probably going to end up shipping water down South, but will we be sending too much? We're going to have to stay very vigilant that we don't get left high and dry by people that are more interested in money than the well being of their fellow citizens.

Wow, great read. I suscribe to the Economist which also is not afraid of posting real opinions.
I was offered an engineering job paying the equivalent of $200K US a year a few years back and it sounded too good to be true. Probably was.
My old boss used to work in Dubai and he said it is the most racist place on earth. He is an engineering manager and his counterpart would make half the wage he did just because one had a Canadian passport and the other had an Indian one.
My boss also told me that if you hit a pedestrian in Dubai, the consequences are dependent on the race. If it is an asian, African worker, you pay a fine. If its a expat or emerati, you're going to jail.

Living in a 3rd/2nd world country(Vietnam) it really puts home about the kind of shit you see around here and what people have to put up with. On this one chinese hotel project all of the workers have cement barracks that they sleep in and cannot leave the property. They dont get paid until the job is done which is now over 2 years.

I never really had any intention of going there, even with all the discovery channel documentaries on the engineering marvels. The ecological disaster that could (and likely will) happen there will be one of unprecedented proportions. Really though, it is like a mini-case study of how we are mis-managing our worlds resources (and people). We should be taking this city and learning from its mistakes.

Technology is a scary thing. Now they can bring water where it's not meant to be.
Also, I read that they are farming Pacific Salmon in the southern hemisphere and it's creating so much polution in the area. And soon it's going to spread and taint all the wild salmon.
Sadly that's just what we know of. What about everything else that's still hidden?

My track record is that of an incompetent and an intellectual light weight... I lack any academic merit in all fields of study.. i am characterized as a pretentious savage with an overzealous nature.. i have a tendency to occasionally speak my mind and ridicule people, especially when unprovoked .. this is self evident in all my previous posts, including the most recent one that has earned me this great badge of honor. I think the moral thing to do at this point is to offer a sincere apology.. I am sorry for my immature behavior which was an unfortunate result of my age... I am only 9... Yes you are right.. Its a shame i had to poor so much intellectual pollution into RS.... As an act of contrition, i will now insert a thorned rose stem down my penis hole and attempt to pull it out of my anus...

Crazy. | My dad used to work in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia when I was young. He was an engineer for an oil company there ( cooking oil mind you  ). A lot of the attributes described in that article reminded me of what my dad would describe to me about Saudi Arabia. Yes there was a lot of $$$. He didn't pay any tax. Luxury items were cheaper - probably 50% off for the entry level goods of these brands ( since there was no luxury tax and low import tax on these goods ). His employer would pay for embassy school or subsidize for the international school tuition fees if my sister and I moved there. We also got to fly for free to Jeddah if we chose to.
The social hierarchy in Jeddah was ranked by your religion and citizenship. Don't be surprised if some foreign workers convert to Islam so they get preference with their careers. These Arabs also see themselves equal to europeans and look down on other races. Among muslim communities, The social hierarchy is goes from arabs, lebanese and other middle eastern folks such as egyptians - all the way down to east indians and indonesians. If you go by citizenship, the arabs will be up there placing themselves with the white americans, british, germans, and other western european countries, then you would have your east asians (if ever there were any), down to your southeast asians and south asians - filipinos, east indians, pakistanis..etc.
As far as the male homosexual population in Saudi Arabia, it has the most male gays out of all the middle eastern countries. I guess this is a result of an extremely conservative view of women in their culture. For adult women, a black veil should cover women up women from head to tow - the face and hair could be exposed though. From what I have heard, other muslim countries are much stricter - where they only allow the eyes of the woman to be exposed.
Funny thing though, when you see houses or mansions side by side that look identical, both those households would consist of the 1st wife and 2nd wife of an arab plus the kids. If you see a vehicle with an arab with two adult women and a swarm full of kids, that;s the guy with his two wives and all the kids in a family night out.
As far as the water issue, they irrigate the water from the sea at desalination plants to convert to fresh water. It's good enough for you to shower, brush your teeth - etc. However, it would be ill-advised if you drink it.
For the maids that do work there, yes I feel sorry for them if their "owner"/employer has the attributes of what was described in the article. There are also cases where the maids are treated well - e.g. when their employer is a saudi monarch.
Keep in mind there are around 30000 members of the Royal family. The Saudi princes have a lot of wives and mistresses ( they can afford to build lots of mansions for the wives  ). When I was there (back in 1990), the 3 most important members of the Saudi Royal Family was the King, the Star Prince ( younger brother of the King, and the next younger brother.
FYI, gas was equivalent to under 2 cents a liter. This was in 1991 the last time I was there.
